A complex issue : The students transition from public school to upper secondary school/high school in the subject of History in the contemporary school system

Lindström, Jonathan January 2012 (has links)
Being a student in the educational system is in itself a challenging exercise, considering the various parts that may matter in different extent for the students. There is a syllabus, there are different backgrounds and contexts for each student and there is also the knowledge in the subject to consider. This study sets out to explore to which extent teachers and students reflect about the transition from public school to upper secondary school/high school, specifically in the context of History as subject. What do they think about it and how do they work with it? By interviewing five teachers and letting 94 students in upper secondary school completing a survey about this subject (the transition), I can conclude that the matter is complex, both for students and teachers, however still a significant and important issue to discuss. The teachers shows tendencies in favouring the chronological time line as educational instrument, while implementing the eventual lack of such time line in the public school. Still they have none or little insight in the syllabuses for the public school, raising yet another issue – to what extent should teachers care for syllabuses which they don’t, formally, have to recognize as part of their assignments as upper secondary school teachers? The teachers are generally aware of the difficulty that the transition implies and the students are neither overwhelmingly satisfied nor dissatisfied, which means that work could and should be done to ensure an education that is easing the students way to knowledge.

Lässtrategier vid textbaserad problemlösning : Läsförståelse i matematiska textuppgifter / Reading Strategies in Word Problem Solving : Reading Comprehension in Mathematical Word Problems

Paping, Noemi, Råsmark, Moa January 2024 (has links)
This thesis shows that there is a significant connection between students reading comprehension and their problem-solving abilities in mathematics. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate which reading strategies occurs while teaching, which reading strategies have been examined in research and which reading strategies are recommended by the research. To investigate this, a systematic literature review was conducted, resulting in a final selection of eight articles that were analyzed through content analysis. The result shows that students use a variety of reading strategies when reading a mathematical problem, with some being more or less recommended by research. One consensus in the research is that students need to build a repertoire of reading strategies, as this is essential for being able to read and understand a problem. The result points towards three reading comprehension models: the diamond model, visualization, and chunking the reading, which have been studied and are also recommended by the research. The result also highlights two reading strategies, the keyword strategy and retelling, which are particularly interesting. The keyword strategy is often used in teaching and is also recommended by the research. However, it should be used with caution and thoughtfulness, as discussed in the discussion of the result. Retelling is a less common reading strategy, but when used together with other strategies, it can enhance the reading comprehension of word problems in mathematics. Finally, it is discussed that many of the found reading strategies are time-consuming. This is an aspect to consider when implementing reading strategies in the mathematics classroom.
