This project explores the possibilities and processes of metaphorization in images of poetic-musical structures. The aim was to build visual metaphors for three Lieder by Franz Schubert which were composed about poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "Ganymed", "Wandrers Nachtlied", and "Meeres Stille". The method used was the formal and literary analysis of the poems for the establishment of metaphorical relationships between them and the Lieder, and with them to produce photographic essays that translate them visually. The resulting essays, displayed in the body of this study, confirm the considered hypothesis, that visual artwork built on such analysis is solidly linked to the poems and Lieder on which they were based / Mestrado / Artes Visuais / Mestre em Artes

[en] BEYOND THE REMINISCENCES OF THE PAST: SCIENCE AND HISTORY IN THE CONFORMATION OF JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE S AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE (1749- 1832) / [pt] PARA ALÉM DAS REMINISCÊNCIAS DO PASSADO: CIÊNCIA E HISTÓRIA NA CONFORMAÇÃO DA PERSPECTIVA AUTOBIOGRÁFICA DE JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE (1749-1832)

04 May 2021 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims at an approximation between the scientific production and the autobiographical writing of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). In order to work on this objective, an analysis of the essay The Metamorphosis of Plants (Die Metamorphose der Pflanzen) and his best-known autobiography, From my life: poetry and truth (Aus Meinem Leben, Dichtung und Wahrheit) is developed. First, from the retrieval of texts in which the writer recalls central concepts developed in that essay about the process of plant growth, first published in 1790, it is discussed to what extent the recurrent commitment to an access to the past represented the opportunity of revisiting, explaining, corroborating and perfecting some of these concepts, above all, the one of metamorphosis. Sharing the argument that the recollection, in Goethe, acts over the past experience in a profitable, productive way, the analysis is, then, redirected to his autobiographical writing. After an initial examination of the status of the genre, drawing attention to its discursive malleability, both the similarities and specificities of the Goethian autobiographical text are highlighted. Thus, by using the articulation of a series of concepts mobilized by the writer, it becomes possible to emphasize the singular way in which Goethe redimensioned his existence, in the later act of writing, making it possible to associate particular conceptions of science and history in conformation of his autobiographical perspective.

The morphology of Goethe's botanical work

Hahn, Andre M. 16 April 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the morphology of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) through several lenses. The first explores Goethe's morphology as he applied it in his botanical work and supplies an explanation of what Goethe referred to as archetypal phenomena and the archetypal plant. The scope of exploration then broadens to include how Goethe's morphology related to contemporary intellectual trends, in particular Linnaean taxonomy and Kantian Idealism. These contexts serve to situate the development of Goethe's own thinking from his initial formulations of morphology to later variations. The second half of the thesis focuses on contemporary applications of Goethe's ideas in morphology. Natural aesthetics serves as a natural extension. Modern theories of natural aesthetics seek out different justifications for aesthetic experiences arising from engagement with the natural world and this thesis offers Goethe's morphology as an additional possibility. The final chapter looks at The Nature Institute and how it has adopted Goethe's methods and applied them to modern genetics while expanding its scope to include cultural and ethical contexts. Through its presentation, this thesis intends that Goethe's morphology can be applied beyond it usual biological subject matter, including itself. / Graduation date: 2012

This master thesis tries to relate three concepts – landscape, time and memory – in Goethe’s Italian Journey. Our first goal is to uncover the phenomenological time of sight, body and travel in landscape descriptions, thus conceiving memory in its primary form, namely as retention. In order to do this, we use as basis the 1905 Husserlian Lessons on time and his mereology in the Logical Investigations, both of which were later developed by Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of perception and by Paul Ricoeur’s works on narrative and memory, and we relate them to the testimonial form of landscape experience on the Journey. Our analysis aims at demonstrating the different rhythms of experience and its description and also the impossibility of separating the elements of a landscape "picture" and the moments of its perception. In addition, as second goal, we investigate Goethe's belonging to the ancient tradition of mnemonics, in which memory is conceived, on the one hand, as an impression on the soul and, on the other, as an interior space or palace. At this stage of our research, landscape is considered from the point of view of its sublimity, that is, the pathetic force through which it inscribes itself in the memory text. The classical sources, which serve as guide, are the Platonic dialogues, two Aristotelian works and some Latin rhetoric treatises, as well as some expositions on the sublime, from the Longinus through Burke to Goethe’s contemporary and personal friend Friedrich Schiller. Our thesis, whose aim is to establish contact between landscape and individual recollection, appears to be a new contribution in the field of studies on Goethe, considering that Italian and classical landscape in the Journey is traditionally referred to historical time and cultural memory

