Non-Destructive Evaluation of the Condition of Subsurface Drainage in Pavement Using Ground Penetrating RADAR (GPR)Hao Bai (5929478) 14 December 2020 (has links)
<div>Pavement drainage systems are one of the key drivers of pavement function and longevity, and effective drain maintenance can significantly extend a pavement's service life. Maintenance of these drains, however, is often hampered by the challenge of locating the drains. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) typically offers a rapid and effective method to detect these underground targets. However, typical detection schema that rely upon the observation of the hyperbolic return from a GPR scan of a buried conduit still tend to miss many of the older drains beneath pavements as they may be partially or fully filled with sediment and/or may be fabricated from clay or other earthen materials, yielding a return signal that is convolved with significant background noise. </div><div><br></div><div>To manage this challenge, this work puts forward an improved background noise and clutter reduction method to enhance the target signals in what amounts to a constructed environment that tends to have more consistent subsurface properties than one might encounter in a general setting. Within this technique, two major algorithms are employed. Algorithm 1 is the core of this method, and plays the role of reducing background noise and clutter. Algorithm 2 is supplementary, and helps eliminate anomalous discontinuous returns generated by the equipment itself, which could otherwise lead to false detection indications in the output of Algorithm 1. Instead of traditional 2-D GPR images, the result of the proposed algorithms is a 1-D plot along the survey line, highlighting a set of “points of interest” that could indicate buried drain locations identified at any given GPR operating frequency. Subsurface exploration using two different operating frequencies, 900 MHz and 400 MHz herein, is then employed to further enhance detection confidence. Points of interest are ultimately coded to define the confidence of the detection. Comparing the final result of proposed algorithms with the original GPR images, the improved algorithm is demonstrated to provide significantly improved detection results, and could potentially be applied to similar problems in other contexts.</div><div><br></div><div>Besides the background reduction methods, a group of simulations performed using GPRMAX2D software are examined to explore the influence of road cross-section designs on sub-pavement drainage conduit GPR signatures, and evaluate the effectiveness of alternate GPR antennae configurations in locating these buried conduits in different ground conditions. Two different models were explored to simulate conduit detection. In addition, different pipe and soil conditions were modeled, such as pipe size, pipe material, soil moisture level, and soil type. Four different quantitative measurements are used to analyze GPR performance based on different key factors. The four measurements are 1) signal to background ratio (SBR) in dB; 2) signal to receiver noise ratio (SNR) in dB; 3) signal energy in Volts; and 4) average signal band power in Watts.</div><div><br></div><div>The water and clay content of subsurface soil can significantly influence the detection results obtained from ground penetrating radar (GPR). Due to the variation of the material properties underground, the center frequency of transmitted GPR signals shifts to a lower range as wave attenuation increases. Examination of wave propagation in the subsurface employing an attenuation filter based on a linear system model shows that received GPR signals will be shifted to lower frequencies than those originally transmitted. The amount of the shift is controlled by a wave attenuation factor, which is determined by the dielectric constant, electric conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility of the transmitted medium. This work introduces a receiver-transmitter-receiver dual-frequency configuration for GPR that employs two operational frequencies for a given test - one higher and one slightly lower - to take advantage of this phenomenon to improve subpavement drain detection results. In this configuration, the original signal is transmitted from the higher frequency transmitter. After traveling through underground materials, the signal is received by two receivers with different frequencies. One of the receivers has the same higher center frequency as the transmitter, and the other receiver has a lower center frequency. This configuration can be expressed as Rx(low-frequency)-Tx(high-frequency)-Rx(high-frequency) and was applied in both laboratory experiments and field tests. Results are analyzed in the frequency domain to evaluate and compare the properties of the signal obtained by both receivers. The laboratory experiment used the configuration of Rx(400MHz)-Tx(900MHz)-Rx(900MHz). The field tests, in addition to the configuration used in the lab tests, employed another configuration of Rx(270MHz)-Tx(400MHz)-Rx(400MHz) to obtain more information about this phenomenon. Both lab and field test results illustrate the frequency-shift phenomenon described by theoretical calculations. Based on the power spectrum for each signal, the lower frequency antenna typically received more energy (higher density values) at its peak frequency than the higher frequency antenna.</div>

