Elasticity in three compositions with flute by Boris BlacherTaher, Cecilia 01 July 2009 (has links)
This thesis proposes a new concept of form for Boris Blacher's Divertimento for Woodwinds, Duet for Flute and Piano, and Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Viola, and Violoncello. In 1950, Blacher began to use systematically varying metric units to provide logic to the apparently arbitrary rhythm of modern music. This practice led the few scholars who have studied his compositions to concentrate on the mathematical organization of metrical units, underestimating other musical elements. This dissertation is based on the idea that it is not the mere disposition of meters, but mostly the interaction between them and other musical elements that makes the peculiar durational scheme audible, thus perceptually relevant. Following this, the technique of expansion and contraction that becomes evident in the organization of the meters is also present in the disposition of durations at other hierarchical levels and in the pitch structure. Furthermore, the mathematical metrical scheme is the foundation for a deeper universe of systematic organization. Blacher's techniques provide a unique sense of movement to his compositions, the aural effect of an "elastically developing music." In Duet and Quintet, this idea is also applied in simultaneity to the registral disposition of pitches and textural development, suggesting vertical elasticity. As a result, Blacher's late compositions suggest a replacement of the traditional concepts of form and texture with a new idea of constantly moving, elastic shape.
The methodological approach of this thesis is exclusively analytical and technical, with emphasis on durational and pitch organization, form, texture, and the interaction among these aspects. The individual and comparative analysis of the three compositions reveals a consistent conception of the musical space that emphasizes its bi-dimensional quality. In the Divertimento, the unitary conception of the vertical and horizontal construction is mainly reflected in the bi-dimensional treatment of interval classes that provides coherence to the motivic structure. In Duet and Quintet, this mere idea of consistent organization of the musical materials in the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the total space becomes a unique principle of formal definition, the elastic development of the musical content itself.

This study investigates the status of Historically Informed Performance Practice among the South African flute-playing fraternity. Consequently, grounds are established on which to claim a lack of the implementation of Historically Informed Performance Practice in South African flute pedagogy and playing. The main research question that underpins this study is: <ul> <li>Why is there a lack of integration of Historically Informed Performance Practice into the mainstream of current flute performance practice among South African flute pedagogues and players?</li></ul> This research question is addressed through three sub-questions: <ul> <li>Is there an awareness of Historically Informed Performance Practice in South Africa as outlined by performance and pedagogy internationally?</li> <li>How is Historically Informed Performance Practice incorporated into the South African flute examinations system? </li> <li>Does the knowledge of Historically Informed Performance Practice prepare one to be a balanced musician or flautist?</li> </ul> The findings that emerge from the investigation of the research questions are: <ul> <li>South African flute pedagogues fail to differentiate between Historically Informed Performance Practice and ‘authenticity’. This could be attributed to the fact that relatively little research and discourse into Historically Informed Performance Practice has been conducted by South African scholars and musicologists. </li> <li>While Historically Informed Performance Practice is thought to enhance students’ performances of Early Music, resulting in better-balanced musicians, it has not been significantly exploited by South African flute players.</li> <li>South African flute students are superficially aware of some elements of performance practice, but are generally not historically informed with regard to the performance of Early Music.</li> <li>There is no clear indication of Historically Informed Performance Practice being incorporated into the South African independent flute examination system.</li> <li>While there are numerous specialists in Early Music locally, flute pedagogues and players perceive them to be scarce, perhaps due to a lack of discernable demand for historically informed performances by South African audiences.</li> </ul> The research synthesises questionnaire and interview data from local flute pedagogues, Early Music specialists and both national and international flute students in an attempt to discover the reason for the lack of Historically Informed Performance Practice in South Africa. Additionally, a survey of websites detailing South African Early Music activity is performed using the Internet, in order to ascertain if the basis for a future in Historically Informed Performance Practice exists nationally. The Flute Professors of the Paris Conservatoire from Devienne to Taffanel, 1795-1908Ahmad, Patricia 08 1900 (has links)
Since its establishment (1795), the Paris Conservatoire has attracted top-ranking flutists who, through their playing, teaching, writings, and attitudes, (toward the Boehm flute, for example), have influenced flutists and composers throughout Europe. Through Paul Taffanel, who founded the Societe d'Instruments a Vent in 1876, standards of woodwind playing reached new heights. When Taffanel's students, Georges Laurent and Georges Barrere, emigrated to the United States, they influenced the style and development of flute-playing in this country. Through Barrere's famous student, William Kincaid, there arose what might be termed the American school. The intent of this paper is to place these flutists in perspective. The professors are discussed chronologically; information on the style, works, students, and influence of each man is included.

This submission investigates the interpretation and performance of selected solo and chamber works for flute by American composers Lowell Liebermann (b.1961) and Robert Beaser (b.1954). The exegesis presents a discussion of the interpretation and preparation of the included works from two differing perspectives. First, it examines the repertoire from the perspective of the composer, drawing on audio recordings of interviews and lessons conducted by the author in the United States of America. Second, it reviews the recitals from the perspective of the performer with emphasis on the preparation and performance of the selected repertoire. The discussion draws on two recitals by the author and associate artists that were recorded and presented in Elder Hall, The University of Adelaide on 11 December 2008 and 16 June 2009. The objective of this dissertation is to explore how collaborative partnerships between composers and performers can shape musical repertoire. Since composers do not work in isolation and they often compose with specific players in mind, the person they write for can influence their approach to a given piece. If they consult the performer, a working relationship might ensue in which the performer’s contribution to the music can range from the interpretation of the piece to its co-creation.
Numerous flute compositions in Hungary since the 1950s were created for specific performers and have therefore greatly benefited from this type of music-making. This study proposes a theoretical model of composer-performer collaborations that classifies these artistic partnerships into six types, according to the amount and kind of influence the performer has on the music.
Based on score analysis and interviews conducted with Hungarian performers and composers, the creative contributions made by flutists István Matuz, Zoltán Gyöngyössy, Gergely Ittzés, Gyula Csetényi, Bea Berényi, Ákos Dratsay and János Bálint are examined in the music of Miklós Kocsár, Iván Madarász, László Dubrovay, József Sári, Miklós Sugár, István Láng, László Tihanyi, István Szigeti, Máté Hollós and Péter Eötvös. In addition, pieces by flutist-composers István Matuz, Zoltán Gyöngyössy and Gergely Ittzés are also studied. The focus is directed to music for one to four flutes, flute with orchestra and flute with piano, as these are the types of pieces in which composer-performer partnerships are most apparent.
