ideal range to ensure prevention of dental caries, without exposing the population to the risk
of developing dental fluorosis. The objectives of this research were: to monitor the
concentrations of fluoride in public water supply of São Luís, Maranhão, Brasil, from
February 2008 to January 2009; and perform the mapping of residual levels of fluoride in
isolated wells. Forty sampling points were conveniently selected, representing 39 districts of
the municipality. The points were selected from areas of the company responsible for public
water supply and also due to the proximity to the existing elevated tanks. For the mapping, it
was considered estimated 20% of the wells considered in the areas of performance. The
analysis of the fluoride concentration was performed in triplicate, using the combined
electrode ion-specific for fluoride (ORION 9409BN) and reference electrode (ORION
900200), connected with the potentiometer ORION 710 A, previously calibrated. After
analyzed, the samples were considered adequate when the fluoride concentration was within
the recommended limits from 0.60 to 0.80 ppm F (criterion I) or within the stipulated range of
0.55 ppm to 0.84 ppm F (criterion II). The results showed, in fluoridated locations, large
variation between the minimum and maximum concentrations. Considering the whole, the
average for the city was 0.58 ppm F (± 0.24) and median 0.61 ppm F, with minimum 0.02
ppm F and maximum 1.33 ppm F. Of the 480 samples, the highest percentage was considered
inadequate (62.9%) by criterion I, while the criterion II was 48.3%. Regarding the mapping,
we observed residual fluoride levels below 0.11 ppm in the waters of isolated wells. We
conclude that there was unequal access to fluoridated water by the population Ludovicense.
The fluoridation program in São Luís-MA needs improvement. Therefore, surveillance
measures based on external control and operational control becomes essential to ensure the
efficacy and effectiveness of the method. / A concentração de flúor nas águas de sistemas públicos de abastecimento deve ser mantida
dentro da faixa ideal para garantir prevenção da cárie dentária, sem expor a população ao
risco de desenvolvimento da fluorose dentária. Os objetivos desta pesquisa foram: monitorar
mensalmente as concentrações de flúor das águas de abastecimento público de São Luís,
Maranhão, Brasil, no período de Fevereiro de 2008 a Janeiro de 2009; e realizar o
mapeamento de teores residuais de flúor em poços isolados. Foram selecionados
convenientemente 40 pontos de coleta, representando 39 bairros do município. Os pontos
foram estabelecidos a partir das áreas de atuação da Companhia responsável pelo
abastecimento público de água e também em função da proximidade com os reservatórios
elevados existentes. Para o mapeamento, foi considerada estimativa de 20% do total dos
poços considerados nas áreas de atuação. A análise da concentração de flúor foi realizada em
triplicata, utilizando-se o eletrodo combinado íon-específico para flúor (ORION 9409BN) e
eletrodo de referência (ORION 900200), conectados com o potenciômetro ORION 710 A,
previamente calibrados. Após analisadas, as amostras foram consideradas adequadas quando a
concentração de flúor estava dentro dos limites recomendados de 0,60 a 0,80 ppm F (critério
I) ou dentro do intervalo estipulado de 0,55 ppm F a 0,84 ppm F (critério II). Os resultados
demonstraram, nas localidades fluoretadas, grande variação entre as concentrações mínimas e
máximas. Considerando-se a totalidade, a média para o município foi 0,58 ppm F (±0,24) e a
mediana 0,61 ppm F, apresentando valor mínimo 0,02 ppm F e valor máximo 1,33 ppm F. Do
total de 480 amostras, o maior percentual foi considerado inadequado (62,9%) pelo critério I,
enquanto que, pelo critério II foi de 48,3%. A respeito do mapeamento, observaram-se teores
de flúor residual inferiores a 0,11 ppm nas águas dos poços isolados. Conclui-se haver um
acesso desigual às águas fluoretadas por parte da população ludovicense. O programa de
fluoretação em São Luís- MA necessita de melhorias. Por isso, medidas de vigilância
baseadas no heterocontrole e no controle operacional tornam-se fundamentais para garantir a
eficácia e efetividade do método.

