Tissue Engineering Approaches for Studying the Effect of Biochemical and Physiological Stimuli on Cell BehaviorJimenez Vergara, Andrea 2012 August 1900 (has links)
Tissue engineering (TE) approaches have emerged as an alternative to traditional tissue and organ replacements. The aim of this work was to contribute to the understanding of the effects of cell-material and endothelial cell (EC) paracrine signaling on cell responses using poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels as a material platform. Three TE applications were explored. First, the effect of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) identity was evaluated for vocal fold restoration. Second, the influence of GAG identity was explored and a novel approach for stable endothelialization was developed for vascular graft applications. Finally, EC paracrine signaling in the presence of cyclic stretch, and hydrophobicity and inorganic content were studied for osteogenic applications.
In terms of vocal fold restoration, it was found that vocal fold fibroblast (VFF) phenotype and extracellular matrix (ECM) production were impacted by GAG identity. VFF phenotype was preserved in long-term cultured hydrogels containing high molecular weight hyaluronan (HAHMW). Furthermore, collagen I deposition, fibronectin production and smooth muscle alpha-actin (SM-alpha-actin) expression in PEG-HA, PEG-chondroitin sulfate C and PEG- heparan sulfate (HS) gels suggest that CSC and HS may be undesirable for vocal fold implants.
Regarding vascular graft applications, the impact of GAG identity on smooth muscle cell (SMC) foam cell formation was explored. Results support the increasing body of literature that suggests a critical role for dermatan sulfate (DS)-bearing proteoglycans in early atherosclerosis. In addition, an approach for fabricating bi-layered tissue engineering vascular grafts (TEVGs) with stable endothelialization was validated using PEGDA as an intercellular "cementing" agent between adjacent endothelial cells (ECs).
Finally, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation toward osteogenic like cells was evaluated. ECM and cell phenotypic data showed that elevated scaffold inorganic content and hydrophobicity were indeed correlated with increased osteogenic differentiation. Moreover, the present results suggest that EC paracrine signaling enhances MSC osteogenesis in the presence of cyclic stretch.

Orientador: Rogerio Saad Hossne / Resumo: Introdução: Doença de Crohn (DC) é uma doença inflamatória crônica, transmural, persistente ou recidivante. Localiza-se, principalmente na porção distal do intestino delgado (íleo) e proximal do cólon (ceco), entretanto pode acometer qualquer segmento do trato gastrintestinal. A Enterotomografia (Entero-TC) é uma técnica de alta resolução espacial que permite avaliar cada segmento intestinal sem sobreposição de alças e avalia, principalmente, a atividade da doença. Objetivo: Comparar a qualidade e aceitação de dois preparos orais em Entero-Tc nos pacientes com Doença de Crohn. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal. Os pacientes foram randomizados em dois grupos. Preparo A: 78,75g de Polietilenoglicol em 1000mL de água. Preparo B: 78,75g de Polietilenoglicol em 2000mL de água. Os preparos foram administrados via oral em um tempo de 45min a intervalos regulares de 15 minutos. Posteriormente, os pacientes foram submetidos ao exame Entero-Tc. Foi aplicado questionário de aceitação e tolerância do preparo após exame. Os itens avaliados foram facilidade de ingestão, sabor, presença de efeito colateral e se o paciente repetiria o exame. A qualidade do exame foi avaliada pelo radiologista, por meio do preenchimento dos segmentos intestinais e distensão luminal. Análise Estatística: descritiva, testes de associação (p<0,05). Magister Scientiae - MSc / With an increase in the amount of harmful carbon emissions in the atmosphere as well as a decrease in the availability of fossil fuels, there is a relatively high demand for alternate energy devices. Solar cells have become an alternative option in aid of leading the way for clean energy; however these devices are relatively expensive and have an efficiency that is relatively low in comparison to that of fossil fuelled energy. As a result the cost of the solar cell needs to be reduced by reducing the amount of silicon used in order to compete with fossil fuelled devices; however this decrease would lead to a decrease in efficiency. In recent years silver nanoparticles have been extensively researched as a result of its extraordinary optical, electrical, catalytic, magnetic and antibacterial properties. As a result of these properties, the nanoparticles may be applied to many research areas such as photovoltaics, catalysis and medical fields. The optical properties of silver nanoparticles may thus be exploited in order to increase absorption and in turn the efficiency of the solar cell devices. This study focuses on the optimization of the polyol synthesis to possibly obtain uniformly dispersed silver nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles would then be incorporated onto amorphous silicon thin films, deposited by hot wire chemical vapour deposition, by spraying a suspension of the silver nanoparticles onto the thin films. The silver nanoparticles were viii characterized by Ultra Violet Visible Spectroscopy (UV-VIS), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, and Thermogravimetric Analysis. The thin films with the incorporated silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-VIS, and High Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy. It was shown that silver nanoparticles with various morphologies were produced by the polyol synthesis and may be used to enhance light trapping of thin film
photovoltaic devices.

