Improving Work Based Assessment: Addressing grade inflation numerically or pedagogically?

Robbins, Joy, Firth, Amanda, Evans, Maria 30 April 2018 (has links)
Yes / Work based assessment (WBA) is a common but contentious practice increasingly used to grade university students on professional degrees. A key issue in WBA is the potentially low assessment literacy of the assessors, which can lead to a host of unintended results, including grade inflation. We identified grade inflation in the WBA of the clinical module analysed for this study, and to address it we trialled two adjustments over a four-year period. The first and simpler adjustment, reducing the academic weighting of the WBA component of the module, appeared to lower grade inflation but actually had the inverse effect over time. The second adjustment, introducing a structured formative assessment, reduced the average WBA grade both initially and over time. In addition to this desired result, the second adjustment has brought ongoing benefits to the learning and teaching on the module as a whole.

Sacred stories of classroom, school, county, and state : navigating professional knowledge landscapes in the face of mandated reading initiatives

Darden, Lora Webb 03 February 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of collaboration among members of a first grade team as they participated in a state mandated reading initiative. The second purpose was to examine how top-down mandates of state reading initiatives and collaboration among team members translated into “secret stories” of classroom instruction for the three focus teachers. The study also considered my role as the campus reading coach, as I attempted to facilitate the translation of the reading initiative to meet the diverse needs of the team members, while navigating issues of power among the campus administration and the first grade team. Qualitative research methods were used to document and describe (a) the interactions and collaboration of the first grade team during grade level reading meetings; (b) the formation of micro-groups due to power issues; (c) literacy practices of the three focus teachers and; (d) the secret stories of members of the first grade team as they navigated the troubled landscape of the second year of the reading initiative. The first grade meetings were observed and documented for five months, as teachers completed the reading initiative modules and attempted to translate those practices in order to complement their existing classroom practices. Each of the three focus first grade teachers was interviewed and recorded during classroom instruction. Interviews with students were also conducted in order to gain the perspective of literacy practices from a child’s point of view. Data for the study included field notes from observations, student and teacher interviews, digital images of student work and classroom texts, and digital video and audio recordings of interviews and classroom instruction. The findings of the study indicate that teachers translated staff development practices in accordance with their existing beliefs and tended to gravitate toward and collaborate with those who shared common pedagogical beliefs. The role of the reading coach was best served when the coaching protocols were transparent to all team members. The study revealed the inevitability of conflict in an atmosphere of collaboration as well as the notion that teachers are the true curriculum makers regardless of the initiative. / text

Modélisation et optimisation des procédés de polymérisation d’éthylène / Modeling and optimization of ethylene polymerisation processes

Gu, Xue-Ping 11 November 2008 (has links)
La conduite des réacteurs a été analysée et le changement de grade simulé / Modeling and optimization of olefin polymerization processes based on polymerization and process characteristics provide guidance to plants and improve industrial processes. In this work, a model is proposed and its parameters determined to calculate thermodynamic and physical properties of the ethylene polymerization system. Based on industrial Zigler-Natta catalyzed multi-active sites ethylene polymerization kinetics, both steady and transient state plant-scale models are developed for industrial slurry and gas phase ethylene polymerization processes. The operating conditions of the reactors are analyzed; the grade transition and process optimization simulated

A Comparison of the Achievement Made by Pupils in Single-Grade and Double-Grade Group

Brooks, Sallie Kirkland January 1950 (has links)
The problem is to endeavor to discover whether children who were placed in a double or combination grade (a room containing two grades) could be expected to advance as rapidly in their educational achievement as children in rooms containing only a single grade.

The Effects of Teaching Study Skills and Reading, Writing, and Listening Skills as a Specific Course of Study for Ninth Grade Students

Fillman, Tony Wayne 05 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to test the effects of teaching selected study skills and reading, writing, and listening skills as a specific course of study for ninth grade students. To study this problem, the performance of students enrolled in a study skills and reading, writing, and listening skills course was compared to that of a comparable group of ninth graders, electing the course but not permitted to take it, on the basis of performance as measured by mean gain on alternate forms of the Spitzer Study Skills Test and on the Sequential Test of Educational Progress--Reading-Writing-Listening.

The Effects of Group Counseling upon Visual Perception and its Relationship to Other Forms of Perception

Berryman, Berle Wayne 05 1900 (has links)
The study of perception of visual images and the influence of counseling upon them has received little if any attention. This study was designed to investigate this uncharted area and to demonstrate the effects of counseling upon visual perception. The primary function of this investigation was to seek answers to the following questions. Is it possible for group counseling to have an effect on one's perception of visual stimuli? Will a counseling experience which produces a change in a person' behavior also cause that person to perceive visual images in a different way than he perceived them before counseling? In other words, does a concomitant relationship exist between visual perception and other forms of perception?

The Effect of Supplementary Materials upon Academic Achievement in and Attitude toward Mathematics among Eighth Grade Students

Wilkinson, Gerald Glendel 05 1900 (has links)
The problem of the study was to examine the effectiveness of using supplementary materials in the teaching of eighth grade mathematics. The study considered the effect that supplementary materials had on students in terms of the following variables--attitude toward mathematics, mathematical concepts, problem solving ability, understanding common fractions, computation of common fractions, decimal fractions and per cent, concepts of numbers and numerals (number system and operations), and concepts of numbers and numerals (decimal place value).