Etude et caractérisation de céramiques transparentes fluorées pour lasers de forte puissance moyenne / Study and characterization of fluoride transparent ceramics for high-power lasers applicationsSarthou, Julia 13 November 2017 (has links)
Ce travail de thèse a pour objectif d'étudier et de mieux comprendre les relations structure-propriétés de céramiques transparentes Yb:CaF2 obtenues par voie humide, en particulier sur le plan des propriétés thermiques. Dans un premier temps nous présentons les atouts des céramiques transparentes Yb:CaF2 dans le cadre d'une application en laser de puissance. Le procédé de fabrication par voie humide des céramiques est ensuite décrit au cours d'une seconde partie. Les résultats d'analyses et caractérisations diverses ayant eu lieu à différentes étapes de la synthèse des céramiques sont présentés, menant à une optimisation du procédé de fabrication. Un troisième chapitre est ensuite consacré à une étude expérimentale des propriétés thermiques de nos céramiques, qui montre en particulier une grande similitude avec les propriétés des monocristaux. Cette étude est complétée par un volet de modélisation décrit dans un quatrième chapitre. Deux modèles prédictifs de conductivité thermique sont explorés et comparés, et permettent d'apporter une explication théorique aux tendances observées expérimentalement. L'hypothèse selon laquelle l'impact des joints de grains sur la diminution de la conductivité thermique est négligeable devant celui du dopage est notamment confirmée. Enfin, dans une cinquième et dernière partie, plusieurs pistes sont explorées afin d'apporter une explication à l'échauffement supérieur des céramiques par rapport aux monocristaux observé en conditions laser. / This PHD work is aiming at getting a better understanding of the structure-properties relationships of Yb:CaF2 transparent ceramics obtained with a wet-route fabrication process, with a special focus on thermal properties. At first, we introduce the assets of Yb:CaF2 transparent ceramics in the frame of high-power laser applications. The wet-route fabrication process is then described in a second chapter. The results of several analysis and characterizations performed along different steps of the ceramics synthesis are also presented, leading to an optimized fabrication process. The third chapter then focuses on an experimental study of the thermal properties of our ceramics, which shows in particular an important similarity with single crystals properties. This study is complemented with a modelization work described in chapter four. Two predictive models of thermal conductivity are investigated and compared. They bring a theoretical explanation to the tendencies experimentally observed. We thereby confirm the hypothesis according to which the grain boundaries impact on thermal conductivity is negligible with respect to that of the doping element introduction. Finally, in the fifth and last chapter, several hypothesis are investigated in order to bring an explanation to the ceramics overheating observed in laser conditions, which is superior to single crystals.

