Função-historiador: Projeto Grupo Atlas e guerras civis libanesas / -

Santos, Vivian Palma Braga dos 02 July 2018 (has links)
Function-historian is the term presented in this thesis as a theoretical proposal of a new relationship between visual arts and political conflicts in the contemporary artistic scene, to which Walid Raad\'s artistic practice on the Lebanese civil wars between 1975 and 1990, concentrated in the The Atlas Group Project (1989-2004) is fundamental. The thesis proposes similarities between the materials, structures and procedures that constitute it and the resources used by the field of history in the construction of its narratives. The argument is that through these approaches we can identify interactions between contemporary visual arts and political conflicts that are elaborated through historical interest, intelligence and ambition. More specifically, we recognize that through the resemblance of plastic resources, he Atlas Group Project presents, in the field of the arts, ways of compose/tell stories about Lebanese civil wars. In this, this artistic practice distinguishes itself from the habitual preoccupations with the discourses of memory and the limits of representation of the experience of violence, so present in works centered in this specific thematic cut. His approach to history is based on a split between an artist-subject Raad and an artistic position of authorship that ground the work of art, avoiding that an experience of conflict of the artist is taken as an explanatory tool of his practice. The function-historian, as an activity, is recognized at the level of artistic productions, at the junction of a series of elements, discussed in this thesis, through which we identify an artistic authority in the Atlas Group Project that proposes ways of composing/ telling stories about recent political conflicts events, while at the same time criticizing the methods of composing historical narratives.

An exploratory analysis of differently focused women's organizations in community development and health.

Mogotlane, Sophie Mataniele. January 1996 (has links)
Two research methods, a correlational survey and a case study method were used to explore the impact of health focused and economic focused women's organizations on community development and health. Through the study the following questions were answered: (i) Is there a difference in the health and development indicators of the households of Elim Care Group Project members, Akanani members and members of the community who do not belong to any of the organizations? (ii) What contribution have these organizations made to individuals' and/or communities' way of life? (iii) What aspects of these organizations' structure and/or function strengthen or weaken the organization? For the correlational survey, quantitative data were collected from three categories of thirty households each that belonged to Care Group members, Akanani members and community members who did not belong to any organization. The analysis of the data showed that both the health focused and economic focused organizations kept their focus even though their functioning tended to overlap. The health focused group had a greater impact on health indicators e.g. number of diarrhoea episodes, respiratory tract infection episodes, nutritional state, while the economic focused group had greater impact on development indicators e.g. housing, income and education. The improvement in the development indicators did not influence the health indicators directly. The qualitative data collected for the case study provided an indepth information about the case studied. The health focused organization demonstrated stability in its management. This was composed of health personnel under the employment of the Department of Health Managing the Care Group was a paid job for them. The organization was established and supported by the community and therefore expressed the community's concerns. The economic focused organization provided opportunities for the rural people to establish money making enterprises. Some of the problems shown in this study in this regard relate to poor managerial and business skills that resulted in the production of products that were not readily marketable in the locality. This caused a lot of anxiety amongst members as earnings were irregular. The differences in the structure and functioning of the groups were analysed. These influenced the effectiveness and continued viability of the organizations. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1996.

Developing and Assessing Professional Competencies: a Pipe Dream? : Experiences from an Open-Ended Group Project Learning Environment

Daniels, Mats January 2011 (has links)
Professional competencies are explicitly identified in the primary learning outcomes for science and engineering degrees at many tertiary institutions.  Fulfillment of the requirements to equip our students with these skills, while formally acknowledged as important by all stakeholders, can be hard to demonstrate in practice.  Most degree awarding institutions would have difficulties if asked to document where in degree programs such competencies are developed. The work in this thesis addresses the issue of professional competencies from several angles.  The Open-Ended Group Project (OEGP) concept is introduced and proposed as an approach to constructing learning environments in which students’ development of professional competencies can be stimulated and assessed.  Scholarly, research-based development of the IT in Society course unit (ITiS) is described and analyzed in order to present ideas for tailoring OEGP-based course units towards meeting learning objectives related to professional competence.  Work in this thesis includes an examination of both the meanings attributed to the term professional competencies, and methods which can be used to assess the competencies once they are agreed on. The empirical work on developing ITiS is based on a framework for educational research, which has been both refined and extended as an integral part of my research.  The action research methodology is presented and concrete examples of implementations of different pedagogical interventions, based on the methodology, are given.  The framework provides support for relating a theoretical foundation to studies, or development, of learning environments.  The particular theoretical foundation for the examples in this thesis includes, apart from the action research methodology, constructivism, conceptual change, threshold concepts, communities of practice, ill-structured problem solving, the reflective practicum, and problem based learning. The key finding in this thesis is that development and assessment of professional competencies is not a pipe dream.  Assessment can be accomplished, and the OEGP concept provides a flexible base for creating an appropriate learning environment for this purpose. / <p>Felaktigt tryckt som Digital Comprehensive Summaries of Uppsala Dissertations from the Faculty of Science and Technology 738</p>