Ethylene glycol intoxication, suicidal as well as accidental, belongs to serious, immediately life-threatening poisonings, which can however be cured even in the most severe cases (provided early recognition and correct treatment), including the restoration of renal function to the original state. Ethylene glycol is most notably present in anti-freeze cooling liquids for vehicles (such as Fridex). Consumption of 100-150 ml of such a solution is considered a lethal dose in humans. follows Oral ingestion is followed by rapid absorption. Metabolic decomposition takes place predominantly in the liver by way of alcohol dehydrogenase, to glycoaldehyde, which is further metabolised to glycolic acid and oxalic acid. The clinical aspect is dominated by acute renal failure which is caused by acute tubular necrosis. Toxicological examination including an assessment of ethylene glycol levels in both blood and urine, with prognostic relevance, is indispensable to diagnostics of the poisoning as well as from the standpoint of differential diagnostics. Therapeutic measures include gastric lavage within one hour of ingestion and administration of activated charcoal. Administration of ethanol and fomepizole, compounds that bind alcohol dehydrogenase and thus prevent the conversion of ethylene glycol to its toxic metabolites, is considered valid causal treatment with simultaneous early institution of hemodialysis (even in cases of hitherto intact renal function). As fomepizole is currently not available in the Czech republic, ethanol remains the only antidote. Therapy further includes correction of metabolic acidosis by way of bicarbonates, and intravenous application of thiamine and pyridoxine. Therapy of such a grave condition must entail infirmary care provided by professional nurses as a necessary complement. The nurse serves their function in securing the patient's airways, connecting the patient to mechanical ventilation, monitoring physiological functions, assistance with invasive entry, as well as conducting sample extractions, assuring proper hygiene, the prevention of decubitus ulcers etc. It has been the aim of an extensive effort during my analysis of this topic to collate an up-to-date summary of practical knowledge on ethylene glycol intoxication, as well as subsequent therapeutic options for such patients, based on collected information and available source material. This final thesis, entitled "Approach and Options for Nurses in Therapy of Ethylene Glycol-intoxicated Patients" has been created relying on a body of purely theoretical Czech and foreign sources. To attain awareness of the current state of medical sciences described on the following pages, many professional and scientific publications, books as well as journals and websites of registered professional societies had to be studied. The aim of a detailed inspection of such an extensive body of data has been to provide relevant findings based on the facts determined. The accumulated information is further specified in particular sections. The first deal with intoxication, elimination and first aid in the pre-hospitalization phase from a broader perspective. Without these elementary notes the thesis as a whole would lack in conclusiveness. From this section the thesis fluidly continues with ethylene glycol intoxication itself, its treatment and all the way to the role of the nurse including particular therapeutic measures. These sections contain specific recommendations issuing from news and cutting-edge research on ethylene glycol poisonings.