A vigilância dos teores de flúor nas águas de abastecimento público nas capitais do BrasilCesa, Kátia Teresa January 2007 (has links)
A temática central do presente trabalho é a vigilância dos teores de flúor nas águas de abastecimento público nas capitais brasileiras. A fluoretação de águas é a principal política pública para prevenção de cáries no país, e a concentração adequada do fluoreto na água é fundamental para a obtenção dos benefícios e controle dos riscos associados a essa medida. O VIGIAGUA é um programa nacional coordenado pelo Ministério da Saúde/ Secretaria de Vigilância em Saúde, implantado em praticamente todas as capitais brasileiras e tem, entre suas responsabilidades, o monitoramento dos teores de flúor nas águas de abastecimento. Essa pesquisa teve por objetivo estudar o Sistema de Vigilância dos Teores de Flúor nas Águas de Abastecimento Público nas capitais do Brasil, em 2005. As informações sobre a operacionalização do sistema foram obtidas por meio de um questionário estruturado, enviado para Secretarias Municipais de Saúde. Para descrever a prevalência de amostras com teores adequados, foram analisados 1911 registros de fluoreto informados no SISAGUA. As variáveis principais foram: o número de coletas/ mês; a consolidação e análise dos resultados; o teor encontrado nas amostras, em ppm, e a divulgação das informações. Foi realizada a análise da distribuição de freqüências das variáveis em estudo. Os resultados mostraram que, em 2005, 17 capitais brasileiras (63%) fluoretavam as águas de abastecimento e 10 (37%) não. O Norte e o Nordeste do país concentraram nove das dez capitais sem fluoretação. Cinco capitais monitoraram o fluoreto nas águas de abastecimento em todas as suas etapas, e cinco registraram as informações no SISAGUA. O maior índice de adequação nas amostras, foi na cidade de Porto Alegre/RS com 80% dos teores na faixa recomendada, sendo que, nessa capital a vigilância dos teores de flúor tem atuado ininterruptamente, com a ampla divulgação dos resultados, desde 1994. A vigilância do fluoreto não foi executada em 71% das capitais brasileiras, embora esse parâmetro seja um integrante do Programa Nacional de Vigilância da Qualidade da Água. O intercâmbio de informação entre a Vigilância em Saúde e as Instituições Odontológicas não foi realizado na maioria das capitais. Em apenas duas, houve a divulgação de informações relativas ao fluoreto para os Conselhos de Saúde. Tendo em vista o alto índice de amostras fora dos padrões e a ausência de informações referentes ao parâmetro fluoreto no SISAGUA, pode se concluir que o fluoreto não foi analisado pela maioria das equipes de vigilância da qualidade da água nas capitais brasileiras. / The main subject of this study is the fluoride surveillance system of public drinking water supply in the Brazilian capitals. Water fluoridation is the most important policy to prevent tooth decay in the country. Proper levels of fluoride in water are fundamental to assure risk control and health benefits related to this policy. The National Program of Drinking Water Surveillance (VIGIAGUA) is coordinated by the National Health Department as well as the Department of Water Surveillance and has been implemented in the majority of the Brazilian capitals. One of its many responsibilities is the maintenance and control of the fluoride levels of public drinking water. The aim of this research was to study the fluoride surveillance system of public drinking water supplies in the capitals of Brazil, in 2005. Data about the surveillance system was collected through a questionnaire, sent to the Health Department of each Brazilian City. To describe the prevalence of samples with proper levels of fluoride, 1911 records of fluoride information were examined from SISAGUA. The main variables studied were: number of samples by month; analysis and consolidation of results; levels of fluoride recorded, in ppm; and the reported information. Frequency distributions were used to analyze data. The results showed that in 2005, 17 (63%) Brazilian capitals had fluoridate drinking water supply and 10 (37%) had not. Nine of the ten capitals without fluoridated water were located in the North and North East of the country. The surveillance of public water fluoride levels following all the proper steps was done in five capitals, and five actually reported the findings to the SISAGUA. The largest number of samples with adequate levels of fluoride was found in the city Porto Alegre/RS, where 80% of the water samples had the recommended levels of fluoride. It is important to note that in Porto Alegre the fluoride surveillance system has been working uninterruptedly and properly reported since 1994. Most (71%) of the Brazilian capitals do not perform the fluoride surveillance, although this has been an integrated parameter of the VIGIAGUA. There was no exchange of information between the Health Surveillance and the Dental Institutions in most of the capitals. Only two reported all the relevant information to the State and City Social Health Control Departments. Considering the high number of inadequate samples and the lack of information as regards fluoride in SISAGUA it was concluded that fluoride was not analyzed by the majority of the themes of public water surveillance in the Brazilian capitals.

