Cavitation in centrifugal pumps is the development of vapor bubbles from the pumped liquid into equipment suction region. Vapor bubbles developed somewhere in the flow, generally in the pump suction, will afterwards along the flow to collapse. This phenomenon is scientifically, technically and economically important. Scientifically, it is interesting because involves the flow of a fluid on liquid state, and simultaneously happens vapor bubbles development that also flow together the liquid fluid. Fluid vaporization and condensation processes are complex because involves phase change, a non-linear thermal phenomenon. Technically, it is important because when the flow happens with cavitation the flow and pump hydrodynamic parameters, generally, are strongly modified toward bigger thermodynamic irreversibility production. Economically, it is expensive because cavitation, generally, leads to thermodynamic process efficiency loss, and consequently it will have bigger costs for production of a given good, then decreasing economic efficiency and company competitiveness. Flow with cavitation in the pump suction presents three main devastating aspects: surging cavitation with low flow rate; steady cavitation with low total head; and cavitational erosion. Surging cavitation is characterized by unsteady, low frequency and high amplitude, intense bubbles development, producing strong vibration forces into the pumping system. Surging cavitation also causes the collapse of pumped fluid mass flow rate with values that goes from the normal flow to values that almost reach the zero flow, unsteadily. In surging cavitation, the cavitational erosion and the breakdown in total head are small. In steady cavitation the mass flow rate, and even the flow rate... Incorporating Spatial and Temporal Variation of Watershed Response in a GIS-based Hydrologic Model

Al-Smadi, Mohammad Ahmed 16 December 1998 (has links)
The hydrograph at the watershed outlet was simulated using the time-area curve concept implemented in a geographic information system (GIS). The goal of this study was to determine if hydrograph prediction accuracy would be improved by accounting for spatial and temporal variation of excess rainfall. Three models with different methods of estimating excess rainfall were developed: the Distributed Curve Number (DCN) model uses a CN for each cell, generating spatially distributed excess rainfall using the Soil Conservation Services curve number method (SCS, 1972); the Uniform Curve Number (UCN) model uses a single "average" CN for the whole watershed, thus generating a uniform excess rainfall; the Phi index model which uses the Phi-index method to generate uniform excess rainfall. With the aid of a GIS, the cumulative flow time to the watershed outlet is estimated for each cell in the watershed and the isochrones of equal travel time are developed. The time-area curve is developed in the form of an S curve. The spatially distributed 1-hr unit hydrograph is derived from the S curve as the difference between the S curve and its value lagged by 1-hr. The models used in this study describe the physical processes and flow mechanisms. They also reflect effects of watershed characteristics (slope, landuse, soil drainage potential) and excess rainfall intensity on the resulting hydrograph at the watershed outlet. Surface flow is divided into channel flow and overland flow based on the upstream drainage area. Flow is routed to the watershed outlet through a channel network derived from the watershed Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The models developed were tested against observed rainfall-runoff data from the 1153-ha Virginia Piedmont watershed (Owl Run). A total of 30 storms were simulated, with statistical comparison of peak flow rate, time to peak flow rate, and the hydrograph shape. The hydrograph shape was compared both visually and statistically. Results indicated that the two models which account for temporal variation in excess rainfall (DCN and UCN) predicted the output hydrograph much more accurately than the Phi model which lacks the ability to capture the temporal variation of excess rainfall. For this watershed, results showed that the spatial variability in excess rainfall which was accounted for by the DCN model did not improve the prediction accuracy over the UCN model which lacks that ability. However, a sensitivity analysis for the effect of the spatial distribution of the excess rainfall indicated that can be a significant effect of spatial distribution on the predicted hydrograph. / Master of Science