Vitrificação de embriões Mus domesticus domesticus contidos em volumes diferentes de 9,0 m de etileno glicol. / Vitrification of mus domesticus domesticus embryos exposed to differents volumes of 9.0 m ethylene glycol solutionAssaf, Sabrina Silveira January 2003 (has links)
Os experimentos tiveram como objetivo determinar a taxa de eclosão dos embriões vitrificados em volumes diferentes de 9,0 M de etileno glicol. Simultaneamente, testou-se dois procedimentos de estocagem dos fios de teflon, denominados caixa de aço inoxidável e globete/raque. No experimento I, os 881 embriões coletados foram distribuídos em 4 tratamentos: tratamento 1 (T1= controle): 307 embriões foram cultivados in vitro em meio PBSm, acrescido de 0,4% de BSA; tratamento 2 (T2): 292 embriões foram expostos à solução de glicerol 10% acrescida de 0,4% de BSA, envasados em palhetas de 0,25 mL e submetidos ao congelamento pelo método rápido em Biocool; tratamento 3 (T3): 138 embriões foram expostos durante 2 minutos à solução de desidratação (10% de EG + 6% BSA em PBSm) e então transferidos para a solução de vitrificação (50% de EG + 6% de BSA em PBSm), onde permaneceram por 30 segundos e foram colocados em volume de 1 μL no interior de um fio de teflon, medindo 0,4 mm de diâmetro, 2,0 cm de comprimento e 0,05 mm de espessura. Os fios foram acondicionados em uma caixa de aço inoxidável para serem armazenados em nitrogênio líquido; tratamento 4 (T4): 144 embriões foram expostos à solução de desidratação (10% de EG + 6% BSA em PBSm) e após 2 minutos, foram transferidos para a solução de vitrificação (50% de EG + 6% BSA em PBSm), onde permaneceram por 30 segundos, sendo após transferidos para um volume de 1 μL no interior do fio de teflon. Os fios de teflon foram estocados em globetes unidos às raques e mantidos em nitrogênio líquido. Após o aquecimento, os embriões foram cultivados em PBSm suplementado com 0,4% de BSA. As taxas de eclosão embrionária observadas foram: T1=76,29% (245/307); T2=41,05% (117/292); T3=37,98% (54/138) e T4=26,78% (37/144). No segundo experimento, 747 embriões foram distribuídos em 3 tratamentos: tratamento 1 (T1= controle): 80 embriões foram cultivados in vitro em meio KSOM acrescido de 0,4% de BSA; tratamento 2 (T2): 334 embriões expostos em solução de glicerol 10% acrescida de 0,4% de BSA, foram envasados em palhetas de 0,25 mL e submetidos ao congelamento pelo método rápido em Biocool; tratamento 3 (T3): 333 blastocistos foram expostos durante 2 minutos à solução de desidratação (10% de EG + 0,4% BSA em PBSm) e então transferidos para tubos eppendorf de 2,0 mL em contato com a solução de vitrificação (50% de EG + 0,4% BSA em PBSm). Após o cultivo in vitro, as taxas de eclosão embrionária observadas nos 3 tratamentos foram respectivamente: 88,75% (71/80), 40,44% (141/334) e 19,70% (66/333). Baseado nesses resultados conclui-se que embriões Mus domesticus domesticus submetidos à técnica de vitrificação após exposição à solução de 9,0 M de etileno glicol e envase em fios de teflon assegurou índices satisfatórios de sobrevivência embrionária. As taxas de sobrevivência dos embriões Mus domesticus domesticus foi independente do procedimento de estocagem em botijão de nitrogênio líquido. A vitrificação em solução de 9,0 M de etileno glicol com envase em tubos eppendorf não foi eficiente para promover altas taxas de sobrevivência embrionária, mas proporcionou segurança biológica aos embriões, durante o armazenamento. / This work was performed with Mus domesticus domesticus embryos to verify the in vitro viability of vitrified embryos using differents volumes of ethylene glycol–based solution. The experiment I consisted of four treatments. The 881 collected embryos were arranged as follows: treatment 1(control): 307 fresh embryos were cultured in vitro in PBSm + 0.4% BSA without being exposed to either dehydration or cryoprotectants agents; treatment 2: 292 embryos were loaded into 0.25 mL french straws containing 10% glycerol + 0.4% BSA in PBSm and after 10 minutes the straws were submitted to the rapid-freezing procedure (Biocool®, controlled freezer); treatment 3:138 embryos were exposed during 2 minutes to a dehydration solution (10% ethylene glycol + 6% BSA in PBSm) and then transferred to the vitrification solution (50% ethylene glycol + 6% BSA in PBSm) in teflon wire with 0.4 mm diameter, 2 cm length and 0.05 mm thickness containing the drop of 1μL volume, and placed into stainless steel box for the storage in LN2; treatment 4:144 embryos were exposed to a dehydration solution (10% ethylene glycol + 6% BSA in PBSm) and after 2 minutes were transferred to the teflon wire, that was previousily loaded with 1μL of the vitrification solution (50% ethylene glycol + 6% BSA in PBSm). Finally, the teflon wires were placed into plastic globets attached to aluminum canes and maintained in LN2. After