SYNTHESIS AND DEVELOPMENT OF SILICON ANALOG OF FLUORESCEIN FLUOROPHORES AND ESTERIFICATION CATALYSTSSattenapally, Narsimha 01 December 2012 (has links)
The synthesis and development of new materials and the improvement of the existing materials are a continuous quest for scientists. There is a constant need for new materials that have more advantages over the existing ones. The research to develop new materials can be appreciated in high magnitude, as the new materials improve the livelihood. In this dissertation, we are presenting our progress in developing new materials, such as fluorescence fluorophores as probes, and esterification catalysts. In the first part of the dissertation, the synthesis and characterization of a novel silicon analog of fluorescein (silyl fluorescein) was studied in detail. The photo-physical properties and toxicity studies of these fluorophores are also discussed. Compared to fluorescein, silyl fluorescein displayed a 90 nm longer wavelength in its absorption and emission. Silyl fluorescein showed good solubility in water and organic solvents, and has a considerable fluorescence quantum yield compared to fluorescein. Silyl fluorescein was found to be moderately toxic under light and non-toxic in dark, where as fluorescein toxicity was found to be greater than silyl fluorescein both in the dark and under light. Two probes from our novel silyl fluorescein fluorophore were developed and studied. SIF HySOx is probe for hypochlorous acid (HOCl), which is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) found in cells that are stressed due to various diseases. The HOCl probe was synthesized and its photo-physical properties were studied. It was found to be selective and sensitive only to HOCl. A fluoride probe (DTBDMS SIF P) was also developed from silyl fluorescein. Its synthesis and photo-physical properties were also studied. The probe displayed excellent selectivity and sensitivity to fluoride (TBAF) in the presence of other halides and bases. Future directions on novel fluorophore are briefly mentioned. Second part of the dissertation is focused on the screening of two organic esterification catalysts which were synthesized by Dr. Liu and Dr. Wong. The catalysts which are synthesized from pyridine and dinitrobenzene moieties were screened with several carboxylic acids and alcohols. Catalyst 8-4 was shown to be moderately active in the esterification of carboxylic acids and alcohols. It has no selectivity in the esterification of primary, secondary, tertiary alcohols, and the carboxylic acids that are attached to those carbons. Catalyst 9-1 however, was more efficient in the esterification of carboxylic acids and alcohols. Catalyst 9-1 displayed selectivity in the esterification of primary, over secondary, over tertiary alcohols, and the carboxylic acids that are attached to those carbons. Catalyst 9-1 gave up to 95% isolated yields.

Efeitos de agentes tópicos de flúor de baixa concentração sobre a saliva, biofilme e esmalte dentalSouza, Daniela Correia Cavalcante January 2007 (has links)
Esta dissertação é constituída de dois artigos e teve como objetivo avaliar se o uso adicional de solução fluoretada para bochecho (SF) ao uso de dentifrício fluoretado (DF) é equivalente ao aumento da freqüência de aplicação do DF em relação (1) às mudanças clínicas na superfície do esmalte, na sua desmineralização e no seu conteúdo de flúor; (2) à concentração de flúor na saliva e no biofilme dental 8 horas após os tratamentos. No primeiro artigo, quinze voluntários participaram de um estudo in situ, onde utilizaram dispositivos mandibulares contendo blocos de esmalte dental bovino. Durante os 3 períodos experimentais, de 14 dias cada, os espécimes foram expostos a um alto desafio cariogênico pelo gotejamento de solução de sacarose 20%, 8 vezes ao dia. O estudo teve um delineamento cruzado e os voluntários foram submetidos aos seguintes tratamentos: (T I) escovação com DF (1100 ppm F na forma de NaF) 2x/dia + H2O; (T II) DF 2x/dia + H2O + SF (225 ppm F na forma de NaF) 1x/dia; (T III) DF 3x/dia + H2O. Ao final deste período, os blocos foram removidos e avaliados em relação às mudanças nas características clínicas de superfície e submetidos às análises de microdureza superficial e transversal e do conteúdo de flúor no esmalte. De acordo com os resultados, o uso do DF 3x/dia foi o único tratamento que diferiu do uso do DF 2x/dia em relação às mudanças na superfície do esmalte e na sua desmineralização (p<0,05). Em relação ao conteúdo de flúor no esmalte, as diferenças entre os tratamentos não foram estatisticamente significativas (p>0,05). No segundo artigo, através