Matt, Caroline January 2015 (has links)

Laughing Outside My Box: A Risky and Contextual Love Story in Three Lady Parts

Hull, Heather 01 December 2009 (has links)
This purpose of this document is to examine risk as a thematic element in the practice of comedy as performed by women. Risk is evident in various ways: individual female comedic performance, the labeling of someone as "female comedic performer" and in being an individual female who strives to undertake comedy as a means of personal performance. Through an analysis of comedians Tina Fey, Kathy Griffin, Sarah Silverman and myself, this thesis recognizes an appreciation of that risk, argues for the importance of context in thinking about comedy, and ultimately calls for the further inclusion of women in the historical canon of comedic performance.

Cherubim and Seraphim : a textual and iconographic study

Deysel, Lesley Claire Frances 21 January 2009 (has links)
The Hebrew words (cherub) and (seraph) are well-known terms, but it is unclear exactly to what they refer. Many sources agree that the word cherub refers to a composite creature such as a griffin, sphinx or winged bull. Less research has been done on the meaning of the word seraph. This study employs a textual and iconographic analysis to attempt to reconstruct a picture of what the authors of the Hebrew Bible had in mind when they wrote about cherubim and seraphim. Every text in the Hebrew Bible mentioning one of these words is listed, translated and analysed with the aid of various sources. Special attention is paid to texts that discuss cherubim or seraphim at length, such as the description of the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus, the visions of cherubim in Ezekiel and the reference to seraphim in Isaiah. Artefacts from certain cultures and dating within a specific timeframe, depicting composite creatures, are studied and analysed. Possible depictions of seraphim are identified, using information from the texts of the Hebrew Bible and through analogy with widely-accepted depictions of cherubim. The study contends that where cherubim were seen as winged composite creatures with parts of two or more of the eagle, lion, ox/bull and human, seraphim was a term used to describe winged composite creatures including parts of the serpent. It is also argued that seraphim are generally not associated with dragonlike composite creatures because of the negative connotations that modern symbolism has of snakes and dragons, and that the ancient Hebrews did not necessarily share this view. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Ancient Languages / MA / Unrestricted

Aplicação de uma nova proposta de discretização das equações Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock na geração de bases Gaussianas para cálculos de átomos e moléculas / Aplication of a new proposal for the discretization of the Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock equations in the generation of Gaussian leases for atomic and molecular calculations

Reis, Carlos Alberto Gonçalves 28 August 2009 (has links)
The ongoing evolution of computers has led to several changes in the way of doing science, to create a multitude of new options for solving scientific problems. The implementation of computational methods allowed the theoretical treatment of large systems, complex and different areas of science. One area of particular focus and chemistry of molecules, now can describe relatively complex molecular systems with extreme precision. The theoretical methods in molecular chemistry can be basically divided into classical and quantum methods, depending on what we consider, we can also use sequential or hybrid methods, however for a detailed description of the electronic structure and chemical bonds is required the use of quantum methods. Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of atoms and molecules have been specially made for the first time using the method of Roothaan expansion in the decade of the fifties . In 1986, a full version of the equations of Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock (HF-GW) was presented in the literature , inspired by the Method of Coordinate Generator (MCG), introduced by Griffin and Wheeler in the decade of fifty . The full equations of the Hartree-Fock method was called the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (HF-MCG) and its first applications was the generation of atomic universal bases In fact, a careful numerical integration of equations of GW-HF allows the generation of universal bases and more widespread than those already published in the literature .Recently, Barbosa and Silva proposed a modification in the methodology of the discretization to improve the collection of sets of Gaussian functions (GTF) by means of MCG-HF, making possible the generation of GTF as good or better as the so far obtained in the literature, but more compact and precise (accurate). A polynomial expansion is proposed as a new way to discretize the Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock equations of the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method. The implementation of the polynomial expansion in the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method discretizes the Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock equations through a numerical mesh, which is not equally spaced. This procedure makes the optimization of Gaussian exponents in the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method more flexible and more efficient. The results obtained with the polynomial expansion for atomic Hartree-Fock energies show this technique is very powerful when employed in the design of compact and high accurate Gaussian basis sets used in ab initio non-relativistic (Hartree-Fock) and relativistic (Dirac-Fock) calculations.

The paper will consider some aspects and conceptions about the gender and the epistolar narrative consolidated ond the Nick Bantock s Triology. The resources used by the author are detached to considerer a new and instigated epistolar romance that could sustain the tension existed between the two speechs: literature and plastics arts One becomes, therefore, essential not only the analysis of the relations of the literal and pictorial contents of the postcards and letters of the trilogy (delimited in 2º volume of the trilogy, intitled Sabine´s Notebook: In Which The Extraordinary Correspondence of Griffin & Sabine Continues),but also the study of the double one as a possibility of reading of the trilogy.

The Architecture of Newman College

Turnbull, Jeffrey John January 2004 (has links)
This study engaged with the architecture of the ‘Initial Structure’ at Newman College, 1915-1918, so as to establish this building’s place in the oeuvre of Walter Burley Griffin (1876-1937). Griffin’s architecture at Newman College was unparalleled in Melbourne yet it has never been the subject of a comprehensive study. Further, a measure for Griffin’s creative method and architectural style has not been developed to date although much scholarship has been devoted to the identification of events and works in Griffin’s career. Furthermore a substantive analysis of the architecture of Walter Burley Griffin was lacking that defined and distinguished his work from that of the so-called ‘Prairie School’, and of Frank Lloyd Wright. / Walter Burley Griffin was the conceptual designer of Newman College, while Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1961), his wife and architectural practice partner was its facilitator. An evaluation of Griffin’s university education, 1895-1899, drew out the compositional concepts of parti, types and architectonics, as his own preferred means of working. Griffin’s mature style in the college design was also indebted to his architectural practice and experiences in Chicago, 1899-1914. An initial assumption in this study was that Griffin was eclectic, as were the American predecessors he admired, Thomas Jefferson and Henry Hobson Richardson, as were Griffin’s contemporaries, Louis Henri Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Thus the sources of Griffin’s architectural ideas, elements, and methods of composition, have been traced in this study. / American campus designs were surveyed and comparisons made with the other three late 19th Century college buildings at the University of Melbourne to distinguish Griffins’ innovations in college planning, construction and form at Newman College. The description of the commissioning, committee-work and program for the Newman College building revealed the social and political idealism that linked Griffin with his supporters among Melbourne’s Roman Catholic community. Griffin worked with ‘structure’ in mind, both compositional and constructional. Particular partis, typologies and architectonic patterns have been 3 identified in the compositional structures of the college building design. Similarly Griffin’s adaptations of new and exploratory building techniques were investigated. / Griffin’s sources were not only American. He derived inspiration equally from seminal European and Asian precedents, which provided instances of an underlying compositional structure. In the architecture of Newman College the composite plans, mixed construction techniques and materials, and richly layered forms allowed Griffin scope to express ideal college purposes, spiritual universality, and organic wholeness.