thawing, the embryos were serially washed in PBSm, and then cultured in PBSm supplemented with 0.4% BSA. The hatched blastocyst rates observed in the treatments were: T1=76.29% (245/307); T2=41.05% (117/292); T3=37.98% (54/138) and T4=26.78% (37/144). In the second experiment, 747 embryos were arranged as follows: treatment 1(control): consisted of 80 fresh embryos cultured in vitro in KSOM medium + 0.4% BSA without being exposed to either dehydration or cryoprotectants agents; treatment 2: 334 embryos were loaded into 0.25 mL french straws containing 10% glycerol + 0.4% BSA in PBSm and after 10 minutes the straws were submitted to the rapid-freezing procedure (Biocool®, controlled freezer); treatment 3: 333 embryos were exposed during 2 minutes to a dehydration solution (10% ethylene glycol + 0.4% BSA in PBSm) and then transferred to the eppendorf tubes loaded with the vitrification solution (50% ethylene glycol + 0.4% BSA in PBSm). After in vitro culture, the hatched blastocysts rates observed were: T1=88.75% (71/80); T2=40.44% (141/334) and T3=19.70% (66/333). Based on these results it is concluded that the embryos of Mus domesticus domesticus submitted to vitrification procedure after being exposed to 9.0 M of ethylene glycol – based solution and loaded in teflon wires were efficient to promote satisfactory embryo survival rates. The survival rate of Mus domesticus domesticus embryos was independent of the LN2 storage procedure. The vitrification procedure after being exposed to 9.0 M of ethylene glycol – based solution and loaded in eppendorf tubes were not efficient to promote high embryo survival rate, but to warrant the embryo’s biologically security during storage in liquid nitrogen.

Previous issue date: 2012 / CAPES / A conversão catalítica do glicerol em insumos químicos de maior valor agregado é
desejável para valorizar a cadeia de produção do biodiesel. O glicerol é obtido
principalmente como co-produto do biodiesel, com rendimento de 10% em massa.
Uma das vias mais promissoras na valorização do glicerol está na hidrogenólise do
glicerol a propilenoglicol (1,2-PD), que é empregado como agente anti-congelante,
na produção de polímeros, na indústria de alimentos e cosméticos. Muitos estudos
têm relatado a hidrogenólise em fase líquida, que requer altas pressões de
hidrogênio e demanda altos custos operacionais. Recentes estudos têm relatado a
hidrogenólise do glicerol a 1,2-PDO em fase vapor, utilizando principalmente
catalisadores a base de cobre. O principal catalisador empregado na hidrogenólise
do glicerol tanto na fase liquida como vapor é a cromita de cobre, CuCr2O4. Neste
trabalho, a atividade catalítica da cromita de cobre foi avaliada em fase vapor,
estudando três fatores: a estruturação da cromita de cobre por diferentes
temperaturas de calcinação (500-800°C); mudanças es truturais provocadas por
diferentes métodos de síntese (Combustão e Pechini); e a modificação da estrutura
da cromita pela introdução do alumínio em substituição do cromo. Todos os
catalisadores foram caracterizados por DRX, FTIR, EDX, BET, TPR-H2 e área
metálica do cobre. A hidrogenólise do glicerol em fase vapor se mostrou promissora
e os resultados obtidos indicaram que a fase cromita de cobre propicia uma maior
estabilidade para a fase ativa o cobre metálico. O aumento da área metálica do
cobre é influenciado diretamente pelo método de síntese, maximizando a
hidrogenólise. A introdução do alumínio provocou o aumento da seletividade ao
propanodiol pela melhora nas propriedades texturais. / Salvador

Sistemas de alimentação de cordeiros em pastagem tropical / Lambs feeding systems in tropical pastureFarias, Mariana de Souza January 2016 (has links)
O presente estudo foi realizado em duas etapas com os seguintes objetivos: (i) avaliar os efeitos da suplementação com leguminosa tropical em comparação ao concentrado em gramínea tropical na ingestão de nutrientes por cordeiros; (ii) avaliar a inclusão de leguminosa tropical em pastagem de gramínea sobre o consumo de nutrientes por cordeiros recebendo polietileno glicol 4000. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso e no segundo experimento em parcela subdividida. No primeiro estudo (capítulo III), 72 cordeiros foram alocados em 12 piquetes (0,1 ha cada) de capim Aruana (Panicum maximum cv. IZ-5) e submetidos aos tratamentos por 90 dias: 1) S0,0 – sem suplementação; 2) S1,5 - suplementação com concentrado a 1,5% de PV; 3) S2,5 -suplementação com concentrado a 2,5% PV, 4) SFG - suplementação com pastejo controlado em 0,1 ha de feijão Guandu (Cajanus cajan cv. Anão) por três horas/dia. No segundo experimento (capítulo IV), 54 cordeiros foram alocados em nove piquetes (0,2 ha cada) submetidos aos tratamentos por 84 dias: 1) Aruana – somente capim Aruana; 2) AFG - consórcio de feijão Guandu e capim Aruana, em faixa, 3) Guandu - somente