Factors influencing the mucosal immune response to exercise

Allgrove, Judith E. January 2007 (has links)
Despite the abundance of research conducted into the effects of exercise on mucosal immunity the results remain controversial. Much of the inconsistencies arise from the exercise protocols, the participants studied and their nutritional status, as well as methodological and analytical differences. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the influence of some of these factors, and to investigate potential means of enhancing the mucosal immune response to exercise. In study 1 (Chapter 3) it was shown that a fed or fasted state 2 h prior to exercise had no effect on the s-IgA concentration or secretion rate during prolonged exercise. However, when participants were fed during exercise (Chapter 4), the secretion rate of salivary antimicrobial proteins lysozyme and a-amylase increased, but sIgA remained unchanged. These changes were likely due to the activation of mechanical and gustatory receptors leading to a reflex stimulation of protein secretion via the autonomic nerves, rather than changes in stress hOnliones, since cortisol did not change significantly during exercise. Study 3 (Chapter 5) extended these findings where it was demonstrated that chewing flavoured gum during exercise enhanced lysozyme and a-amylase secretion but resulted in a small reduction in s-IgA secretion rate. Salivary antimicrobial proteins are affected by the exercise intensity since both s-IgA and lysozyme secretion rate increased post -exercise following an incremental test to exhaustion, but not after exercise at 50% Y02max. Moreover, lysozyme secretion rate was also elevated following exercise at 75% Y02mru<, whereas s-IgA remained unchanged. These effects are thought to be mediated by increased sympathetic nervous system activity reflected by the concomitant increases in (lamylase and chromogranin A, rather than the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Resting mucosal immunity exhibits significant gender differences. In study 1 (Chapter 3) s-IgA concentration, secretion rate and osmolality were found to be lower in females than in males at rest. In addition, saliva flow rate was found to be lower in females compared with males in study 5 (Chapter 7). However, these differences did not appear to influence the salivary responses to acute exercise or exercise training. Chronic exercise training in elite male and female swimmers resulted in lower levels of s-IgA secretion rate following periods of intense training prior to competition compared with post-competition (Chapter 7), but these levels were not directly associated with reported episodes of respiratory illness.

Measurement of Fluid and Particle Transport through Narrow Passages

Ghazi, Christopher 01 January 2014 (has links)
There are many instances where fluid and particles traveling through a narrow passage, such as a crack in a window or door, have large but sometimes unseen effects on our daily lives. For instance, in the cold months of the year a pressure gradient can exists between the inside and outside of a building which causes cold, outdoor air to flow inside through any cracks; significantly decreasing heating efficiency. This inflow of atmospheric air can bring with it dangerous contaminant particles to the inside of a building. Pollution can also occur inside a structure from internal sources of contamination, such as smoke generation from a fire. This thesis represents a two-fold examination of these phenomena. The first part of the thesis showcases a method for local measurement of air leakage flow rate, which can be used to quickly assess leakage rates across a surface, such as a window. The method uses a small local enclosure with constant volume placed about a region on the structure under investigation, which is depressurized and injected with a small concentration of carbon dioxide as a tracer gas. The time variation of the pressure and carbon dioxide concentration inside the enclosure are monitored and used to quantify the leakage flow rate as a function of pressure difference. Because of the small size of the enclosure, advanced data processing techniques are necessary to reduce uncertainty in determination of the rate of change of the carbon dioxide concentration that arises from sensor variability. Results of a laboratory demonstration of the proposed leakage detection and characterization device are reported for the problem of leakage through a circular hole in a plate with prescribed pressure differences. Experimental results from the laboratory tests are found to be in excellent agreement with results of a numerical simulation of leakage flow through a hole, as well as predictions from a number of empirical equations for this problem found in the literature. The second part of the thesis is a numerical study of particle capture in the entrance region of a crack, which is a phenomenon previously not well understood or accounted for in empirical correlations. The computational domain for laminar flow through a crack consists of the crack channel and both inlet and exit reservoirs that are much larger than the channel width. The simulations examined different mechanisms for particle capture within the channel entrance region, including collision on the inlet reservoir wall just outside the crack channel, collision within the crack channel due to cross-stream inertia imparted by the entrance flow, collision induced by Brownian diffusion both on the inlet reservoir wall outside of the channel and within the channel, and gravitational collision within the channel. A detailed study of the variation of the entrance penetration factor with parameters such as the Stokes, Peclet, and Froude numbers was performed, and comparison of the numerical predictions with different theoretical expressions were made when the latter were available. Validity of the assumption of penetration factor independence was also examined for cases where both entrance region inertia and gravitational settling are significant.