de um estudo in vivo foram avaliadas as concentrações de flúor na saliva e no biofilme dental 8 horas após o uso dos tratamentos. Quarenta voluntários foram submetidos a diferentes freqüências de uso de DF ou dentifrício placebo (DP) por 1 semana, seguido de enxágüe com água ou água e SF, de acordo com o delineamento cruzado, em 4 grupos de tratamento: (T I) DP 2x/dia + H2O; (T II) DF 2x/dia + H2O; (T III) DF 2x/dia + H2O + SF 1x/dia; (T IV) DF 3x/dia + H2O. Após cada período experimental, as amostras de saliva e biofilme dental foram coletadas para análise dos níveis de flúor. As concentrações de flúor nas amostras de saliva e biofilme dental não diferiram significativamente entre os tratamentos, assim como não diferiram do período livre de flúor (p>0,05). Podemos concluir em relação ao primeiro artigo que o aumento da freqüência de uso do DF pode substituir o uso adicional de SF aos procedimentos convencionais de escovação com DF. Em relação ao segundo artigo, os resultados sugerem que o uso do DF 2x/dia seguido por SF ou escovação extra com DF não aumenta a retenção de flúor na saliva e no biofilme dental após 8 horas. / This master thesis presents two articles aiming to assess whether the additional daily use of fluoride mouthrinse (FR) (225 ppm F as NaF) to the use of fluoride dentifrice (FD) (1100 ppm F as NaF) is equivalent to increase the FD application frequency (1) on enamel surface changes, demineralization and fluoride content; and (2) on the fluoride levels in saliva and dental biofilm samples 8 hours after treatments. In the first article, the subjects (15) used a mandibular appliance containing blocks of bovine enamel with microhardness determinated previously. During the three experimental phases, 14 days each, the specimens were exposed to a high cariogenic challenge from dripping 20% sucrose solution 8 times/day. The volunteers were submitted, under a crossover design, to 3 treatment groups: (T I) 2x/day FD + H2O; (T II) 2x/day FD + H2O + 1x/day FR; (T III) 3x/day FD + H2O. At the end of each experimental phase, the enamel blocks were assessed with respect to surface clinical changes, surface and cross-sectional microhardness and total fluoride content. The 3x/day FD usage was the only treatment tested that differed from the conventional twice daily toothbrushing procedures on reducing enamel surface changes and demineralization (p<0.05). Regarding to the enamel fluoride content, the differences among treatments were not statistically significant (p>0.05). In the second article, the fluoride concentrations in saliva and dental biofilm 8 hours were analyzed after the use of treatments. The subjects (40) were submitted to different frequencies of use of FD or placebo dentrifice (PD) for 1 week to 4 treatment group: (T I) 2x/day PD + H2O; (T II) 2x/day FD + H2O; (T III) 2x/day FD + H2O + 1x/day FR; (T IV) 3x/day FD + H2O. After each experimental period, samples of saliva and dental biofilm were collected for fluoride levels analysis. Fluoride concentrations in saliva and dental biofilm did not differ statistically among treatments, as well as they did not differ from the F-free period (p>0.05).

In a ongoing research project, OMIC (Oral Microbiota in children), a sub study was made toevaluate the use of fluoride, knowledge and attitude among parents of the 200 participatingchildren.The children have been followed since birth and their parents answered questionnaires at 3,18 months and 3 years in the main study. At the 5-year inspection in the main study theparents were asked to fill in another questionnaire for the fluoride sub study.In this study the parents were asked to answer questions about their own and their children’suse of fluoride products and their view of the risk with using these products. Questions abouttoothpaste and tooth brushing were also included.All parents used fluoridated toothpaste and a third also used complementary products. In thisgroup of children there was no difference in caries experience between the ones using nonfluorideagainst fluoride toothpaste. Children who brushed their teeth themselves had morecaries than children who got help from a grown-up.In conclusion the results from our material do not support our hypothesis which is that thelack of information regarding efficacy and safety of fluoride toothpaste over the years and theimpact from social media has resulted in lower use of fluoride toothpaste to children becauseof the impact from the parents.The survey need to be done in a more heterogeneous population for clearer results. It isimportant to remember that parental support is a huge factor to improve oral health inchildren.