feijão Guandu, cada tratamento foi subdividido em parcelas com e sem PEG (polietileno glicol 4000). No experimento 1, as variáveis de comportamento ingestivo, consumo e digestibilidade de nutrientes foram influenciadas pelos tratamentos (P < 0,05), tendo os cordeiros do grupo S2,5 apresentado melhor ingestão de nutrientes e o grupo SFG consumo intermediário. Em geral, o grupo SFG apresentou resultados semelhantes ao S1,5. No segundo experimento, as variáveis de comportamento ingestivo não foram influenciadas pelos tratamentos e pelo uso do PEG (P > 0,05). Houve interação entre os sistemas de alimentação e uso de PEG para a ingestão de nutrientes e digestibilidade (P > 0,05), com os melhores resultados para os grupos sem PEG (P < 0,05). Em geral, os animais que não receberam PEG e que foi incluído Guandu na dieta, apresentaram aumento no consumo de nutrientes. Assim, o feijão Guandu pode substituir o concentrado em nível de até 1,5% do PV como suplemento para o capim Aruana. A inclusão da leguminosa tropical com presença de taninos condensados favorece o consumo de nutrientes por cordeiros criados em pastagem tropical. / This study was performed in two stages with the following objectives: (i) to evaluate the effects of topical legume supplementation compared with the concentrate in tropical grass in the intake of nutrients by lambs; (ii) to evaluate the inclusion of tropical legume in grass pasture on intake of nutrients for lambs receiving polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG). A randomized block design was use in the first experiment and split plot design was use in the second experiment. In the first study (Chapter III), 72 lambs were divided into 12 paddocks (0.1 ha each) of Aruana grass de (Panicum maximum cv. IZ-5) and subjected to treatments for 90 days: 1) S0,0 - only Aruana grass; 2) S1.5 - supplementation with concentrated to 1.5% of lamb BW; 3) S2.5 - supplementation with concentrated to 2.5% of lamb BW; 4) SFG – supplementation with controlled grazing on 0.1 ha of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan cv. Anão) for three h / d. In the second study (Chapter IV), 54 lambs were divided into nine paddocks (0.2 ha each) and subjected to treatments for 84 days: 1) Aruana – only Aruana grass; 2) AFG - consortium with Aruana grass and pigeon pea; 3) Guandu – only pigeon pea, where each treatment was divided into plots with or without PEG (polyethylene glycol 4000). In the experiment 1, the ingestive behavior variables, intake and digestibility of nutrients were affect by treatments (P < 0.05) with the lambs of the group S2.5 presented better intake of nutrients and the group SFG intake intermediate. In general, the SFG group showed similar results to S1.5. In the second experiment, the ingestive behavior variables were not affected by the treatments and the use of PEG (P>0.05). There was interaction between the feeding systems and use of PEG for intake of nutrients and digestibility (P < 0.05), with the best result for the treatments without PEG (P < 0.05). In general, animals that did not receive PEG and that included pigeon pea in the diet, showed an increase in the intake of nutirents. Thus, pigeon pea can substitute the concentrate at a level of 1,5% PV as a supplement for the Aruana grass. The inclusion of the tropical legume with presence of condensed tannin favors the intake of nutrients by lambs raised in tropical pasture.

STUDY OF EXTENDED LIFE COOLANT WITH SUSPENDED CARBON NANOTUBESOverturf, Logan Matthew 01 August 2011 (has links)
Utilizing an experimental facility which was prepared to conduct performance tests on heat exchangers; experiments were completed in an attempt to see verifiable improvements in overall heat transfer coefficient in engine coolant with nanoparticles suspended at different weight percentages. The different fluids tested were: base ELC (Extended Life Coolant), ELC with 0.002 wt% CNT (Carbon Nanotubes), ELC with 0.02 wt% CNT, ELC with 0.02 wt% MWNT's (Multiwalled Nanotubes) and water. The volume percents range from 0.00164 volume% to 0.0164 volume% which seemed quite small, but according to Caterpillar representatives, were the best concentration. These fluids were tested at standard flowrates which this type of heat exchanger would be used in as well as a higher air flowrate and lower coolant flowrates in an attempt to gather more verifiable data. Results were obtained regarding the change in heat transfer ability of engine coolant with suspended nanoparticles. For this system under these specific conditions, there was verifiably no increase in UA as nanoparticles were added to the coolant. The benefits of adding nanoparticles to engine coolant have potential to be great, but the cost of nanoparticles and difficulty keeping them suspended may outweigh any benefits obtainable in this type of set up.