Le parasitisme est omniprésent dans l’environnement et une attention croissante est récemment apportée sur son impact sur les communautés écologiques. En effet, les parasites peuvent affecter la valeur adaptative des animaux sauvages, en altérant leur physiologie et/ou leur comportement. Ainsi, le rôle des parasites dans le maintien ou l’érosion des différences persistantes comportementales et cognitives entre individus est le sujet de nombreux débats et recherches. La relation entre l’infection parasitaire et le comportement de l’hôte est souvent complexe. Le comportement des individus agit sur leur susceptibilité au parasitisme, mais l’infection parasitaire peut aussi modifier le comportement de l’hôte, favorisant parfois la transmission du parasite. En outre, l’inclusion d’un proxy de santé, tel que la condition corporelle est importante à considérer dans des populations naturellement infectées où la santé des individus peut varier. Dans cette étude, nous avons examiné la relation entre un gradient de densité parasitaire, la personnalité (exploration et témérité), la cognition (apprentissage par stimuli aversifs) et la condition corporelle (Indice K de Fulton) chez les crapets-soleil (Lepomis gibbosus) sauvages, naturellement infectés par des endoparasites, comme le trématode responsable de la maladie du point noir (Trematoda : Apophallus sp. et Uvulifer sp.) et le ver solitaire de l’achigan (Cestoda : Proteocephallus ambloplites). Nous avons trouvé que l’exploration, mais pas la témérité, était répétable ce qui suggère que ce trait reflète la personnalité. De plus, l’exploration a diminué avec l’augmentation de la densité de parasites et la diminution de la condition corporelle de l’hôte. Ainsi, étant donné que la relation entre le comportement explorateur et la densité de parasites variait avec la condition corporelle, il est possible que les parasites aient un effet indirect sur le comportement de l’hôte en impactant sa physiologie. L’exploration variait également selon la densité de points noirs et la densité de cestodes, suggérant un potentiel conflit entre ces deux parasites, leurs hôtes finaux étant différents. Les individus avec plus de cestodes ont moins bien exécuté la tâche d’apprentissage, ce qui laisse à penser que ces parasites imposeraient un coût énergétique qui réduit les performances cognitives de l’hôte. Nos résultats contribuent à démontrer que les parasites et la condition corporelle de l’hôte doivent être pris en considération dans les études écologiques, comportementales ou physiologiques afin de mieux comprendre le maintien des variations inter-individuelles au sein des populations sauvages. / Parasites are ubiquitous in nature and increasing attention is given to their impact on ecological communities. Indeed, parasites can affect host fitness through changes in physiology and/or behaviour. Thus, their role in maintaining or eroding persistent inter-individual differences in behaviour (i.e. personality) and cognitive abilities in hosts is the subject of increasing study and debate. The relationship between parasite infection and host behaviour can sometimes be complex. For instance, personality traits may affect an individuals’ susceptibility to parasites. Conversely, parasite infection can itself modify host behaviour, sometimes favouring the parasite’s own transmission. In addition, including a general fitness proxy, such as body condition, is important when studying naturally infected populations, where individual health can vary greatly among individuals. Here, we examine the relationships among host body condition (Fulton’s K index), personality (i.e. exploration, boldness), cognition (aversive learning) and parasite density in wild pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus), naturally infected with endoparasites, including trematodes causing blackspot disease (Trematoda: Apophallus sp. and Uvulifer sp.) and bass tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephallus ambloplites). We found that exploration but not boldness was repeatable, which suggests that this trait reflects personality. Host exploration decreased with both increasing parasite density and decreasing host body condition. Because the relationship between exploration and parasite density varied with body condition, this suggests a possible indirect effect of parasites on host behaviour through effects on host physiology. Exploration varied depending on blackspot and bass tapeworm density suggesting a possible conflict between these two parasites, as their final hosts are different. Inhibitory avoidance learning decreased with increasing cestode density, suggesting that these parasites could impose an energetic cost which decreases host cognitive performances. Our results provide more evidence that including host body condition and parasite density in ecological, behavioural or physiological studies can help better understand the persistence of inter-individual differences in wild populations.

Essas relações constitutivas, denominadas curva característica e função de condutividade hidráulica, são descritas através de modelos empíricos que geralmente possuem vários parâmetros que devem ser calibrados com relação a dados coletados. Muitos dos parâmetros nos modelos constitutivos não podem ser medidos diretamente em campo ou laboratório, mas somente podem ser inferidos de forma significativa a partir de dados coletados e da modelagem inversa. Para obter os parâmetros do solo com a análise inversa, um algoritmo de otimização de busca local ou global pode ser aplicado. As otimizações globais são mais capazes de encontrar parâmetros ótimos, no entanto,
a solução direta, por meio da modelagem numérica é computacionalmente custosa. Portanto, soluções analíticas (modelo substituto) podem superar essa falha acelerando o processo de otimização. Nesta dissertação, apresentamos a Regressão Polinomial Evolucionária (EPR) como uma ferramenta

