Homomorphic images of semi-direct products

Nazzal, Lamies Joureus 01 January 2004 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis is to describe methods of constructing computer-free proofs of existence of finite groups and give useful techniques to perform double coset enumeration of groups with symmetric presentations over their control groups.

Irreducible representations of finite groups in general, $\textbf{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_4)$ in particular

Mevik Päts, Oskar January 2022 (has links)
In this paper linear representations of finite groups are introduced, and the associated character theory with it. Some work of linear representations of the dihedral group $D_n$ and the symmetric group $S_n$ is presented. \\We also take a look at the finite matrix groups $\textbf{GL}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $\textbf{SL}(\mathbb{F}_q)$. The character table for $\textbf{SL}(\mathbb{F}_4)$ and its representation spaces in an implicit form are calculated. We define the standard representation $\varphi $ of $\textbf{SL}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and prove that it is irreducible for an arbitrary finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$.

Representations From Group Actions On Words And Matrices

Anderson, Joel T 01 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the frequency of any irreducible representation of Sn in representations of Sn arising from group actions on words. Recognizing that representations arising from group actions naturally split across orbits yields combinatorial interpretations of the irreducible decompositions of representations from similar group actions. The generalization from group actions on words to group actions on matrices gives rise to representations that prove to be much less transparent. We share the progress made thus far on the open problem of determining the irreducible decomposition of certain representations of Sm × Sn arising from group actions on matrices.

(p,g,r) - generations and conjugacy class ranks of certain simple groups of the form, Sp(,2), M23 and A11

Motalane, Malebogo John January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (Mathematics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / A finite group G is called (l, m, n)-generated, if it is a quotient group of the triangle group T(l, m, n) = x, y, z|xl = ym = zn = xyz = 1-. In [43], Moori posed the question of finding all the (p, q, r) triples, where p, q and r are prime numbers, such that a non-abelian finite simple group G is a (p, q, r)-generated. In this thesis, we will establish all the (p, q, r)-generations of the following groups, the Mathieu sporadic simple group M23, the alternating group A11 and the symplectic group Sp(6, 2). Let X be a conjugacy class of a finite group G. The rank of X in G, denoted by rank(G : X), is defined to be the minimum number of elements of X generating G. We investigate the ranks of the non-identity conjugacy classes of the above three mentioned finite simple groups. The Groups, Algorithms and Programming (GAP) [26] and the Atlas of finite group representatives [55] are used in our computation / University of Limpopo

Let G be a group with odd order, and ϕ an automorphism on G, of order two, where G = [G,ϕ], and given a limitation in the order of the centralizer of ϕ regard to G, CG(ϕ), which induces a limitation in the order of derived group G′ of group G, and we also verified that G has a normal subgroup H that is ϕ-invariant, such that H′ ≤ Gϕ and its index [G : H] is bounded with the initial limitation. With the same hypothesis of the group G and with the same limitation of the order of the centralizer of the automorphism, let V a abelian p-group such that G⟨ϕ⟩ act faithful and irreductible on V, then there is a bounded constant k, limitated by a function depending only on the parameter m, where m is tha limitation in the order of CG(ϕ), and elements x1, ...xk ∈ G−ϕ such that V = ρϕx 1,...,xk(V−ϕ).

Uniquely Solvable Puzzles and Fast Matrix Multiplication

Mebane, Palmer 31 May 2012 (has links)
In 2003 Cohn and Umans introduced a new group-theoretic framework for doing fast matrix multiplications, with several conjectures that would imply the matrix multiplication exponent $\omega$ is 2. Their methods have been used to match one of the fastest known algorithms by Coppersmith and Winograd, which runs in $O(n^{2.376})$ time and implies that $\omega \leq 2.376$. This thesis discusses the framework that Cohn and Umans came up with and presents some new results in constructing combinatorial objects called uniquely solvable puzzles that were introduced in a 2005 follow-up paper, and which play a crucial role in one of the $\omega = 2$ conjectures.

The first chapter introduces the Group Rings, the Frobenius Groups and their properties. In the beginning of the second chapter are presented Conjectures of Zassenhaus . The weaker version of these conjectures is demonstrated for Amitsur Groups. At the end of the second chapter, the validity of that version is proven to Frobenius Groups. Such Frobenius Groups are those whose complement, checks the validity of this conjecture. In the final part we present the Hall subgroups and Schur-Zassenhaus Theorem.