Permeabilities and CO2/N2 selectivity of two membranes were examined and each showed remarkable CO2/N2 selectivity. CO2 permeability of the [PSM-MIM][Cl] membrane is better than that of the [PSM-MEIM][Cl] membrane, which is due to the steric hindrance of the methoxyethyl group. The syntheses of PEG/alkyl-based imidazolium/pyridinium ionic liquids (IL) were studied. PEG-based ILs were demonstrated to have better H2S solubilities than the alkyl-based ILs. H2S solubilities of the imidazolium ILs and pyridinium ILs were compared. The anion effects on H2S solubilities have been investigated, while the temperature effects on H2S solubilities will need to be studied in the near future.

Obtenção de nanopartículas de óxido de ferro por coprecipitação, sua estabilização com surfactantes e caracterização quanto à morfologia, cristalinidade e comportamento magnéticoPanta, Priscila Chaves January 2013 (has links)
Este trabalho investiga a obtenção de nanopartículas (NP) de óxido de ferro por coprecipitação, sua estabilização com surfactantes e caracterização quanto à morfologia e comportamento magnético. Atualmente, as NP estão sendo amplamente utilizadas para aplicações biomédicas, tais como contraste em imagens médicas e sistema de distribuição de drogas. Na síntese das NP foram investigados, parâmetros como a temperatura da reação, o pH da solução e a velocidade de agitação. O estudo da estabilidade comparou dois diferentes surfactantes: o ácido oleico (AO) e o polietileno glicol (PEG). As NP obtidas foram caracterizadas por difração de raios X (DRX), e quanto à sua morfologia por microscopia eletrônica por varredura (MEV) e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET), a qual também proporcionou uma distribuição de tamanho de partículas, com variação entre 5 nm e 10,23 nm. A interação entre o óxido de ferro e seus revestimentos foi caracterizada por espectrocopia no infravermelho (FTIR) e espectrocopia Raman. O comportamento magnético das NP foi caracterizado por magnetometria de gradiente de força alternada (AGFM) e espectroscopia Mössbauer. Os resultados revelaram que as NP de óxido de ferro são tipicamente constituídas por magnetita ( ) revestida com AO e PEG e com um tamanho médio de cristalito entre 4,6 e 19,2 nm, calculado através da equação de Scherrer. O AGFM mostrou que as propriedades magnéticas das partículas foram mais eficientes para as NP com revestimento, do que com as NP sem revestimento, e o valor de magnetização de saturação (M) para a revestida com PEG foi maior quando comparado com a revestida com AO. A espectroscopia Mössbauer foi utilizada para confirmação do óxido de ferro como , para estimar tamanho de partícula quando os espectros são medidos a baixa temperatura e para análise do comportamento superparamagnético das partículas. / This work investigates the obtained nanoparticles (NP) iron oxide by coprecipitation stabilization with surfactants and characterize the morphology and magnetic behavior. Currently, the NP are being widely used for biomedical applications such as contrast in medical imaging and drug delivery system. In the synthesis of NP were investigated parameters such as the reaction temperature, the pH and stirring speed. The stability study compared two different surfactants: oleic acid (OA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The NP were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and morphologically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which also provided a distribution of particle size, ranging from 5 nm and 10.23 nm. The interaction between the iron oxide and their coatings was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The magnetic behavior of NP was characterized by magnetometry alternating gradient force (AGFM) and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results show that the NP iron oxide are typically comprised of magnetite ( ) coated with PEG and AO and a crystallite size between 4.6 and 19.2 nm calculated by the Scherrer equation. The AGFM showed that the magnetic properties of the particles were more efficient for the NP uncoated than to NP coated, and the value of saturation magnetization (M) to coated with PEG was higher when compared to coated AO. Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to confirm the iron oxide as , to estimate the size of particle where the spectra are measured at low temperature and to analyze the behavior of superparamagnetic particles.