Factors influencing upper respiratory tract illness incidence in athletes : the important role of vitamin D

He, Cheng-Shiun January 2015 (has links)
Firstly, the aims of the study were to investigate the influences of various factors, sex differences, Cytomegalovirus/Epstein-Barr virus (CMV/EBV) serostatus and vitamin D concentrations on respiratory illness incidence and immune function during the winter months in a student cohort of endurance athletes. In Chapter 3, the findings of the study concur with recent reports of illness incidence at major competitive games which indicate that female athletes may be more susceptible than their male counterparts to upper respiratory tract illness (URTI) symptoms and that lower oral-respiratory mucosal immunity may, in part, account for this. It was also found that previous coinfection with CMV and EBV might promote protective immune surveillance to lower the risk of URTI. In addition, it can be concluded that athletes with low plasma vitamin D concentrations may have a higher risk of URTI and suffer more severe symptoms when URTI is present. This may be due to impaired mucosal and systemic immunity as secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) secretion, cathelicidin levels and antigen-stimulated pro-inflammatory cytokine production appear to be increased by vitamin D-dependent mechanisms. A series of follow-up studies were also conducted to examine the effect of vitamin D on mucosal and systemic immunity in athletes. In Chapter 4, it was reported that the influence of vitamin D on circulating cytokines might be different in athletes compared with non-athletes and that both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine production by multi-antigen stimulated whole blood culture were not influenced by 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D (1, 25(OH)2D) iconcentrations within the normal healthy range. In Chapter 5, it was found that 5000 IU of vitamin D3 supplementation daily appears to have a beneficial effect in up-regulating the expression of SIgA and cathelicidin in athletes during a winter training period. Nevertheless, the findings reported in Chapter 6 showed that there were no significant effects of vitamin D status and a 4-week period of daily high does vitamin D3 supplementation on salivary antimicrobial protein (AMP) responses to prolonged exercise. In conclusion, a series of studies in this thesis have demonstrated the influence of various factors (sex differences, CMV/EBV serostatus and vitamin D concentrations) on susceptibility to URTI among athletes. Moreover, it was suggested that vitamin D3 supplementation could have a positive effect on immune function and lead to decreased incidence of respiratory infections.

The effect of flow rate, spray distance and concentration of polymer quenchant on spray quenching performance of CHTE and IVF probes

Lee, Lin 02 May 2005 (has links)
An experimental investigation has been conducted on CHTE quench probes and IVF quench probes to determine the influence of flow rate, spray distance and concentration of AQ251 polymer quenchant on the cooling rate and heat transfer coefficient during spray quenching. Time-temperature data has been collected for each spraying condition using the CHTE spray quenching system. Heat transfer coefficients as a function of temperature have been estimated and compared by using lumped thermal capacity model and an inverse heat conduction model. The results revealed that the maximum cooling rate increases with increasing in the flow rate in varying concentration of polymer quenchant in both probes. It was also found that the cooling rate decreases with the increase of the concentration of polymer quenchant.

Tobacco use and dental caries: tobacco use status, product types, and mediation by saliva flow rate

Abuljadayel, Layla Waleed 25 October 2017 (has links)
OBJECTIVES: Despite declining tobacco consumption in the U.S., it remains a public health concern. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of tobacco consumption, different tobacco products and smoking duration on dental caries risk among different populations. METHODS: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data were used in an epidemiological cross-sectional study of a representative sample of U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population to investigate the influence of tobacco use and different tobacco products on caries prevalence among adolescents and adults. The outcomes were DMFT and DFT indices. Data from the Dental Longitudinal Study (DLS), a closed-panel prospective cohort study of oral health and aging, was used in longitudinal design to determine if changes in tobacco use status change the risk of developing new caries in adult men. Caries increment was used as an outcome. In addition, a cross-sectional study, using DLS, evaluated the association between smoking duration and caries prevalence, and to determine if it is mediated by unstimulated saliva flow rate. DMFS was used as an outcome. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were conducted on dental caries outcomes by tobacco use status and product consumption. Multiple regression, GEE, and mediation analyses were conducted controlling for confounders. RESULTS: Active tobacco use was significantly associated with dental caries, with the highest caries prevalence compared to passive or non-use among adolescents and adults (P-value <.0001). Among adolescents, passive tobacco users had higher caries prevalence than non-tobacco users. In the DLS, continuous use, quitting and starting/ restarting tobacco use between examinations were all associated with higher caries increments (p-value <0.01). Smoking duration was significantly associated with caries prevalence as long smoking duration (31- 70 years) had on average 14 more DMFS than nonsmokers (p-value= 0.0002) and USFR may partially mediate this relation by about 8.70%. CONCLUSION: Dental caries was significantly associated with active tobacco use among adolescents and adults. Caries prevalence is also high among adolescents passively exposed to tobacco. In adult men, continuous tobacco use was associated with higher caries increments. Long-term smoking was associated with high caries prevalence and this relation could be partially mediated by unstimulated saliva flow rate. / 2019-09-26T00:00:00Z

