Estudo da Existência da Fase de Kosterlitz-Thouless no Estado Fundamental de Rotores Quânticos / Study Existence Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase State Elementary Quantum Rotors

Oscar Bolina Junior 18 December 1997 (has links)
We investigate the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thoules phase in the ground state of a one-dimensional array of quantum rotators. We prove that this model does not exhibit a first-order phase transition since a McBryan-Spencer bound holds for it. We obtain the partition function of the rotators in the Lie-Trotter, sine-Gordon, and charge representations. In this latter representation, we give a new proof of the upper bound polynomial decay on the external charges correlation function of a dipole gas with hardcore.

Inégalités de type Trudinger-Moser et applications / Trudinger-Moser type inequalities and applications

Zghal, Mohamed Khalil 06 February 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on some Trudinger-Moser type inequalities and their applications to the study of Sobolev embeddings they induce into the Orlicz spaces, and the investigation of nonlinear partial differential equations with exponential growth. The work presented here includes three parts. The first part is devoted to the description of the lack of compactness of the 4D Sobolev embedding into the Orlicz space in the radialframework. The aim of the second part is twofold. Firstly, we characterize the lack of compactness of the 2D Sobolev embedding into the different classes of Orlicz spaces. Secondly, we undertakethe study of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with exponential growth, where the Orlicz norm plays a crucial role. In particular, issues of global existence, scattering and qualitativestudy are investigated. In the third part, we establish sharp Adams-type inequalities invoking Hardy inequalities, then we give a description of the lack of compactness of the Sobolev embeddings they induce

Aspects of Non-Perturbative Renormalization

Nandori, Istvan 08 October 2002 (has links)
The goal of this Thesis is to give a presentation of some key issues regarding the non-perturbative renormalization of the periodic scalar field theories. As an example of the non-perturbative methods, we use the differential renormalization group approach, particularly the Wegner-Houghton and the Polchinski renormalization group equations, in order to investigate the renormalization of a one-component periodic scalar field theory. The Wegner-Houghton equation provides a resummation of the loop-expansion, and the Polchinski equation is based on the resummation of the perturbation series. Therefore, these equations are exact in the sense that they contain all quantum corrections. In the framework of these renormalization group equations, field theories with periodic self interaction can be considered without violating the essential symmetry of the model: the periodicity. Both methods - the Wegner-Houghton and the Polchinski approaches - are inspired by Wilson's blocking construction in momentum space: the Wegner-Houghton method uses a sharp momentum cut-off and thus cannot be applied directly to non-constant fields (contradicts with the "derivative expansion"); the Polchinski method is based on a smooth cut-off and thus gives rise naturally to a "derivative expansion" for varying fields. However, the shape of the cut-off function (the "scheme") is not fixed a priori within Polchinski's ansatz. In this thesis, we compare the Wegner--Houghton and the Polchinski equation; we demonstrate the consistency of both methods for near-constant fields in the linearized level and obtain constraints on the regulator function that enters into Polchinski's equation. Analytic and numerical results are presented which illustrate the renormalization group flow for both methods. We also briefly discuss the relation of the momentum-space methods to real-space renormalization group approaches. For the two-dimensional Coulomb gas (which is investigated by a real-space renormalization group method using the dilute-gas approximation), we provide a systematic method for obtaining higher-order corrections to the dilute gas result.

Campos espinoriais ELKO /

Rogério, Rodolfo José Bueno. January 2014 (has links)
Thus, in this work, we provide all the details of an unexpected theoretical discovery of a matter particle spin 1/2 endowed with mass dimension 1. These spinors are the so called ELKO, which comes from the German acronym Eigenspinores des Ladungskonjugationsoperators, based on a complete set of a dual helicity eigenspinors of the charge conjugation operator. ELKO belongs to a subgroup of the full Lorentz group. Therefore, the law of transformation between its components is not given by the parity symmetry, and thus it does not satisfies the Dirac equation. It appears, intrinsically in the spin sums a Lorentz symmetry breaking term, then it will be better analysed within the Very Special Relativity, which is a subgroup of the Lorentz group, whose algebra leaves the spin sums invariant or covariant under transformations. Since the ELKO propagator is the same of Klein-Gordon propagator apart from a term, than the associated lagrangian is the scalar field one, for this reason ELKO is endowed with mass dimension 1 / Mestre

THE APPLICATION OF EDWIN GORDON'S EMPIRICAL MODEL OF LEARNING SEQUENCE TO TEACHING THE RECORDER.

MCDONALD, JUNE CLARKSON. January 1987 (has links)
A study was conducted with third-grade children in a university laboratory school to determine the relative effectiveness of a method for teaching recorder in which the sequential objectives are logically ordered by Edwin Gordon's empirical model of learning sequence and a traditional method which stresses note reading. The criteria used for comparison were change in the level of developmental music aptitude and performance achievement on the recorder. A review of the literature supported Edwin Gordon's theory of developmental music aptitude which proposes that until about age nine, environmental factors can affect the level of music aptitude, and, at about age nine, music aptitude stabilizes. The review of the literature also supported the use of singing activities with instrumental instruction, and the application of verbal association systems to tonal and rhythmic patterns as pedagogical techniques. Treatment for the control group involved a teaching-learning procedure in which individual fingerings, pitches, and rhythm symbols were presented in isolation and assembled in playing songs from notation. The method used with the experimental group involved a teaching-learning sequence in which children first learned to sing the song by rote. In learning to play the song on the recorder, each melodic and rhythmic pattern was isolated and initially sung or chanted. A verbal association system was then associated with the tonal and rhythmic pattern. The notation representing the pattern was introduced after extensive aural and verbal association experience, and after learning several songs. Primary sources of data included: pretest/posttest using Gordon's PMMA to measure developmental music aptitude change, and a rating scale test to measure recorder performance achievement. Results of the PMMA supported the alternative hypotheses that the experimental group had significantly higher mean composite and rhythmic increases than the control group. The mean increase in the tonal scores was greater for the experimental group, but not significantly higher at the .05 level. Results of the investigator-designed performance achievement tests supported the alternative hypotheses that the experimental method of teaching recorder was more effective in all dimensions--melodic, rhythmic, executive skills, and composite--than the traditional method.

Homogeneous Canonical Formalism and Relativistic Wave Equations

Jackson, Albert A. 01 1900 (has links)
This thesis presents a development of classical canonical formalism and the usual transition schema to quantum dynamics. The question of transition from relativistic mechanics to relativistic quantum dynamics is answered by developing a homogeneous formalism which is relativistically invariant. Using this formalism the Klein-Gordon equation is derived as the relativistic analog of the Schroedinger equation. Using this formalism further, a method of generating other relativistic equations (with spin) is presented.

The Educational Philosophy of Frederick Gordon Bonser, with Special Emphasis upon Industrial Arts

Blackburn, George Weldon 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was threefold in nature. The first purpose was to study the life and educational background of Frederick Gordon Bonser in order to gain an understanding of the man and his educational purposes and objectives. A second purpose was to gain an insight into Bonser's philosophy of education; and the third purpose was to examine the available writings of Bonser in an attempt to analyze his philosophy of industrial arts as a phase of general education.
