Eritrea, a new commercial hub for international trade? : A case study of the Eritrean Free Zone AuthorityFumba, Mireille Elin, Zegay, Amanuel January 2010 (has links)
<p>Many people have not even heard about Eritrea and even less about the free zones that is establishing there. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding about the free zones that exits in Eritrea today. The port of Massawa is the one that the focus is upon in our thesis. The reason for the implementation of the free zones is the re-<em>construction</em> of the economy. The country is restoring the economy due to the fact that they had been in war with Ethiopia. Free zones are an established concept that already exists in other country’s for example Djibouti, Dubai, Sudan and so on. The free zones in Eritrea will have to show its forefeet to be competitive.</p><p>We want to increase the understanding of the free zones in Eritrea and even increase the understanding for how the strategy and the project are being handled. We will use models and theories to explain how the implementation is being done in the Eritrean free zones. The models that we are going to use, will illustrate how the management can be done. The methodological chapter will describe the approached used during the entire thesis. By collecting various kinds of data, the understanding has increased. We have analyzed all data, concluded the report and offered further recommendations.</p>

Car-free zones are a planning strategy that strives for a sustainable urban environment, focusing on reducing car use in people's everyday lives. The purpose of this study has been to investigate what preconditions that have been taken into account when defining car-free zones, to find out how car-free zones are to be delimited in Swedish cities. The aim of the study was to identify which preconditions that are important when designing a car-free zone. Then the preconditions were applied in Gävle to exemplify where a car-free zone is possible and optimal for the municipality of Gävle. The study was carried out with two methods to determine the conditions for the delimitations of car-free zones. First, a qualitative content analysis of four existing and planned car-free zones was carried out through an inductive approach to planning documents, reports, scientific articles, books and organizations' websites. The existing and planned car-free zones were the pedestrian street Ströget, Helsinki, Oslo and the district Vauban. Thereafter four semi-structured interviews were conducted. The interviewees were traffic planners from Gävle Municipality, Sundsvall Municipality, Umeå Municipality and Eskilstuna Municipality. Preconditions emerging from the content analysis and interviews were shown in themed tables to compare the preconditions emerged from the two methods. A comparison between the content analysis and the interviews identified nine preconditions. These nine preconditions are density, trade, public buildings, green spaces, meeting places, cycle paths, public transport, walk paths and multistory car parks. The preconditions were applied to an orthophoto of Gävle in ArcMap 10.6 to illustrate where a car-free zone is possible and most optimal to implement in Gävle city. The application of the preconditions resulted in an area that centered in central Gävle

Africa's contribution to the humanitarian approach of nuclear weapons disarmament : Pelindaba TreatyMhone, Peggy S January 2016 (has links)
Magister Administrationis - MAdmin / This thesis attempts to assess the role Africa has played to further the humanitarian approach to nuclear weapons disarmament. Particular focus is on the Pelindaba Treaty and whether it has been able to strengthen the call for disarmament based on the humanitarian approach. The findings of this research are that the Pelindaba treaty did contribute indirectly to the strengthening of the humanitarian initiative of nuclear weapons disarmament because the Treaty serves as an important contribution towards the achievement of a world without nuclear weapons, which is the key objective of the humanitarian initiative of nuclear weapons disarmament. In addition, the Pelindaba Treaty has also contributed in strengthening the call for overall nuclear disarmament. This is the case as 53 states signed the treaty to rid the continent of nuclear weapons and any direct threats associated with those weapons. In so doing, it has contributed greatly to disarmament efforts. A nuclear weapons free zone across the continent is a
powerful statement about the desire for a nuclear free world. It has provided African states with a foundation for engaging in the humanitarian initiative, as it led to some standardisation of statements/positions. Also, since the inception of the humanitarian approach to disarmament, African states have contributed greatly to the initiative. In terms of numbers, in the three conferences on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons use that have taken place between 2013 and 2014 (in Oslo, Nayarit and Vienna), it was witnessed that the number of participating African states increased from 34 in the first meeting to 45 in the last meeting. This alone indicates the determination and commitment by these African states to the initiative. Conclusively, this research determined that the Pelindaba Treaty and efforts of African states in general have contributed towards strengthening the call for not only the humanitarian initiative to nuclear weapons disarmament but also to disarmament overall.

Micromechanical study of PFZ in aluminum alloysShariati, Hossein January 2016 (has links)
There are a number of experiments showing that the ductility of aluminum alloys decreases during age-hardening heat treatment. Observing the grains of age-hardened aluminum alloys at the micron scale, one can notice that there are precipitate-free zones (PFZs) along the grain boundaries. PFZ has yield stress three times lower than the grain interior (bulk) due to absence of alloying elements. As a result, PFZ is suspected to be the reason for ductility reduction of alloys. On the other hand, a number of experiments performed on specimens with micron-scale dimensions have shown that the plastic deformation of crystalline materials is size-dependent. These micron-scale dimensions which can influence the mechanical behavior, such as yield stress or hardening, are not taken into account in the conventional plasticity theory, therefore another theory has been developed. That theory is Strain Gradient Plasticity (SGP). The specific SGP theory used here is a so called ‘higherorder theory’ in the sense that higher order stresses as well as additional boundary conditions are included in the theory. SGP theory also includes length scale parameters in order to be dimensionally consistent. On a recent study conducted by Fourmeau et al. (Fourmeau, 2015), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to display the geometrical properties and the chemical composition of PFZ in the AA7075-T651 aluminum alloy. It is observed that the width of PFZ is about 20 to 40 nm. In the present thesis, the properties for PFZ and bulk material provided by that study are used for a micromechanical finite element model of a microstructure including the bulk, PFZ and the grain boundary (GB). A uniaxial loading condition is applied to the representative volume element (RVE) and SGP theory is hired in order to capture the plastic strain fields as well as the stress triaxiality in PFZ and bulk region. Moreover a damage criterion is employed and studied for models with PFZ and without PFZ to understand the role of PFZ in reduction of the ductility of aluminum alloys. It is found that the damage parameter is much higher in the presence of PFZ. Finally, the void growth is studied by adding voids at critical locations to the model.

Economic Impacts Of Free Zones In Turkey: A Questionnaire Study Conducted With Firms Operating In Turkish Free Zones Regarding The Perception Of The Firms On The Success Of Free ZonesKavlak, Mehmet Emin 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In Turkey, the trade regime has been liberalized to some extent after Resolutions of 24 January 1980, and Turkey started to implement export-led trade strategies. As a part of these policy instruments, the Free Zones Law was published in the Official Gazette in 1985. Following various amendments in the Law, objectives of free zones have been defined as &ldquo / promoting export-oriented investment and production, accelerating the entry of foreign investment and technology, directing enterprises to export and improving international trade&rdquo / .
Within this context, the purpose of this study is to explore the economic impacts of free zones and analyze the free zone firms&rsquo / perceptions on the success of free zones by assessing to what extent the establishment objectives of the free zones in Turkey have been realized.