Goethe v psychoanalytické literatuře / Goethe in psychonalytic literature

Křížová, Ivana January 2014 (has links)
The theoretical thesis, which aims to find and compare different conceptions and interpretation of the life of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The interest of this thesis is centered on the interpretation of Goethe's relationship with his sister. Interpretation of the relationship of Goethe and his sister is based on two approaches, the psychoanalytic and historical approach. Psychoanalytic approach is represented by Sigmund Freud and Kurt Eissler, who offer interpretations of some aspects of the relationship of Goethe with his sister. Historical approach is represented by Richard Friedenthal and Astrid Seele. They submit biographical context of the poets life and also point to his relationship with his sister. On the basis of these sources are data analyzed within psychoanalytic theory. To explain Goethe's relationship with his sister is thinking about the form of their incestuous sibling relationship or oedipus complex.

Feeling same-sex desire: law, science, and belonging in German-speaking central Europe, 1750-1945

Conn, Matthew B. 01 August 2014 (has links)
My dissertation explains how the scientific study of sexuality became laden with emotions and the unforeseen results of this process. It begins with a scholarly tradition, forged during the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, which privileged sentimental articulations of feelings. This tradition helped inspire the late nineteenth-century foundation of sexology, or sexual science. Sexologists, as their discipline developed alongside the modern rational bureaucratic nation-state, maintained attention to emotive expressions. Sexologists also helped shape the interpretation and enforcement of laws against same-sex acts. While they built authority, however, sexologists lacked consensus. During the first third of the twentieth century, sexologists helped compile defendants' detailed sexual histories, replete with affective articulations of sexual desires, which led to calamitous consequences under National Socialism. Nazi technocrats utilized these same sexual histories, offered by same-sex attracted persons describing their feelings and actions before 1933, to prosecute them after a 1935 legal revision, which expanded the law's reach from specific acts to general expressions of feelings. My dissertation provides a genealogy of sexual research and the unexpected uses of its findings. It also revises the biography of sexology as an interdisciplinary field, braided with a history of emotions, tracing its previously underappreciated origins, tumultuous apex, and contested legacy.

Ottilie: Expression of the Ideal of Romantic Childlikeness in Goethe's Wahlverwandtschaften

Steele, Melodie Joy 11 July 1996 (has links)
The interpretation of Ottilie in Goethe's Wahlverwandtschaften stems from an understanding of romantic motifs, which find their most systematic expression in her childlike character. Ottilie embodies the romantic idealization of childhood as a means of withdrawal from the enlightened world, echoing the Romantics' rejection of the disenchanted Age of Enlightenment. Through her portrayal of innocent childlikeness, her adolescent conflict with the rational world, and her final rejection of enlightenment, Ottilie maintains her childlike purity, expressing the romantic ideal of childhood. Ottilie's childlike emotional disposition puts her in conflict with the enlightened world of adults and academia. In an attempt to maintain her childlike innocence, she separates herself from the present world and establishes ties to the medieval past through monastic duties and catholic sympathies. However, Ottilie's attempt to remain separate is futile due to her enlightened surroundings. Her journey toward self-awareness begins as a result of her love for Eduard, whose sexual thoughts of Ottilie launch her into a state of adolescence, against which she unconsciously struggles. Continual contact with the enlightened world weakens Ottilie's efforts to maintain ties to her childlike state. In her weakened condition she is unable to resist Eduard's continual amorous pursuits and openly displays her affection for him with a kiss. Her inner turmoil, resulting from her deliberate indiscretion causes the accidental drowning of Charlotte's and Eduard's baby Otto, which illuminates the iniquitous nature of her love for Eduard. She makes the decision to reject full enlightenment and transcends her human frailty by becoming saint-like. Through renunciation, which results in her sacrificial death, she spurns enlightenment and returns to a state of everlasting purity. As the portrayal of the romantic ideal of a maintained childhood innocence, Ottilie seems to be a vehicle to express either Goethe's commendation of condemnation of Romanticism. For the romantic, Ottilie's life and death are a triumph, for she succeeds in passing from this world, having proceeded from innocent child to saint into everlasting life. For the non-romantic, Ottilie's death is a tragedy, for she never reaches true enlightenment and never develops to her full potential.
