As society progresses towards more digitalization companies can now use technology to increase their productivity. Use of digital tools help companies to stay competitive but at the same time affects the natural environment in a negative way. The aspect of sustainable manufacturing, usage and disposal of IT-products have not always been prioritized. In order to meet the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda companies have to be willing to let the ecological sustainability permeate every process in the company, including IT. The aim of this study is to highlight what prevents companies from focusing more on ecologically sustainable IT and what strategic measures can be undertaken to achieve ecological sustainability. The study has been based on the research fields of circular economy, green IT, resistance/motivation to ecological sustainability and strategic sustainability. We collected data through semi-structured interviews with employees in decision-making roles regarding the purchase of IT in companies where IT is not a part of the core business. To bring clarity about how the companies operate on a strategic level when it comes to IT we created an analytic framework based on frameworks of ecologically sustainable strategies that Borland et al. (2016) designed. The results of the study shows that some companies are going in the right direction by making strategic choices when purchasing, using and disposing IT. Meanwhile other companies choose to focus on how they could take responsibility for their climate footprint in their core business. One of the reasons why the companies disregard the processes outside their core business is because they lack knowledge about how they should require more sustainable IT equipment. Therefore, IT is not prioritized when talking about the company’s ecological sustainability. Even though the result of this study shows that companies are taking steps towards a more ecologically sustainable future, it is obvious that more has to be done.
