Gone But Not Forgetting: Examining the Differentiation of Flourishing and Floundering in Emerging Adulthood in the Context of Family Development

In emerging adulthood, distinctive groups have been found to exhibit "flourishing" (i.e., simultaneously experiencing positive, maturing relationships with parents, exploring identity in numerous positive areas, and striving to attain and subsequently achieving criteria deemed important for the successful transition to adulthood) and "floundering" (i.e., experiencing pitfalls such as heavy experimentation in the form of high levels of binge drinking and drug use, and instability reflected in high levels of depression and anxiety; Nelson & Padilla-Walker, 2011). While these groups have been found to differ with regards to factors of individual development, they had not been examined for variation with regards to familial development. Therefore, the purpose of this study was twofold: First, to examine how experiences in emerging adults' family of origin may be linked to their flourishing and floundering in emerging adulthood. Second, to explore how emerging adults' attitudes towards family of formation, specifically aspects of individuals' marital horizons and family formation values (Carroll et al., 2007), may be linked to flourishing and floundering in emerging adulthood. In general, results showed that flourishing and floundering subgroups differed with regards to their perceptions towards family of origin and attitudes towards family of formation. Flourishing subgroups were found to have more positive perceptions of family-of-origin factors than the floundering subgroups, as well as lower ideal ages for marriage, stronger feelings towards marital permanence, more family centeredness, and less endorsement of cohabitation.

Therefore, we tried to follow the process of family representantive group formation and accomplished to make a systematic description of the process. The representativiness it is a specific form of participation, which the main challenges are being discussed in the context of educational publics polices at a national dimension. This study is anchored in a phenomenological thought and Paulo Freire´s. The participants in this research were the scholars family and the residents of the local community. The procedure used was the Reflective Interview. The data analysis consisted by constructing constellations that revealed the comprehension of participant families. The results indicated that the representation was understood as an action that can only happen if there's a group commitment. Such action is only possible when followed by an interested school team, which is open and available to dialogue with the families. An action established with focus on the collective interest and it is characterized by allowing the approximation of the families to the school context, the realization of practical actions, teaching and learning moments, sharing experiences and the reception of participants in their personal issues. It also appears as an opportunity to turn into reality the wishes of many voices by transforming them in a single voice. Thus, representing a family in the school context was understood as something that is whole, which includes all possibilities and challenges. In addition, the process of mobilization, construction and formation of representativeness spaces required the school team involvement and a dialogical attitude. This attitude revealed a possible way to overcome the authoritarian posture that does not allow the family representativiness in school. This study has given elements to conceive the formation of representative in the school and it has revealed that the partnership with the University as an interesting possibility of a shared process of formation and to accompany the family representatives / A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar o modo como familiares de educandos de uma EMEF compreenderam o fenômeno da representatividade de famílias no contexto escolar. Assim, de forma específica, buscou-se acompanhar o processo de formação do grupo de representantes de famílias e realizar uma descrição sistematizada deste processo. A representatividade trata-se de uma forma específica de participação, cujos principais desafios estão sendo discutidos no âmbito das políticas públicas educacionais em nível nacional. O estudo está ancorado no pensamento fenomenológico e de Paulo Freire. Foram participantes desta pesquisa familiares de educandos da EMEF estudada e moradores da região do entorno. Como procedimento de apreensão do fenômeno, foi utilizada a Entrevista Reflexiva. A análise dos dados por meio da construção de constelações desvelou a compreensão das famílias participantes. Os resultados indicaram que a representatividade foi compreendida como uma ação que só pode ser realizada de forma coletiva e por pessoas que se mostrem compromissadas com o outro. Tal ação só se torna possível quando acompanhada de forma interessada por uma equipe escolar, que se mostra aberta e disponível ao diálogo com as famílias. Uma ação que se estabelece focada no interesse do coletivo que representa e se caracteriza por oportunizar a aproximação das famílias ao contexto escolar, a realização de ações práticas, momentos de ensino e aprendizagem, compartilhamentos de experiências e acolhimento dos participantes em suas questões pessoais. Apresenta-se, ainda, como oportunidade de transformar em realidade os anseios de muitas vozes ao transformá-las em uma única voz. Assim, representar as famílias perante a escola foi compreendido como algo que é Tudo, e tudo inclui possibilidades e desafios. Discussões posteriores chamam atenção para o envolvimento da equipe escolar no processo de mobilização, construção e formação de espaços de representatividade a partir de uma perspectiva dialógica, visto que esta atitude se revela como caminho possível de superação da postura autoritária que inviabiliza a presença representativa da família na escola. O estudo aponta subsídios para a formação de representantes na escola e sugere a parceria com a Universidade como uma possibilidade interessante no processo compartilhado de formação e acompanhamento das famílias representantes

Daktaro disertacija siekia atsakyti į klausimą – kokie sunkumai kyla formuojant šeimos politiką Lietuvoje? Darbo tikslas - teoriškai ir empiriškai įvertinti formuojamos šeimos politikos adekvatumą šeimos pokyčiams Lietuvoje, atskleidžiant šeimos politikos formavimo problemas ir jų sprendimo būdus. Lietuvos šeimos politikos turinys analizuojamas šeimos statuso ir šeimos ir valstybės santykių apibrėžimo Lietuvos Konstitucijoje, konceptualių šeimos politikos pagrindų, apibrėžiančių šeimos politikos objektą, tikslus ir veiksmų kryptis ir ES prioritetinių veiklos krypčių integravimo nacionalinėje šeimos politikoje kontekste, taip pat analizuojama šeimos politikos priemonių sistema, sudaranti galimybes tėvams derinti darbą ir šeimos gyvenimą, lyginant ją su kitų Europos šalių priemonių sistemomis. Disertacijoje taip pat pristatomi kiekybinio tyrimo "Požiūris į šeimą", atskleidžiantys sociokultūrinį šeimos politikos formavimo kontekstą bei ekspertų požiūris į šeimos politikos formavimo problemas ir šeimos politikos formavimo galimybes. Finally the dissertation presents the model of a systematic approach towards family policy formation.

This doctoral thesis investigates the question: what are the challenges of family policy formation in Lithuania? The aim of the research is the theoretical and empirical evaluation of the compliance of family policy with family changes in Lithuania by identifying the problems of family policy formation and ways for their resolution. The content of family policy in Lithuania is analysed in the context of the state-family relationship in the Lithuanian Constitution, conceptual family policy principles defining the object of family policy, objectives and operational trends and integration of the EU operational trends in the national family policy, as well as the system of family policy measures developing possibilities to reconcile work and family life in comparison with system of measures of other European states. The dissertation also presents the analysis of the outcomes of the quantitative research „Attitude to family“ by revealing the socio-cultural context of family policy formation, as well as the outcomes of the experts’ attitude toward the problems of family policy formation and the possibilities for the development of family policy.
