A desintegração é um processo tempo-dependente que ocorre sob ação de desintegrantes e promove a fragmentação da forma farmacêutica em partículas passíveis de serem dissolvidas e absorvidas. É um parâmetro de qualidade extremamente importante, sendo influenciada por diversos fatores, incluindo o tipo de desintegrante utilizado e a força de compressão aplicada. Desintegrantes são compostos insolúveis que atuam por diferentes mecanismos e são excipientes essenciais para a obtenção de formas farmacêuticas sólidas. Para a maioria dos desintegrantes, a penetração de água na forma farmacêutica é um fator determinante para um bom desempenho, visto que resulta no intumescimento das partículas e no desenvolvimento da força que auxilia o processo de desintegração. A determinação experimental do processo de desintegração é realizada por meio de aparato específico, no entanto, não permite uma avaliação mais acurada dos mecanismos envolvidos no processo. Desse modo, foram introduzidos alguns métodos de análise que, associados aos métodos convencionais, permitem explorar outras características do processo e avaliar a eficiência de desintegrantes bem como a relação entre a desintegração e a força de compressão aplicada. O objetivo desse trabalho foi associar a Biosusceptometria AC com dispositivos para medir a força de desintegração e a quantidade de água absorvida e, assim, avaliar a influencia de três superdesintegrantes no processo de desintegração de comprimidos obtidos com cinco níveis de compressão distintos / Tablet dosage forms are used due to ease of production, low cost and stability. The release of the drug contained in the tablets occurs through disintegration process. Disintegration is a time-dependent process that occurs under the action of disintegrants that promotes fragmentation of the dosage form particles capable of being dissolved and absorbed. It is an extremely important quality parameter, being influenced by several factors, including the type of disintegrant used and the compression force applied. Disintegrants are insoluble compounds that act by different mechanisms and are essential excipient for achieving solid dosage form. For most disintegrants, water penetration in the pharmaceutical form is an important factor for a good performance, since it results in particles swelling and the development of force that aids the disintegration process. The experimental determination of the disintegration process is accomplished by means of specific apparatus, however, does not allow a more accurate assessment of the mechanisms involved. Thus we have introduced some analytical methods, associated with conventional methods, allowing exploring other features of the process and evaluating the effectiveness of disintegrants as well as the correspondence between disintegration and compression force applied. The objective was to associate AC Biosusceptometry with devices to measure the force of disintegration and the amount of water absorbed, and thus evaluate the influence of three superdisintegrant in the process of disintegration of tablets obtained with five different levels of compression

O uso da argumentação em salas de aula pode se tornar grande aliada na formação de jovens pensadores e críticos, que consigam utilizar seus pensamentos em favor próprio e em conjunto, que sejam capazes de discutir problemas e propor soluções, não apenas na escola, mas em seu dia a dia. Para favorecer a argumentação, foi utilizado um minicurso investigativo com o tema Forças intermoleculares. Nossa proposta de trabalho procurou investigar quais são as potencialidades do uso integrado desses referenciais teóricos e qual a contribuição de uma proposta de minicurso invesetigativo no desenvolvimento de habilidades de argumentação em alunos e futuros professores além de analisar a proposta investigativa utilizada. Os dados analisados foram divididos em três categorias, i) a proposta do minicurso investigativo com base na classificação de atividades de ensino proposta por Canal (2000), ii) a qualidade da argumentação com Osborne et al (2004) e iii) a atuação do professor na elaboração dos argumentos dos alunos com Mendonça e Justil (2009). Os resultados mostram que a atividade proposta favoreceu a argumetnação dos alunos e professores, possibilitando a abertura de espaços na sala de aula para que ocorra diálogo entre os alunos e os professores. Pode-se perceber o papel fundamental do professor na elaboração dos argumentos dos alunos, pois, se os mesmos não direcionarem as discussões, os argumentos podem ser mal elaborados ou mal explorados / In recent decades, the Teaching if Science has been searching for strategies that enhance the understanding of scientific content or, as indicated by Driver (1999), enculturation of Science (DRIVER, Capecchi and CARVALHO, MORTIMER, 2000) and the training of teachers ans students to be critical and reflective. The use of argumentation in the classroom can become a great ally in forming young thinkers and critics, who can use their own behalf and thoughts together; they can discuss problems and propose solutions, not just in shool but in their day by day. To facilitate the argument we used an investigate shor course with the theme Intermolecular Forces. Our proposal of work aimed to investigate what are the potential use of integrated theoretical and the contribution of a proposed short course in the development of investigate reasoning abilities in students and future teachers as well as used to analyze the research proposal. Data were divided into three categories, i) the proposed investigative mini course based on the classification of educational activities proposed by Canal (2000), ii) the quality of argumentation with Osborne et al (2004) and iii) the performance of teacher in preparing students with the arguments of Mendonça and Justi (2009). The results show that the proposed activity favored the argument of the students and teachers, enabling the opening of spaces in the classroom dialogue to occur between students and teachers. It can be noticed the teqacher's role in the development of students arguments, because if they do not guiding discussions arguments can be poorly designed or poorly explored