DESEMPENHO DE DOIS ESPECTROFOTÔMETROS NA AVALIAÇÃO DAS ALTERAÇÕES DE COR DE LESÕES CARIOSAS NÃO CAVITADAS EM ESMALTE / PERFORMANCE OF TWO SPECTROPHOTOMETERS ON COLOR CHANGES EVALUATION OF NON-CAVITATED ENAMEL CARIES LESIONSVieira, Flávia Isaia 10 August 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this study was evaluate the performance of two spectrophotometer devices in assessing color changes of dental enamel after artificial caries induction (demineralization) and treatment with fluorides. The Easyshade spectrophotometer (VITA, Germany) and SP60 (Ex-Rite, USA) were used to measure the color changes of 30 bovine enamel blocks (n=10) in evaluation times: initial (sound enamel) (T0), demineralized enamel (T1 after pH cycling) and after treatment with fluoride agents 5 applications of fluoride gel (2% sodium fluoride group NaF and 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride APF group) (T2 to T6). The specimes in control group were kept in deionized water during the experimental time and received no treatment with fluoride. Obtained color change values (ΔE) as well as the values of each CIE L*a*b* dimensions were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey s post hoc test (α=0,05). The Pearson s correlation coefficient was used to measure a correlation study between the two devices. Results showed tha SP60 device was able on identifying and monitoring enamel color changes (p=0.000) and CIE L*a*b* dimension on evaluation times (p=0.000). On other hand, Easyshade showed no significant differences in main factors evaluation time (p=0.713) and treatment (p=0.684). Low correlation between the two devices was observed (r=0.25; p= 0. 001). Based on the obtained results, one can conclude that spectrophotometer SP60 was able to identify enamel color changes during enamel de-remineralization. Color changes in enamel were not assessed by Easyshade device. / O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de dois espectrofotômetros, na mensuração das alterações do esmalte dentário submetido a desmineralização e tratamento com fluoretos. Os espectrofotômetros Easyshade (VITA, Alemanha) SP60 (Ex- Rite, EUA) foram utilizados para mensurar as alterações ópticas de 30 blocos de esmalte bovino (n=10) nos momentos de avaliação inicial (esmalte hígido) (T0), esmalte desmineralizado (T1 após ciclagem de pH) e durante o tratamento das lesões de mancha branca com agentes fluoretados 5 aplicações tópicas de gel fluoretado ( fluoreto de sódio a 2% - grupo NaF e flúor fosfato acidulado 1,23% - grupo FFA) (T2 à T6). Os espécimes pertencentes ao grupo controle foram mantidos em água deionizada durante o período experimental e não receberam tratamento com fluoretos. Os dados obtidos referentes à alteração de cor (ΔE) bem como das dimensões CIE L*a*b* foram submetidos a analise de variância e teste de contraste de Tukey (α=0,05). O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson foi utilizado para medir a possível correlação entre os dois aparelhos do estudo. Os resultados do trabalho apontaram que o aparelho SP60 foi capaz de identificar e monitorar as diferenças de alteração de cor (ΔE) do esmalte nos diferentes momentos de avaliação (p= 0.000), assim como, foi capaz de informar variações em cada um dos parâmetros CIE L*a*b* (p=0.000). Por outro lado, o aparelho Easyshade, não apontou diferenças significantes entre os momentos de avaliação (p=0.713) e entre os grupos experimentais (p=0.684). Baixa correlação entre os dois dispositivos foi observada (r=0,25; p= 0,001). Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi concluído que o espectrofotômetro SP60 foi capaz de identificar essas alterações nos diferentes tempos de avaliação. No entanto, o aparelho Easyshade não foi capaz de avaliar alterações ópticas no esmalte, decorrentes da perda de minerais e do tratamento com agentes fluoretados.