The Metabolic Effects of Low Grade Inflammation on Postprandial Metabolism Following a High Fat Meal

Pittman, Joshua Taylor 28 August 2013 (has links)
Inflammation is a central feature of various metabolic diseases including obesity and type-II diabetes. For this study, we hypothesized postprandial metabolism following an acute, high fat (HF) meal to be impaired in mice pre-injected with an inflammatory agonist. To this end, C57BL/6J mice were injected with saline or lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 1μg/kgbw) following an overnight fast and gavaged 2hr post-injection with water or a HF meal in liquid form (5kcal; 21.4%SF, 40.8%UF, 27.1%CHO, 10.7%PRO). Blood and muscle samples taken 3hr post-gavage underwent ex vivo analysis. Overall, results demonstrated a metabolic response to a HF meal that was blocked in the presence of LPS. Metabolic flexibility, though unchanged following the HF meal alone, was reduced following the HF meal in the presence of LPS. Additionally, state-4 uncoupled mitochondrial respiration, which was increased following the HF meal, was also reduced following the HF meal in the presence of LPS. Similar near-significant trends were also observed with total palmitate oxidation. Although no independent response to a HF meal or LPS exposure was observed, a unique interaction between treatments significantly diminished ADP dependent, state-3 and maximal respiration. These effects do not appear to be dependent on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) since neither the HF meal nor LPS exposure resulted in increased production of ROS. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that acute activation of inflammatory pathways results in alterations in metabolic response to a HF meal in skeletal muscle from mice, although the mechanism underlying these effects is not yet understood. / Master of Science

Towards Efficient and Flexible Object Storage Using Resource and Functional Partitioning

Anwar, Ali 08 June 2018 (has links)
Modern storage systems are designed to manage data without considering the dynamicity of user or resource requirements. This design approach does not consider the complexities of the dynamically changing runtime application behaviors as well as the unique features of underlying resources. To this end, this dissertation studies how resource and functional partitioning strategies can improve efficiency and flexibility of object stores. This dissertation presents a series of practical and efficient techniques, algorithms, and optimizations to realize efficient and flexible object stores. The experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of our design choices and strategies to make object stores flexible and resource-aware. / Ph. D.

Market sentiment and firm investment decision-making

Danso, A., Lartey, T., Amankwah-Amoah, J., Adomako, Samuel, Lu, Q., Uddin, M. 03 July 2019 (has links)
Yes / While research on factors driving corporate investment decisions has blossomed, knowledge related to the Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO’s) market sentiment on investment decision outcomes is lacking. In this study, we extend the existing corporate finance literature by examining the underexplored issue of how CEOs’ market sentiment drives firms’ investment decisions. Capitalising on a large sample of US firms for the period 2004-2014, we uncovered some crucial observations. First, we found empirical support for our theoretical contention that market sentiment drives corporate investment decisions. Second, we established that, while financial flexibility induces managers to overinvest, the expectation of future profitability leads firms to underinvest during high sentiment periods. In addition, we uncovered that the 2007/08 financial crisis significantly impacted firm behaviour and realigned managerial decision-making. Thus, the sentiment-investment relationship is more pronounced during the crisis and the post-crisis periods. Our results are robust after accounting for the possibility of endogeneity and using alternative measures of both CEOs’ market sentiment and firm investment.

Service Provider Flexibility : A Strategic Perspective

Brozovic, Danilo January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is about service provider flexibility and how provider flexibility facilitates customer value creation in contexts where customer processes and activities change. Provider flexibility is delineated as a mechanism of value creation and defined as the ability of the service provider to respond to changes or to bring about changes that support its customers’ value creation. Although provider flexibility has been implied as a relevant factor in value creation, previous studies focusing on some kind of provider flexibility would benefit from a deeper understanding of the strategic role that service provider flexibility plays in value creation. The purpose of this study is to provide a framework that explicates the strategic role of provider flexibility in value creation. The role of provider flexibility in the adjustment of the provider’s processes and activities and the development of opportunities based on insights from customer interactions are thus emphasized. Moreover, while these insights from customer interactions can offer valuable development opportunities for the service provider, these opportunities yield returns only with the transfer of the insights back to the service provider’s organization. The research process evolves along five research articles that develop the understanding of the strategic role of provider flexibility in value creation. The study builds on the empirical data from five service organizations of large industrial firms. The empirical insights from the articles are expanded and their conclusions further developed by iteratively and abductively substantiating the research model. The discussion explicates how exercising provider flexibility—in the form of organizational flexibility in the provider sphere, interaction flexibility in the joint sphere, and flexibility in use in the customer sphere—contributes to value creation. Moreover, findings show that the provider and the customer are entwined in a service system surrounding their service relationship. Provider flexibility in this aspect functions not merely as a mechanism of value creation, but also as a carrier of knowledge and information about the customer. Having this dynamics in mind, the provider continues to use provider flexibility to reinvent itself and constantly evolve the organization. This thesis contributes to the literature by providing a framework that explicates the strategic role of provider flexibility in value creation. More specifically, the contributions are: 1) an increased understanding of how provider flexibility in value creation is exercised, placing provider flexibility at the core of the encompassing process of value creation, and thus explicating the manner in which the encompassing process of value creation can unfold; and 2) an increased understanding of the strategic role of the work of part-time marketers by delineating the process of provider flexibility in value creation where different aspects of provider flexibility in value creation are linked. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Manuscript. The Relative Contribution of Flexibility of the Back and Hamstring Muscles in the Performance of the Sit and Reach Component of the AAHPERD Health Related Fitness Test in Girls Thirteen to Fifteen Years of Age