Women entrepreneurs in the UK armed forces

Literature on entrepreneurship has been criticised on several grounds including a strong bias to examine masculine traits, being deeply rooted in the private sector, limited to economics, conceptualised as a specialist skill pertinent only to non-public entities, overly positivist, single causal and with a tendency to downplay the relevance of both the social and human sciences. The relatively few studies of female entrepreneurs in the public sector have been criticised on the grounds of privileging structure over agency and for ignoring new research perspectives. The literature calls for the generation of alternative viewpoints on entrepreneurship and specifically towards those that pay greater attention to the level of the individual within an institutional setting and that embraces like interaction with multiple sociological variables. To generate research outside these biases, a dynamic relational model consisting of four interactive variables (structure, agency, networks and context) was developed and then used to guide a case study on women entrepreneurs within a male dominated institution - the United Kingdom’s (UK) Armed Forces. A critical realist research methodology was used. Interviews were conducted with a stratified sample of 52 female, uniformed officers drawn from all three services (Navy, Army, Airforce). The findings revealed how women use structure, agency, networks and context to create the necessary leverage to bring about entrepreneurial institutional change based on individual goal realisation strategies. The originality of this research is threefold. Firstly, it examines female entrepreneurs in a male dominated public sector institution. Secondly, it uses a critical realist research methodology. Finally, the research develops a dynamic relational model that has wider utility. The overall net result of this research approach is to provide a richer understanding of the complex, multi-causal nature of public sector entrepreneurship that has the potential for far broader application. / © Cranfield University 2015

Accountability of armed opposition groups in Somalia

The purpose of IHL is to protect civilians and provide obligations that parties to the conflict are to adhere to. These obligations in case of a non-international armed conflict emanate from Common Article 3, Additional Protocol II and customary international humanitarian law. The reason for the imposition of these obligations on the parties to the conflict is for the need to protect the civilian population against the effects of hostilities which mostly are women and children. As the conflict in Somalia has gone on for too long, IHL plays an important role in protecting civilians. As the Geneva Conventions regulate armed conflicts together with its Additional Protocols they set out the requirements for the treatment of those not taking part in hostilities. In direct contravention of the Geneva Conventions by the parties to the conflict, the persons not taking part in hostilities have been the victims of attacks by armed groups. Even though armed groups have obligations, breaches have continued to occur resulting in impunity and perpetrators of violence have gone unpunished and there is need to close the accountability gap in respect of holding armed groups accountable in Somalia. The aim of this research is to assess how armed groups in Somalia can be held accountable for the atrocities they have committed. In an attempt to close the gap the researcher discusses the obligations that armed groups have, and when these obligations are breached many result in criminal accountability in respect of war crimes. It is also stated in the research that a State has an obligation to prosecute those in breach of IHL obligations. For prosecution to be possible in Somalia there is need for the Federal government of Somalia to adopt new legislation to enforce the justice system in the attempt to hold armed groups accountable and where possible to also utilise available courts as it is difficult and expensive to establish a tribunal. To end impunity armed groups are to be held accountable.

