Orbital plasma welding of small bore tubesTazedakis, Athanassios S. January 1997 (has links)
This work was primarily motivated by the industrial need for control of problems associated with the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) of small bore titanium and austenitic stainless steel tubes. These include: pore creation and entrapment in the weld zone, and variability of the fusion zone geometry. The primary aim of this study was the development of a low current orbital plasma welding capability using a structured approach which could lead to defect minimisation. The methodology should also have the potential to be used in a number of different conditions, extending the use of plasma welding in both melt-in and keyhole modes for the orbital welding of small bore tubes. The project originally involved the modification of a totally enclosed orbital GTAW welding head for low current welding operations. It was established that for the current range required for small bore and small to medium thickness tubes, the use of a solid copper torch was sufficient to provide the required heat absorption. A stable arc was produced even for very low current values (down to 7A) while arc voltages were within the operating range of a standard GTA welding power source. Procedural (i.e. off line) control was adopted for identification and optimisation of welding parameters. Since no procedure was available for the proposed welds it was necessary to generate the parameters required for the production of consistent weld profiles. Simultaneously, an expert system has been developed for the determination of optimum process parameters based on empirical models, developed using statistical techniques. Parameter combinations were selected based on physical as well as statistical relevance, providing a measure of confidence when predicting the required weld bead output characteristics. The approach also indicates the influence of the major input parameters on weld bead geometry and defect formation, such as undercut. Two quality acceptance criteria were employed during this investigation, weld bead dimensional accuracy, and the type and seriousness of defects present (penetration / burn-through, porosity and undercut). Off line programming was utilised to control heat build up and to ensure welds were obtained with the desired geometry and minimal defect levels. The end result was the development of a prototype system for low current orbital plasma welding (in both melt-in and keyhole mode) of small bore tubes in a totally enclosed head. Tolerant procedures for low current orbital melt-in and particularly keyhole welding have been generated and a systematic methodology for the prediction and optimisation of welding procedures based on predetermined criteria has been developed.

Micro-alloying and surface texturing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by embedding nanoparticles using gas tungsten arcweldingCooke, Kavian O., Shar, Muhammad A., Hussain, S. 25 November 2020 (has links)
Yes / Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is known for both its excellent mechanical properties and its low surface hardness. This study explores a two-step process for depositing a hard nanocrystalline coating onto the surface of the Ti-alloy, followed by surface melting, which embeds hard nanoparticles into a thin surface layer of the alloy. The treated surface layer was studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Vicker's micro-hardness testing. The results of the study show that the surface of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy can be successfully hardened by embedding nanosized Al2O3 particles into the surface using gas tungsten arc welding to melt the surface of the material. Surface melting the Ti-6Al-4V alloy with a 50A welding current produced the maximum microhardness of 701 HV0.2kg. The micro-hardness of the treated surface layer decreased with the increasing size of the nanoparticles, while the roughness of the surface increased with the increasing welding current. The heat input into the surface during the surface melting process resulted in the formation of various intermetallic compounds capable of further increasing the hardness of the Ti-6Al-4V surface.

The erosion behaviour of pure tungsten electrodes in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)Singh, Gurjit, Schuster, Henning, Füssel, Uwe 04 March 2020 (has links)
A cross-time study has been made on the erosion behaviour of Gas-Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) for pure tungsten electrode. Its behaviour during arcing was analyzed and compared from the points of view of metallurgical changes in electrode due to long-term operation. Metallographic studies of the electrodes indicate that the crack formation and grain growth during periodic temperature variations. These observations are discussed theoretically based on the experimental results and the thermal expansion parameters of Tungsten.

WELD PENETRATION IDENTIFICATION BASED ON CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORKLi, Chao 01 January 2019 (has links)
Weld joint penetration determination is the key factor in welding process control area. Not only has it directly affected the weld joint mechanical properties, like fatigue for example. It also requires much of human intelligence, which either complex modeling or rich of welding experience. Therefore, weld penetration status identification has become the obstacle for intelligent welding system. In this dissertation, an innovative method has been proposed to detect the weld joint penetration status using machine-learning algorithms.
A GTAW welding system is firstly built. Project a dot-structured laser pattern onto the weld pool surface during welding process, the reflected laser pattern is captured which contains all the information about the penetration status. An experienced welder is able to determine weld penetration status just based on the reflected laser pattern. However, it is difficult to characterize the images to extract key information that used to determine penetration status. To overcome the challenges in finding right features and accurately processing images to extract key features using conventional machine vision algorithms, we propose using convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically extract key features and determine penetration status.
Data-label pairs are needed to train a CNN. Therefore, an image acquiring system is designed to collect reflected laser pattern and the image of work-piece backside. Data augmentation is performed to enlarge the training data size, which resulting in 270,000 training data, 45,000 validation data and 45,000 test data. A six-layer convolutional neural network (CNN) has been designed and trained using a revised mini-batch gradient descent optimizer. Final test accuracy is 90.7% and using a voting mechanism based on three consequent images further improve the prediction accuracy.
