Bernard Lonergan's "Circulation analysis" and macrodynamics

De Neeve, Eileen O'Brien January 1990 (has links)
Bernard Lonergan's economic writings have not been fully evaluated by economists although two recent papers by Burley (1989a, 1989b) show that work has begun. The purpose of this dissertation, therefore, is to situate Lonergan's (1944) economics essay, Circulation Analysis, in the history of economic thought of the period as well as to present a Lonerganian cycle model. / Circulation Analysis examines fundamental macrodynamic processes to explain fluctuations. It was written in the early 1940s following a period of controversy and debate that led to the current paradigms of economic dynamics. The two sides of the debate are exemplified by Harrod (1936) and Hayek (1933 (1928), 1939), in particular. The controversy ended with World War II and the emerging hegemony of the Anglo-American approach, which separated macrodynamics into growth theory (long-run supply problems), and stabilization theory (short-run demand problems). / This dissertation argues that this dichotomy is unsatisfactory and proposes Lonergan's pure cycle as an alternative paradigm. Lonergan's pure cycle restores the importance of supply-side dynamics in the short-run, without denying the primacy of demand issues in the analysis of deviations. A Lonerganian approach views demand shocks as essentially monetary, but also contends that the distribution of nominal income can cause shocks, if it is not synchronized with changes in real variables. / In this thesis a Lonerganian model is presented that uses a Kydland-Prescott (1982) type of "time-to-build" technology. The model is subjected to permanent productivity shocks to investment, which explain, with a lag, equilibrium output. The monetary and distributional shocks to demand, which are temporary, can then explain the deviation of actual output from its equilibrium value. The model uses a Beveridge and Nelson (1981) approach, which specifies changes in growth rates of variables as a function of permanent and temporary shocks. The shocks are identified because the model is recursive: first, the productivity shock determines investment and equilibrium output; then, the monetary shock determines prices and sales of consumer goods. Simulation results are presented.

Ethics of metaphysics and ethics of value : a study in the thought of Bernard Lonergan

Thompson, Donald F. January 1980 (has links)
Within the thought of Bernard Lonergan, is described a universal dynamic structure immanent within intellectual, moral, and religious consciousness. In Insight: A Study of Human Understanding, his analysis of the invariant pattern of that structure grounds a cognitional theory, an epistemology, and a metaphysics which then enables him to propose an ethic based on the structure of the good as immanent within every act of rational self-consciousness. In later works, principally Method in Theology, his orientation shifts to incorporate a new notion of value, which is distinct in that it is apprehended through feeling. The result is an ethic oriented to the transcendental objective of value and developed from the patterns of cognition which apprehend that value. This thesis studies that shift, and focuses on Lonergan's admitted sources to it: Max Scheler, Dietrich von Hildebrand, Jean Piaget, Susanne Langer, Abraham Maslow, and existential thought generally. In reconstructing it, the thesis finds grounds to differentiate the cognitional theory based upon analysis of intellectual as opposed to affective operations, their invariant norms for authentic operation, and their contents in facts and values respectively.

Lässvårigheter i de tidiga årskurserna : En litteraturstudie kring läsinlärningsproblematik och framgångsrik undervisning i årskurs F-3 / Reading difficulties in the early grades : A literature review of reading difficulties and successful teaching in primary school

Jarl, Ida, Gewerths, Jenny January 2015 (has links)

Shuttle, a press guide to the John F. Kennedy Space Center / Press guide to the John F. Kennedy Space Center.

Sanders, Douglas K. January 1985 (has links)
"Shuttle" presents a text' with maps and color photographs, suitable for publication, to inform members of the news media uninformed with space shuttle flights. Because of the voluminous press materials for shuttle missions submitted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, this creative project attempted to compile information as to the most relevant topics of space shuttle flights obtained from official NASA publications, interviews, transcripts and from veteran space center reporters. Since the author has photographed and covered six Orbiter missions for newspapers and radio, personal observations in this creative project explain a "behind-the-scenes” of varying practical experience at the John F. Kennedy Space Center.NASA has four space shuttles--Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis. From that combined "space pool" at least 400 manned missions are planned, some more ambitious than others. But each of the four Orbiters will require relevant information on the part of media representatives at Kennedy, especially those at the space center for the very first time. "Shuttle" is intended to help meet those news responsibilities.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's creation of character : a study of the artistic transformation of biographical experience into fiction

Dambrauskas, Cynthia Knaack January 1970 (has links)
This thesis has explored the relationship, in terms of parallels and allusions, of the four complete and one unfinished novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald to his own life experiences. The novels used in this study area This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gat 9 Tender Is the Night, and The Last Tycoon, of which only five and one-half chapters were completed at the time of Fitzgerald's death in December, 1940. This study traced the personal exploitation and the transformation of Fitzgerald's own life experiences, relatives, and acquaintances into his fictional subject matter, characters, and settings. In addition, the thesis has discussed Fitzgerald's friendship with several of his contemporary critics and authors such as: Maxwell Perkins, his publisher; Edmund "Bunny" Wilson, and John Peale Bishop, his Princeton classmates and literary colleagues; and Ernest Hemingway, whom Fitzgerald admired greatly. The influence that these and others had on Fitzgerald's works was also revealed in this study.

Motoneuronų perdavimo funkciją įtakojantys veiksniai / Factors affecting f-i relation in motoneurons

Guzulaitis, Robertas 23 June 2014 (has links)
Motoneuronas sinapsines sroves transformuoja į veikimo potencialų (VP) seką. Šią transformaciją apibūdina motoneurono perdavimo funkcija, kurią galima tirti eksperimentiškai, kaip VP dažnio priklausomybę nuo įleidžiamos srovės dydžio (f-I santykis). Veikimo potencialo ir jo sekų generavimą stipriai įtakoja srovės, kurias generuoja įtampos valdomi jonų kanalai. Viena tokių srovių yra pastovi natrio jonų srovė (INaP). Tyrimai atlikti su vėžlių (Chrysemys scripta elegans) nugaros smegenų motoneuronais. Nustatyme, kad INaP motoneuronuose sukelia reobazės poslinkį į mažesnių srovių pusę. Taip pat INaP sumažina perdavimo funkcijos (f-I) statumą. Nustatyta, kad kasymosi reflekso metu (veikiant neuroniniam tinklui) motoneuronų laidumas ženkliai padidėja. Motoneurono laidumo padidėjimą galima sukelti į ekstraląstelinę terpę pridėjus muscimolio- GABAA receptorių agonisto. Nustatėme, kad ląstelės laidumo padidėjimas reobazę paslenka į didesnių srovių pusę. Motoneurono laidumo padidėjimas taip pat sukelia perdavimo funkcijos (f-I) statumo sumažėjimą. / Motoneurons transform synaptic inputs in to sequences of action potentials (AP). This transformation can be investigated as dependence of spike frequency on injected current (f-I relation). Generation of AP and firing-pattern are strongly influenced by a number of voltage dependant ion conductance. The role of persistent sodium current (INaP) on f-I relation was investigated. The investigation was performed on motoneurons from adult turtle (Chrysemys scripta elegans) spinal cord. We found that INaP decreased the reobase and decreased the steepness of f-I relation. It was found, that during scratching (when neurons network are active) the conductance of motoneurons was strongly increased. We investigated how high conductance affects reobase and f-I relation. The conductance of motoneurons was increased by bath applied muscimol– an agonist of GABAA receptors. We found that increased motoneuron conductance increased reobase and decreased the steepness of f-I relation.
