Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the role played by câmera images in the Gregory Bateson's work Naven. The work - recently translated into Portuguese - deals with the study of a ceremony homonymous to the title practiced by the Iatmul, tribe in New Guinea, in mid 1930, intended to welcome the son of a sister for an accomplishment considered adult. In Naven, after three hundred pages with a triple review of the ritual (ethological, sociological and structural), Bateson presents 28 photographic plates totaling 49 photographs. We intend, through a heuristic perspective, to bring forward this book little studied in academic circles in Brazil, performing a reflection on the photographic work contained in Bateson's Naven. Availing myself of an anthropological view, but without leaving aside the artistic, we analyze the photographic plates taken by the author. The aim is to bring a contribution to the history of Visual Anthropology, in order to be able to do in the future methodological advances, and diverse in this field of research.

Two or One (documentary and dissertation) proposes a reflection on the plural nature of human perception inspired by Gregory Bateson's epistemology and trough the contact of the author with Macacu's lagoon, in Garopaba, Santa Catarina. Emphasizing on feminility, as one way of approaching the multiples versions of the world, the research moves from talks with women who narrate their personal stories and fantastic tales, and, photographic observations of the nature an details of their homes in this shared space. From those layers a multifaced portrait is compounded in the cinematographic editing, giving visibility to what is between the relationships, with the purpose of breaking up the polarity and amplifying the eco created in the sum of different ways of expression / Mestrado / Mestre em Multimeios

Irrational doorways : religion and spirituality in the work of the Beat Generation

Reynolds, Loni Sophia January 2011 (has links)
My thesis explores the role of religion and spirituality in the work of the Beat Generation, a mid-twentieth century American literary movement. I focus on four major Beat authors: William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Gregory Corso. Through a close reading of their work, I identify the major religious and spiritual attitudes that shape their texts. All four authors’ religious and spiritual beliefs form a challenge to the Modern Western worldview of rationality, embracing systems of belief which allow for experiences that cannot be empirically explained. They also assert the primacy of the individual—a major American value—in a society which the authors believed to encroach upon individual agency. Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Corso are also strongly influenced by established religious traditions: an aspect of their work that is currently overlooked in Beat criticism. Burroughs’ belief in a magical universe shapes his work. Ginsberg is heavily influenced by the Jewish exegetical tradition. Kerouac and Corso’s work contains Catholic themes. My study rectifies some tendencies in current criticism which I find problematic: a dismissal of the Beats as a countercultural phenomenon rather than a literary movement, a tendency to frame Beat religion and spirituality in vague language, and a tendency to focus solely on Buddhism within the movement. My study illustrates that the Beat authors’ work contains serious religious and spiritual content, that they take part in American religious and literary traditions, and that the authors engage with major social issues of the post-war period.

The Map and the Territory in the Poetry of Wallace Stevens

Thompson, Erik Robb 12 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, Wallace Stevens' imagination-reality problem as depicted in his poetry is discussed in terms of an eco-critical map-territory divide. Stevens's metaphor of "the necessary angel" acts to mediate human necessity, the map, with natural necessity, the territory, in order to retain contact with changing cultural and environmental conditions. At stake in this mediation are individual freedom and the pertinence of the imagination to the experience of reality. In Chapter 2, the attempt at reconciliation of these two necessities will be described in terms of surrealism. Stevens's particular approach to surrealism emphasizes separating and delineating natural necessity from human necessity so that through the poem the reader can experience the miracle of their reconciliation. In Chapter 3, this delineation of the two necessities, map and territory, will be examined against Modernist "decreation," which is the stripping bare of human perception for the purpose of regaining glimpses of the first idea of the external world. And in Chapter 4, Stevens's approach to the problem of the map-territory divide will be considered against his alienation or internal exile: balancing nature and identity through mediating fictions results in a compromised approach to the marriage of mind and culture in a historically situated place.
