Realism, not relativism : a critique of Gilbert HarmanRawlings, Adam D.H. 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis will critique Gilbert Harman's moral relativism. Harman argues for a form of
moral relativism he calls a "conventionalist" account of morality. He supports this by defending
a view of explanations, a view of simplicity, and a view of the moral "ought." However, the
anthropological literature contains strong evidence against his drawing of this relativist
conclusion — and in support of a contrary one. According to anthropologists, there is a universal
belief in the moral wrongness of incest, the "incest taboo": its existence suggests that Harman
may have better supported a form of moral realism than the relativism he endorses. Thus, at the
very least, Harman's argument does not prove that relativism is true; more strongly, it may prove
that relativism is false, and realism true.

Previous issue date: 2000-03 / Esta dissertação pretende contribuir com os estudos desenvolvidos na área educacional no Estado de Pernambuco. Contando com um embasamento antropológico, e especificamente, com a Antropologia do Imaginário de Gilbert Durand, e ainda, utilizando como método ã "arquitetura sensível" (elaborada pela Prof. Dra. Danielle Perin Rocha Pitta) e o AT-9 (arquétipo teste de
nove elementos criado por Yves Durand), buscou-se conhecer e compreender a visão de escola, bem como a apropriação do seu espaço, junto a um grupo de estudantes pichadores, de uma escola pública localizada na Região Metropolitana do Recife.
A Pesquisa permitia perceber que o espaço, para o grupo, torna-se um espaço/cemitério, ou melhor, cemitério/escola, pátio sendo o lugar mais freqüentado pelo grupo, e que as pichações podem ser compreendidas, substancialmente como forma de protesto contra a hierarquia escolar e um futuro sem perspectivas. Ogrupo demonstra sentimentos de revolta rejeição, e descrença no devir, no futuro oferecido pelo projeto escolar, e constrói assim, cotidianamente, com escola na escola relações conflituosas, de transgressão, porém complementares, que permitem um desenvolvimento de uma dinâmica sócio-cultural-específica e a existência e a convivência de duas forças opostas, antagônicas que perduram em uma "harmonia conflitual" necessária à vida.
Delineam-se desta forma, perspectivas para a elaboração de novos elementos em termos de educação, que venham integrar o Novo Espírito Pedagógico.

Modernising tradition : the architectural thought of Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960)Lewis, David Frazer January 2014 (has links)
The architect Giles Gilbert Scott (1880 – 1960) designed the red telephone kiosk, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, Battersea Power Station, and the House of Commons Chamber amongst other major projects. Yet this thesis is the first scholarly study of his work as a theorist and practitioner. Scott’s ideas provide a window into how architects, critics, and clients of his generation thought about architecture, helping us to understand the design of the interwar period in a way that the backward projection of our own intellectual frameworks cannot do. Often relegated to a minor place in architectural histories, in his time Scott was one of the best known architects in the world, author of numerous iconic structures and widely influential. By returning him to a prominent place in the narrative, the thesis reveals a world in which so-called traditionalists and modernists were concerned with the exploration of common themes – the social role of the architect, the psychological effect of buildings, the nature of construction and tradition. The first two chapters explore Scott’s ideas about history and architectural context by investigating his work at Oxford and Cambridge. The third chapter focuses on his church work as a way of understanding his ideas about tradition and the role of psychology in architecture. The fourth chapter explores the ways that he gave meaning to his designs using rhetoric and planning. Set against the backdrop of the postwar decline of his reputation, the final chapter examines the legacy of his architectural theories. By returning Scott to the historical narrative, our understanding of interwar architecture is greatly broadened. And by expanding our knowledge of the least understood era of twentieth century architecture, we come to better understand how modern architecture as we know it was forged.