On the approach to local equilibrium and the stability of the uniform density stationary states of a Van der Waals gas

Some equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of a gas of hard spheres with a long range attractive potential are investigated by considering the properties of an equation, proposed by deSobrino (1967), for a one-particle distribution function for the gas model considered. The solutions of this equation obey an H-theorem indicating that our gas model approaches local equilibrium. Equilibrium solutions of the kinetic equation are studied; they satisfy an equation for the density η(r) for which space dependent solutions exist and correspond to a mixture of gas and liquid phases. The kinetic equation is next linearized and the linearized equation is applied to the study of the stability of the uniform density stationary states of a Van der Waals gas. A brief asymptotic analysis of sound propagation in dilute gases is presented in view of introducing an approximation of the linearized Boltzmann collision integral due to Gross and Jackson (1959). To first order, the dispersion in the speed of sound at low frequencies is the same as the Burnett and Wang Chang-Uhlenbeck values while the absorption of sound is slightly less than the Burnett value and slightly greater than the Wang Chang-Uhlenbeck value; all three are in good agreement with experiment. Finally, using the method developed in the previous section, an approximation for the linearized Enskog collision integral is obtained; a dispersion relation is derived and used to show that the uniform density states which correspond to local minima of the free energy and traditionally called metastable, are in fact stable against sufficiently small perturbations. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

The relationship between masticatory stress and prognathism : a finite element and morphometric study

Mechanical forces, such as mastication, influence morphological characteristics of the cranium. With varying degrees of prognathism found within and between populations, the ability to accommodate masticatory stress may vary, and this will have profound effects on final craniofacial form. The purpose of this research is a two-fold examination of mid-facial prognathism in modern African males. First, an osteometric and morphological examination of specific areas of the cranium involved in the masticatory apparatus was performed, and its relationship with prognathism assessed. Second, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to interpret the distribution of stress during mastication and the contribution of prognathism to this stress distribution. Two diametrically opposed facial forms (prognathic and orthognathic) were modelled to observe variation in displacement, pressure, and Von Mises stress patterns using linear elastic homogenous isotropic material properties. Boundary conditions simulating muscle contraction of the masseter, medial pterygoid, and temporalis were attributed to the models. A vertical compressive bite-force was applied at the left central incisor and the first molar, respectively. With the use of FEA, differences in the pattern and magnitude of Von Mises stress were noted under simulated mastication. The prognathic model consistently experienced more stress for a molar and incisal bite-force than the orthognathic model. More specifically, the prognathic model accommodated for larger areas of Von Mises stress in the regions of the zygomatic arch, nasal aperture, margins of the orbits, and in the inter-orbital area. As individual muscle forces were modeled, the temporalis and medial pterygoid caused the greatest difference in the stress at the articular eminence between the working and balancing sides. These muscles and their forces should be further investigated to understand their role in temporomandibular joint disorders. Several cranial dimensions were shown to increase or decrease with prognathism. The relationship between the gnathic index and facial parameters were statistically significant for nine cranial and seven dental dimensions. The orthognathic group showed a larger inter-orbital dimension with a subsequent decrease in stress in that area. The upper facial index, maxillary molar crown area and the dental arcade shape demonstrated statistically significant shape changes associated with the degree of prognathism. Morphological analysis did not show a significant distribution in browridge expression and robusticity as a means to accommodate masticatory stress. Stress distribution patterns were correlated with osteometric data and showed a significant difference in inter-orbital breadth between the two groups. Mechanical action of mastication may influence prognathic more than orthognatic facial forms. An orthognatic facial form is biomechanically more efficient under masticatory stress. Mechanical loading during mastication greatly influences the morphological patterns of the facial skeleton.