Estudo da uniformidade de emissão de água utilizando diferentes espaçamentos entre gotejadores na linha lateral /

Andrade, Luiz Antonio de, 1956- January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: The use of drip irrigation in horticultural and annual cycle fruits in Brazil is growing. The correct sizing of a drip irrigation project, using High Emission Uniformity Coefficients, is in accordance with society's pressure for a rational use of natural resources. Sizing longer lateral irrigation lines promotes a cost reduction in the installation costs of a project. A model for a drip irrigation lateral composed of two segments is proposed; the last having a standard spacing, the initial segment having a special spacing between emitters, higher than the standard, with the objective of obtaining longer laterals, without decreasing the Emission Uniformity Coefficient of water, EUC.A theoretically dimensioned drip hose, in accordance with the proposed model, with a total length of 150.6 m, having the initial 59.7 m an emitter spacing of 0.3508 m, while the final 90.9 m an emitter spacing of 0.30 m, presented a flow variation of 8.05% and an EUC of 97.62%. It is 36% longer than a drip irrigation hose with a 0.30 m emitter spacing, with a 10% flow variation and a EUC of 94.71%. A substitution of the standard lateral model for the proposed lateral model still needs a field trial validation in order to justify its use, considering that the commercial production of this model is viable. / Doutor

Flux hydrothermaux dans le manteau lithosphérique : étude expérimentale du processus de serpentinisation / Hydrothermal fluxes in the mantle lithosphere : An experimental study of the serpentinization process

Escario Perez, Sofia 21 September 2018 (has links)
The hydrothermal alteration of the mantle lithosphere at mid-ocean ridges provides a mechanism for transferring heat and mass between the deep Earth and the overlaying ocean. The mantle lithosphere is constituted by ultramafic rocks, also called Peridotites. They comprise more than 70% of olivine, associated pyroxenes and minor mineral phases. The percolation of seawater into the ultramafic basement produces the alteration of olivine and pyroxenes to serpentine through the so-called serpentinization process and is associated to oxidation and carbonation reactions, the later when CO2 is present. The serpentinization process has special interest on H2 production, CO2 storage, development of life, and the production of economically valuable ore-deposits concentrated at hydrothermal vents. The sustainability and efficiency of the reactions requires penetration and renewal of fluids at the mineral-fluid interface. Oceanic detachment faults and fractures are the highly permeable zones allowing seawater derived fluids to penetrate deeply into the mantle lithosphere. However, the serpentinization process lead to the precipitation of low density minerals that can fill the porous network, clogging flow paths efficiently that may in turn modify the hydrodynamic properties and the reactivity of the reacted rocks. This PhD thesis aims at better understanding the feedback effects of chemical reactions on the hydrodynamic rock properties occurred on highly permeable zones during the earliest stages of alteration of the ultramafic basement. It focuses in particular on the changes in texture and chemical reaction paths of ultramafic rocks by assessing the effects of (i) flow rate and (ii) CO2-rich saline fluids. Two suite of reactive percolation experiments were performed at T=170-190°C and P=25MPa. The first suite of experiments consisted in injecting artificial seawater into porous compressed olivine powder cores over a wide range of constant flow rates. X-Ray µ-tomography of high resolution was acquired before and after the experiment run with high flow rates; in order to evaluate the micro-structural changes of the rock occurred during the serpentinization reaction. The second suite of experiments consisted in injecting CO2-rich saline fluids into peridotite cores mechanically fractured. The results allowed us to differentiate: (1) That, a control of flow infiltration rate at the pore-scale can control the local fluid compositions and the development of different reaction paths at the sample-scale. (2) The development of different reaction paths and textural changes in the rock depends on the concentration of CO2 dissolved in solution. (3) The formation of carbonate minerals (MgCO3) can store CO2 in a form of stable mineral at long-term. (4) A control of the concentration of dissolved CO2(g) and the fracture network can enhance/limit the efficiency of CO2-storage in peridotite fractured reservoirs. These new supporting data suggest a complex control of the structure of the ultramafic rocks in serpentinization process and provides new insights for the potential CO2-storage in peridotite fractured reservoirs.