Baker, Alice Ann 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to quantify the relative contribution of low back flexibility and hamstring flexibility in the sit and reach test item of the AAHPERD Health Related Fitness Test in order to examine the validity of the sit and reach test. Subjects were 100 female students, 13 to 15 years of age in physical education classes. Hamstring flexibility was measured using the Leighton flexometer. Spinal mobility was measured using a tape measure. The sit and reach test was performed according to instructions given in the AAHPERD Test Manual. Data were analyzed using correlation, linear regression, and multiple regression. Conclusions of the investigation were (1) hamstring flexibility is moderately related to the sit and reach test, (2) low back flexibility has a very small relationship to the sit and reach test, and (3) the sit and reach test is an inadequate measure of low back and hamstring flexibility.

The Relationship of the Sit and Reach Test to Criterion Measures of Hamstring and Back Flexibility in Adult Males and Females

Langford, Nancy Jane 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the criterion-related validity of the sit and reach test as a measure of hamstring and low back flexibility in adult males and females. Subjects were 52 males and 52 females, 20 to 45 years of age. Hamstring flexibility was measured using a goniometer. Spinal flexibility was measured using a tape measure and an inclinometer. The sit and reach test was performed according to the AAHPERD Health Related Fitness Test Manual. Data were analyzed using correlations and appropriate descriptive statistics. Conclusions of the investigation were: 1) in adult males 20 to 45, the sit and reach test is a valid measure of hamstring flexibility but has questionable validity as a measure of low back flexibility, 2) in adult females 20 to 45, the sit and reach test is a moderately valid measure of hamstring flexibility and is not a valid measure of low back flexibility.

Dépression et flexibilité cognitive : le cas des personnes âgées / Depression and cognitive flexibility : the case of the elderly

Bellasfar, Souhir 08 December 2009 (has links)
This thesis is a contribution to the understanding of adaptive capacity of depressed and non-depressed aging adults. To achieve this goal we have used an experimental method and a clinical observation: a six-year longitudinal case study. The relationship between depression and cognitive flexibility is assessed by means of shifting and fluency tasks applied to two groups of non-dement depressed and non-depressed elderly who reside in nursing institutions. The quantitative and qualitative analysis shows a decrease in cognitive flexibility which highlights a negative correlation between depression and flexibility scores. We establish an analogy between daily adaptive behaviours and quantitative data, and we propose a theoretical mechanism that explains the adaptive behaviour of the elderly. Our case study offers a deeper understanding of the relationship between depression and cognitive flexibility, particularly the improvements of adaptive capacities due to a decrease of depression.

Flexibilitetens främlingar : - om anställda i bemanningsföretag

Olofsdotter, Gunilla January 2008 (has links)
Temporary Work Agencies (TWAs) are an example of a trend towards flexibility in the labour market. By hiring staff from TWAs organisations can keep their staff numbers down. This however, refers to the client companies´ use or temps, and omits the intermediary, the TWA, which also needs various flexibility strategies in its activities. The main purpose of this thesis is to study the organising of TWAs supply of manpower to different clients companies, and how managers and temps experience their terms of employment, working conditions and relationships with regular employees at the client companies. Two qualitative case studies were conducted. In study one, interviews have been carried out with managers and temps in a TWA and a client company in Jämtland. In the second study, managers and temps in an international TWA in Sweden were interviewed. The results show that both managers and temps work under complex conditions and demands on flexibility. The managers shall, by flexible prioritising, satisfy demands from the TWA on profitability, demands from client companies´ for an adaptable workforce and temps need of employment and community. The results also indicate that temps have to balance between a position as stranger and outsider, and handle insecurity of the assignments duration and spatial location. They have to be able to manoeuvre between the power inequalities, stigmatisation and exclusion they encounter in working conditions and social interactions in client companies. To handle such situations the ideal temp and manager have to be able to vary between distance and nearness in spatiality and indifference and involvement in social relations.

Affärssystem och flexibilitet

Lind, Gabriel, Rydberg, Joakim January 2011 (has links)

Hansson, Elin, Söderblom, Emma January 2015 (has links)
