“Mighty maiden with a mission”: Navigating the Proto-Feminism of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Princess IdaMcKay, Meaghan 07 February 2019 (has links)
Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas continue to enjoy popularity worldwide, in both amateur and professional settings. Their 1884 collaboration Princess Ida¸ however, remains a contested work regarding its representation of women and feminism. In this thesis, I argue that Gilbert and Sullivan were attempting to satirize men’s reactions to feminism, rather than feminism itself. This thesis situates Princess Ida within its Victorian social context to determine to what extent a proto-feminist interpretation of the operetta is valid. Princess Ida is based on, and a parody of, Tennyson’s The Princess (1847). Tracing the chronology of Ida’s story from its beginnings in Tennyson’s poem through to Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta clarifies what Gilbert chose to satirize in his libretto. Victorian masculinity emerges as a central theme in Princess Ida, and the complexities of Gilbert and Sullivan’s representations of men in their operetta informs my discussion of proto-feminism. This thesis historically contextualizes Princess Ida and examines the operetta through the lens of feminist critiques of Western art music.

Towards a philosophy of imagination : a study of Gilbert Durand and Paul RicoeurJoy, Mavourneen M. January 1981 (has links)
A satisfactory definition of the imagination has proved elusive in Western philosophy. Two contemporary French thinkers, Gilbert Durand and Paul Ricoeur, are concerned with establishing a fundamental philosophy of imagination. For Durand the imagination is the source of symbolic mediations that are both therapeutic and theophanic. His theory is grounded in a Platonist-esoteric tradition which he supports by a philosophy of the imaginal (coined and articulated by Henry Corbin, a French Islamicist). Ricoeur, in contrast, sees the imagination as a creative cognitive mediator in a dialectic model of knowledge. Within a critical framework the imagination functions at the limits of experience and expression as a catalyst provoking new insights and ways of being. Both theories support a philosophy that rehabilitates the imagination from its former denigrated and suspect categorizations, though Ricoeur's programme is more relevant to contemporary philosophical issues.

Down-Converter Gilbert-Cell Mixer for WiMax Applications using 0.15μm GaAs HEMT TechnologyAlmohaimeed, Abdullah Mohammed H 08 January 2014 (has links)
The Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, or WiMax, is a wireless communication technique based on IEEE 802.16 standards. Its advantage of sending high data rates over long distances, while using a single base station to cover a large area, has made this technique a flexible and reliable solution for public wireless networks. WiMax has two main types of networks: Fixed and Mobile.
The most popular transceiver used in WiMax applications is the “Direct-Conversion
Architecture” due to its high level of integration and less component requirements,
which leads to reduced power dissipation.
In Direct Conversion Architecture, the mixer is a key block in the transceiver chain. Depending on design specifications and constraints, different types of mixers may be considered.
However, the most appropriate down converter mixer for WiMax applications is the Gilbert-cell mixer. This thesis will then explore the design of a down converter Gilbert-Cell Mixer within the realm of Fixed WiMax technology. This design was achieved in the commercial circuit simulator Advanced Design System (ADS) using the 0.15mm InGaAs pHEMT technology process provided by Win Semiconductor Crop.
