Gouverner ou choisir : la IVe République et l'immigration / Governing or choosing : the Fourth Republic and Immigration

Guedj, Jérémy 04 November 2015 (has links)
Immigration, a major phenomenon in French contemporary history, has not always been massive, as the case of the Fourth Republic shows. Several studies on immigration broached this period, but none focused specifically on it. This dissertation thesis aims at filling this gap: its purpose is to analyze this period of French immigration globally. After depicting the characteristics of immigration at that time, the thesis deals first with State policy. It adopts thereafter a different point of view and analyzes public opinion’s attitudes towards migrants. Finally, it focuses on the migrants themselves, and looks particularly at how national policies and attitudes influenced their integration. The central issue consists in assessing whether the Fourth Republic marked a break with the tendency of former immigration history, or whether it perpetuated the ancient line. The dissertation puts this period into perspective, by analyzing the legacy of structures, agents and ideas inherited from the interwar period and Vichy France. It is therefore situated at the crossroad between history of migration and of ideas, social, cultural and economic history, as well as historical demography.

Jesus as means and locus of worship in the Fourth Gospel

Troost-Cramer, Kathleen 19 May 2016 (has links)
This dissertation argues that the Gospel of John was written (at least in part) as a response to the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in 70 CE and the resulting questioning that would have centered on the location of Jewish worship in that temple’s absence. Along these lines, the Fourth Gospel presents the person of Jesus as the locus of worship, both before and after the resurrection event. The risen Jesus abides with his faithful as the dwelling of the divine Presence/Glory, in the same way that the Presence/Glory had dwelt in the midst of Israel in the wilderness tabernacle during the Exodus. Hence, John presents those who embrace the Jesus-temple as “Israel.” The presentation of Jesus as worship locus relies entirely upon the portrayal of Jesus as sacrifice, which has strong parallels to Akedah traditions found in some rabbinic texts and in Philo of Alexandria, among others. Among the ramifications of such a view is the translation of the term Ἰουδαῖοι, typically translated into English as “Jews.” This thesis argues that the translation of Ἰουδαῖοι is overwhelmingly dependent upon the Fourth Gospel’s theme of Jesus as locus of worship, which depends upon the portrayal of Jesus as sacrifice. Because John’s use of Ἰουδαῖοι is centered on the problem of worship location, it should be translated as “Judeans” in nearly every instance: the Ἰουδαῖοι are those who do not have a temple, while Ἰσραήλ is comprised of those who have the Jesus-temple as their worship space.

Cardoso, Renata Carrero January 2017 (has links)
The proposals for redevelopment of desindustrialized areas through the promotion and development of the so-called creative economy activities are currently highlighted in the discussions on urban planning and public policies. To the creative economy sectors, the capacity to act as vectors of economic and socio-spatial development has been attributed through the establishment of new spatialities in the territory. In the convergence between the new economy’s taxonomy and the dynamics of capitalist production of urban space, the redeveloped territory acquires a value that is enhanced by symbolic meanings attributed to it, operated from discursive expressions articulated by its narrativity. In this sense, this study sought to analyze the narrative of the press in order to understand, from the elements of composition of the narratives, the communication strategies that contributes to the establishment of a creative spatiality and to the conformation of new values and social practices, as well as for the demarcation for the course of history. The results of the research demonstrate that the prescription of the creative spatiality of the IV District of Porto Alegre|RS can be understood as a mechanism for (re) production of space and reinsertion of territories in the dynamics of the real state market. The analyzed press’ narrative has played a relevant role in by operation not only as to induce the instauration of the physical space, but also of the social space, fomenting both its consumption and its production.

Effects of Sex, Third Grade Reading Achievement and Motivation as Predictors of Fourth Grade Reading Achievement of Hispanic Students: A Path Analysis

del Rio, Vivian M. 15 November 2013 (has links)
This study explored the topic of motivation for intermediate students combining both an objective criterion measure (i.e., standardized test scores) and the self-report of students on self-concept and value of reading. The purpose of this study was to examine how third grade reading achievement correlated with the motivation of fourth grade boys and girls, and, in turn, how motivation related to fourth grade reading achievement. The participants were fourth grade students (n=207) attending two public, elementary schools in Miami-Dade County who were of primarily Hispanic origin or descent. Data were collected using the Reading Survey portion of the Motivation to Read Profile (1996) which measures self-concept and value of reading in order to measure motivation and the Third and Fourth Grade Reading Florida Comprehensive Assessment Tests 2.0 (FCAT 2.0) to assess achievement. First, a one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine whether motivation differed significantly between fourth grade boys and girls. Second, a path analysis was used to determine whether motivation mediated or moderated the association between FCAT 2.0 third and fourth grade scores. Results of the ANOVA indicated that motivation, as measured by the Motivation to Read Profile did not differ significantly by sex. Results from the path analysis indicated that the model was significant and that third grade FCAT 2.0 scores accounted for a significant amount of the variance in fourth grade FCAT 2.0 scores once motivation was entered. Results of the study demonstrated that motivation partially mediates, but does not moderate the relationship between FCAT 2.0 third and fourth grade scores. In conclusion, it can be determined that past student achievement for fourth grade students plays a role in current student achievement when motivation is also considered. It is therefore important in order to improve the quality of fourth grade student’s current performance to take into account a student’s motivation and past achievement. An effort must be made to address students’ motivational needs whether through school wide programs or at the classroom level in addition or in conjunction with cognition. Future research on the effect of self-concept in reading achievement is recommended.

The Effect of an Expressed Level of Aspiration in Determining Performance on a Subsequent Task

Hafner, Bruce W. 08 1900 (has links)
There have been few investigations employing the level of aspiration as a motivational independent variable. The problem of the present study was to investigate the effect of an expressed level of aspiration on a subsequent level of performance on a cancellation task and to relate this effect to socio-economic classifications.
