Fire-Place

Barák, Matyáš January 2017 (has links)
A floor, four walls and a ceiling – this space that we take for granted has not always been a feature for humans. In my Degree project, I learn what a space has meant for people. I learn what existed before we built a room for ourselves, what came after, and what was a role of a fireplace in this process. I do so to be build my own relationship with a space of four walls to be able to work with such a space as a context for my work.

Fireplaces: The Unmaking of the American Male Domestic Poet (Frost, Stevens, Williams, and Stephen Dunn)

Cannella, Wendy January 2011 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Paul Mariani / The fireplace has long stood at the center of the American home, that hearth which requires work and duty and which offers warmth and transformation in return. Fireplaces: The Unmaking of the American Male Domestic Poet takes a look at three major twentieth-century men whose poetry manifests anxieties about staying home to "keep the fire-place burning and the music-box churning and the wheels of the baby's chariot turning," as Wallace Stevens described it (L 246), during a time of great literary change when their peers were widely expatriating to Europe. Fireplaces considers contemporary poet Stephen Dunn as an inheritor of this mottled Modernist lineage of male lyric domesticity in the Northeastern United States, a tradition rattled by the terrorist events of September 11, 2001 after which Dunn leaves his wife and family home to remarry, thus razing the longstanding domestic frame of his poems. Ultimately Fireplaces leaves us with a question for twenty-first century verse--can a male poet still write about home? Or has the local domestic voice been supplanted at last by a placeless strain of lyric. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2011. / Submitted to: Boston College. Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. / Discipline: English.

An Architecture of Belonging

He, Xie 23 February 2021 (has links)
As the placeless globalization is accelerating around the world and especially in China, places that have strong ties to the particularities of a locale are desirable destinations to escape the generic monotony of placeless urbanization. The thesis here stipulates that even in a placeless globalization, opportunities exist to understand, interpret and celebrate local cultural phenomena. While many formal architectural artifacts may have outgrown their purpose and no longer have direct relevance today, a number of desires, customs and rituals persist as desirable conditions to be supported by architectural space. The thesis proposes to seek out an architecture, that embraces and reinterprets targeted aspects of the built form of traditional elements with modern means. / Master of Architecture / This thesis discusses possibilities to reinterpret the vernacular. Specifically, the sense of identity generated by the architecture traditions in Western China can be attributed to shape and construction of the roof, organization in plan, the central fire place, and a protected courtyard all enclosed by rammed earth. Reinterpretations of those elements in modern forms propose a continuity of culture and identity.

KOLMONOXIDFÖRGIFTNING : En kvantitativ studie om kunskapsläget hos villaägare och sambandet mellan elpriser och antalet fall / Carbon Monoxide Poisoning : A quantitative study on the state of knowledge of homeowners and the relationship between electricity prices and the number of cases

Knutar, Matilda January 2023 (has links)
During the last two years, the electricity prices in Sweden have risen due to unstable weather conditions, recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and limited access to electricity. This has led to people finding alternative ways of heating up their residences, e.g., fireplace. The Swedish Medical Products Agency found an increase in carbon monoxide poisoning related to residential heating during 2022, which gave the topic a boost in the news and media. The aim for the study was to investigate the knowledge about carbon monoxide poisoning among Swedish house owners, and to see if there was a correlation between electricity prices and number of cases carbon monoxide poisoning in Sweden during the period 2008-2021. A paper- and web survey was conducted and sent out to 480 Swedish houseowners, selected by Postnord. Electricity prices and cases of carbon monoxide poisoning was received from the internet via Statistics Sweden and the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. Regarding the questions covered in this study, house owners' knowledge varied. Recognition of the symptoms and prevalence of carbon monoxide poisoning was known by most of the respondents, whilst course of action in case of intoxication was not as well known. A weak positive correlation was shown between electricity prices and number of cases carbon monoxide poisoning. The increase in electricity prices and the number of cases carbon monoxide poisoning during the 2020s, would make it interesting to do further investigation.

Following the Historical Trails of the Jämtland's Triangle

Melander, Anna January 2023 (has links)
Growing up amidst the mountains of Jämtland sparked a passion in me to discover how nature could influence and inspire architectural design. For my diploma project, I envisioned four structures situated along two hiking trails, the Jämtland's Triangle in Åre Municipality and Sameslingan, in the Nature Reserve Paradiset in Huddinge. My design approach was a fusion of ecological and geometric principles. To create organic structures, I employed my understanding of topography, water flows, and hiking trails to shape the structures' geometric form. Furthermore, I drew inspiration from the Sami tradition of seamlessly blending into nature, leaving minimal impact on the landscape. To reflect this, I utilized natural materials such as wood, rammed earth, and stones from the site. The structures are also designed to be either easily assembled and disassembled or to gradually erode, becoming one with the earth and rocks. In this way, the structures will have a minimal environmental footprint and will be sustainable over time. My project also aims to shed light on the tragic history of colonialization of the Sami people in Jämtland. By doing so, my project aims to not only create sustainable structures but also to raise awareness and create a deeper connection between people and nature.