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In the recent years there has been a constant discussion between the others and leading researchers in health and the world's environment, which are the benefits (inhibition of caries and dental enamel remineralization) and harm (dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis, mostly) by ingestion of fluoride in drinking water. Thus, the objective of this study was to diagnose fluoride anomalies and sort outcrop zone waters of the Guarani Aquifer System, in cities in the Central Region of Rio Grande do Sul. Therefore, the specific objectives were defined: Firstly, recognize the municipalities located in the Central Depression, with occurrences of anomalies in fluoride concentrations in groundwater. This study was done through research on the Company's website for Research on Mineral Resources (CPRM), selecting some funding for field sampling; Identifying fluoride anomalies from the results of chemical analyzes of samples; Sort the waters sampled in Piper diagram and Stiff diagrams and apply statistical method of correlation to find possible correlations, especially between electrical conductivity and fluoride. There were performed in total, twenty collections in the cities of Dona Francisca, Faxinal do Soturno, Restinga Seca, Santa Maria and São João do Polêsine. Among the twenty samples, twelve of them pointed fluoride index greater than the Maximum Allowed by law. Eighteen samples were identified as moles. In the chemical classification, eight samples proved bicarbonate with sodium, seven had sodic chlorinated and five mixed sodium. The statistical processing pointed out that there is no significant correlation between conductivity and fluoride. It is concluded that there is need for further work on the subject. In addition, the water knowledge with fluoride anomalies in other municipalities is essential for public health problems to be controlled and/or prevented. / Nos últimos anos verifica-se uma constante discussão entre os diversos e principais pesquisadores em saúde e meio ambiente do mundo: os benefícios (inibição da cárie e remineralização do esmalte dentários) e os malefícios (fluorose dentária e fluorose óssea, principalmente) da ingestão do flúor em água de consumo humano. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi diagnosticar anomalias de fluoreto em captações por poços tubulares e classificar águas da zona de afloramento do Sistema Aquífero Guarani, em municípios da Depressão Central do Rio Grande do Sul. Para tanto, foram definidos os objetivos específicos: reconhecer, primeiramente, os municípios da Depressão Central, com ocorrências de anomalias nas concentrações de flúor nas águas subterrâneas através de pesquisa no sítio da Companhia de Pesquisas em Recursos Minerais (CPRM), selecionando algumas captações para amostragem em campo; Identificar anomalias de fluoreto a partir dos resultados das análises químicas realizadas nas amostras; Classificar as águas amostradas através de diagrama de Piper e diagramas de Stiff e Aplicar método estatístico de correlação para constatar possíveis correlações, sobretudo, entre a condutividade elétrica e fluoreto. Foram realizadas, ao todo, vinte coletas nos municípios de: Dona Francisca, Faxinal do Soturno, Restinga Seca, Santa Maria e São João do Polêsine. Das vinte amostras, doze apontaram concentração de fluoreto maior do que o Valor Máximo Permitido pela legislação vigente. Dezoito amostras foram identificadas, quanto a dureza, como moles. Na classificação química, oito amostras mostraram-se bicarbonatadas sódicas, sete apresentaram-se sódicas cloretadas e cinco, sódicas mistas. O processamento estatístico apontou que não há correlação significativa entre condutividade elétrica e flúor. Concluí-se que há necessidade de continuidade de trabalhos referentes à temática. Além disso, que o (re) conhecimento de águas com anomalias de fluoreto em outros municípios é imprescindível para que problemas de saúde pública sejam controlados e/ou evitados.