As simulações do modelo se mostram concordantes com as simulações do programa Hydrus. / [en] Water flow analyses under transient soil hydraulic conditions require knowledge of the soil hydraulic properties. These constitutive relationships, named soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) and hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) are described through empirical models which generally have several parameters that must be calibrated against collected data. Many of the parameters in SWCC and HCF models cannot be directly measured in field or laboratory but can only be meaningfully inferred
from collected data and inverse modeling. In order to obtain the soil parameters with the inverse process, a local or global optimization algorithm may be applied. Global optimizations are more capable of fiding optimum parameters, however the direct solution through numerical modeling are time consuming. Therefore, analytical solutions (surrogate models) may overcome this shortcomming by accelerating the optimization process. In this work we introduce Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR) as a
tool to develop surrogate models of the physically-based unsaturated flow. A rich dataset of soil hydraulic parameters is used to calibrate our surrogate model, and real-world data are then utilized to validate our methodology. Our results demonstrate that the EPR model predicts accurately the observed pressure head data. The model simulations are shown to be in good agreement with the Hydrus software package.

[pt] A cidade do Rio de Janeiro apresenta relevo acidentado e clima tropical. Os processos intempéricos que ocorrem na litologia geram os solos residuais e coluvionares. Tendo em vista a limitação espacial de áreas planas, a ocupação antrópica se direciona as áreas de encosta, onde estes solos estão presentes. Ao longo dos anos tem-se estudado que a maioria dos movimentos de massa da cidade do Rio de Janeiro estão relacionados à perda de sucção mátrica do solo. O presente trabalho visa, portanto, a obtenção de parâmetros hidráulicos dos solos não-saturados de maneira simples, rápida e pouco onerosa a fim de viabilizar estudos da infiltração de água em taludes. Para isso, foram estudadas 6 áreas ao longo do Rio de Janeiro, onde a escolha se baseou.na rocha de origem formadora dos solos residuais. Os ensaios do trabalho utilizados foram o Ensaio de Infiltração Monitorada (EIM) e caracterização física, e para efeitos comparativos também foram executados alguns ensaios de Guelph, papel filtro e permeabilidade saturada triaxial. O modelo de interpretação não-saturado usado foi o modelo de van Genutchen-Maulem, e a obtenção de três dos cinco parâmetros foi feita através de uma análise inversa. A curva a ser retroanalisada no ensaio é a série temporal da sucção mátrica. / [en] Rio de Janeiro city is sited on a rugged relief and has a tropical climate. The meteoric processes that take place on its lithology generate the residual and transported soils. Accounting for its limited flat urban space, its habitants tend to live in steep slope areas where such soils are present. For a long time studies have taken place to characterize mass movements and their conclusions relate most of them to the loss of soils matric suction. Therefore the study aims to obtain the unsaturated soil parameters in a simple, rapid and low cost way, which may help future studies of water infiltration on slopes. And thus, 6 locations in Rio de Janeiro were choosen based on the criteria of soil formation, attending different types of gneissic bedrocks. The constitutive model used was the van Genuchten and the method to obtain three of its five parameters was by solving an inverse problem. The curve to be optimized comes from the monitored infiltration test which consists on the record of the matric suction over a constant head infiltration test.

Master’s thesis is focused on making the acquaintance of EMC issues and ways of electromagnetic field scanner RS321 utilization for pre-compliance measurements. First part contains analysis of available equipment’s influence on measurement results on the basis of gathered specification. Next part includes an example measurement used as operational manual for scanner and its controlling program. The most important part is correction evaluation for performed EMI measurement of signal generator using its EMC certification protocol and application of gained correction curve on independent EMI measurement of device tested by EMC testing laboratory. Other possibilities of scanner utilization are mentioned in the next chapters. Last part of the thesis contains suitability evaluation of EMC scanner on the basis of findings from performed measurements.

Le parasitisme est de plus en plus considéré comme un facteur écologique pouvant créer des variations dans le comportement des individus. Toutefois, la direction de causalité entre le comportement et le parasitisme reste incertaine. Les infections expérimentales sont le plus souvent réalisées en laboratoire, limitant les inférences écologiques. À l’aide d’une infection expérimentale semi-naturelle, nous avons infecté avec succès des crapets-soleils (Lepomis gibbosus) dans un lac où ils ont été exposés à une variété de vers parasites (trématodes, cestodes), permettant d’examiner les effets de la co-infection naturelle chez les hôtes. Nous avons mesuré la témérité, l’exploration et l’activité avant et après l’infection expérimentale. En utilisant une approche bayésienne, nous avons trouvé que les traits de comportement initiaux exercent une forte influence sur la susceptibilité à l’infection : les poissons les plus téméraires et/ou les moins actifs au départ ont acquis une plus grande densité de points noirs (c.-à-d. points noirs visibles sous la peau, les nageoires et dans les muscles du poisson) et de cestodes lors de l’infection. Par ailleurs, nous avons montré que la condition corporelle est réduite par la densité de cestodes, suggérant la débilitation de l’hôte. La condition corporelle était corrélée positivement avec la distance parcourue, quel que soit le statut d’infection individuel. Nous avons également trouvé une relation négative entre la distance parcourue après l’infection et la densité de trématodes, suggérant que l’infection causant la maladie des points noirs diminue le niveau d’activité des hôtes. La témérité et l'exploration n'étaient pas affectées par la densité parasitaire ou la condition corporelle. Nous suggérons que la diminution de l’activité est causée par une réponse adaptative de l’hôte, visant à rediriger son énergie pour combattre l’infection. Sachant que les points noirs ont un cycle de vie complexe et que le crapet-soleil est un hôte intermédiaire, ce changement dans le comportement de l’hôte pourrait aider le parasite à compléter sa transmission aux oiseaux-hôtes piscivores en augmentant la prédation sur les poissons infectés. Bien que nous ne puissions confirmer la direction de causalité, nos résultats montrent qu’il existe un lien étroit entre le comportement et le parasitisme. Nous suggérons que deux mécanismes peuvent simultanément agir : le comportement initial des individus influence le risque d’infection, et l’infection peut créer de la variation au niveau de la plasticité comportementale des individus. / Parasitism is increasingly seen as an ecological factor that can create variations in individual behaviour. However, the direction of causality between behaviour and parasitism remains uncertain. Experimental infections are most often conducted in laboratories, limiting ecological inferences. Using a semi-natural experimental infection, we successfully infected pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) in a lake where they were exposed to various parasitic worms (trematodes, cestodes), allowing us to examine the effects of natural co-infection in hosts. We measured boldness, exploration, and activity before and after the experimental infection. Using a Bayesian approach, we found that initial behavioural traits strongly influence infection susceptibility: initially bolder and/or less active fish acquired a higher density of black spots (i.e., visible black spots under the skin, fins, and in the fish's muscles) and cestodes during the infection. Additionally, we found that body condition was reduced by cestode density, suggesting host debilitation. Body condition was positively correlated with distance swam, regardless of individual infection status. We also found a negative relationship between distance swam after infection and trematode density, suggesting that infection causing black spot disease decreases host activity levels. Boldness and exploration were not affected by parasite density or body condition. We suggest that a decrease in activity is caused by an adaptive host response to redirect its energy to combat the infection. However, since trematode parasites have a complex life cycle and pumpkinseed sunfish are intermediate hosts, decreases in activity levels following infection may make infected fish more susceptible to predation by piscivorous birds, which is needed for trematodes to complete their life cycles. While we cannot confirm the direction of causality, our results show a close link between behaviour and parasitism. We propose that two mechanisms may simultaneously operate: the initial behaviour of individuals influences their risk of infection, and infection can create variation in behavioural plasticity of individuals.

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit einer Methode zur Bestimmung von realistischeren Steifemoduln für eine genauere Setzungsprognose von Flachgründungen in sehr „laborfeindlichen“ veränderlich festen Gesteinen.
Die vergleichenden Laboruntersuchungen an teilverwitterten Keuperböden ergaben, dass die Steifemoduln aus den K0-Triaxialversuchen um den Faktor zwei bis drei größer sind als die Moduln aus den Standardoedometerversuchen.
Durch, sowohl analytische, wie auch numerische, Nachrechnungen der durchgeführten Feldversuche und der Setzungsmessungen konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass mit Moduln aus K0-Triaxialversuchen deutlich zutreffendere Setzungsprognosen im Keuper möglich sind, als mit Moduln aus den Oedometerversuchen.
Es konnte eine deutliche Abhängigkeit der Entwicklung des Steifemoduls von der Belastungsgeschichte, insbesondere im Übergangsbereich von der „echten“ Wiederbelastung zur Erstbelastung, gefunden werden.
Für grobe Näherungen, z.B. für Vorbemessungen, werden Abhängigkeiten zwischen Auflastspannungen und Steifemoduln für die Erst- und für die Wiederbelastung angegeben. So lassen sich Moduln für beliebige Spannungen direkt abschätzen.
Aus den abgeleiteten Moduluszahlen m des untersuchten Spannungs-Verformungsverhaltens von Böden, können, insbesondere unter Einbeziehung von Daten aus der internationalen Literatur, Korrelationsgleichungen in Abhängigkeit von Anfangsporenzahl bzw. Anfangsporenanteil mit guten bis sehr guten Regressionen angegeben werden.
Da der Steifeexponent a nur geringfügig vom Anfangsporenanteil n abhängt und an den in dieser Arbeit untersuchten Böden weder sinnvolle Korrelationen mit R > 0,8 zwischen a und n, noch Abhängigkeiten von a zur Korngröße gefunden wurden, werden für die Steifeexponenten Mittelwerte angegeben.
