Two-Player Stochastic Games with Perfect and Zero Information / Jeux Stochastiques à Deux Joueurs à Information Parfaite et Zéro

Kelmendi, Edon 02 December 2016 (has links)
We consider stochastic games that are played on finite graphs. The subject of the first part are two-player stochastic games with perfect information. In such games the two players take turns choosing actions from a finite set, for an infinite duration, resulting in an infinite play. The objective of the game is given by a Borel-measurable and bounded payoff function that maps infinite plays to real numbers. The first player wants to maximize the expected payoff, and the second player has the opposite objective, that of minimizing the expected payoff. We prove that if the payoff function is both shift-invariant and submixing then the game is half-positional. This means that the first player has an optimal strategy that is at the same time pure and memoryless. Both players have perfect information, so the actions are chosen based on the whole history. In the second part we study finite-duration games where the protagonist player has zero information. That is, he gets no feedback from the game and consequently his strategy is a finite word over the set of actions. Probabilistic finite automata can be seen as an example of such a game that has only a single player. First we compare two classes of probabilistic automata: leaktight automata and simple automata, for which the value 1 problem is known to be decidable. We prove that simple automata are a strict subset of leaktight automata. Then we consider half-blind games, which are two player games where the maximizer has zero information and the minimizer is perfectly informed. We define the class of leaktight half-blind games and prove that it has a decidable maxmin reachability problem.

Smuts, Elaine 15 March 2005 (has links)
Although these discourses construct disability differently, three of them – the lay, charity and medical discourses – view disability very negatively. The lay discourse sees disability as something to be fearful of and therefore chooses to ignore it. According to the charity discourse people who are disabled should be pitied and helped because they are dependent and helpless. The medical discourse defines disability as abnormal – a “sickness” that requires treatment by medical experts. This study endeavors to challenge the stereotypical “picture” of a person with a disability. By conducting a narrative research design the life-world of a unique boy (who has a physical disability, called spina bifida) is captured in the telling of his life-story. A narrative research design was specifically chosen to portray the context and life-experiences (good and bad) of this little boy – a child in totality. The narrative life-story was written in the first person in order to invite the reader as a co-participant into the world of a boy with spina bifida. An asset-based approach accompanied the narrative research design in order to explore whether positive aspects of this boy’s life-world could be identified. Where disability is concerned, the asset-based approach proposes a shift from the traditional “deficit approach” towards a “strength-based approach”. This study not only tells the captivating life-story of a boy with a physical disability, but also identifies and embraces the positive side of living with a disability. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

Influence of the Non-linear Effects in the Design of Viscous Dampers for Bridge Cables

Acar, Yalda, Jingstål, Pontus January 2014 (has links)
In this master thesis the performance of external viscous dampers attached to cables in cable-stayed bridges have been studied. A comparison has been performed between a linear and a non-linear cable model. The comparison was carried out for two bridge cables, one from the Dubrovnik Bridge and the other from the Normandie Bridge. The performance of the dampers have been measured in terms of maximum achieved damping ratio and minimum amplitude of vibration. The analysis was performed using the finite element method. The damping ratio was measured using both the half-power bandwidth method and by calculating the loss factor. The half-power bandwidth method can only be applied to a linear system. Therefore, the loss factor was evaluated for the linear model and compared to the results obtained using the half-power bandwidth method. From the comparison, it was concluded that the damping ratio evaluated using the loss factor was similar to the results obtained when using the half-power bandwidth method. However, when calculating the loss factor, it was of great importance that the resonance frequency of the system was accurately determined. The loss factor was then calculated for the non-linear model and compared to the results obtained for the linear model. Since the loss factor measures the energy dissipated in a system, it could be utilised for the non-linear model. When computing the strain energy for the non-linear model an approximate method was used to take into consideration the strain energy caused by the static deformation of the cable. From the comparison between the linear and non-linear cable models, it was concluded that the optimal damper coefficients obtained by both models are not significantly different. However, there is an uncertainty in the results due to the fact that an approximate method was used when calculating the strain energy for the nonlinear model. It was also observed that a very accurate evaluation of the system’s resonance frequency was needed to calculate the loss factor. It was also observed that the variation in amplitude of vibration for varying damper coefficient was small for all modes of vibration for the Dubrovnik Bridge Cable as well as for the first mode of vibration for the Normandie Bridge Cable. The difference in the results between the two bridge cables needs to be investigated further in order to get a better understanding of the results.

[en] AN OPEN AND EXTENSIBLE MODELING STRATEGY FOR CREATING PLANAR SUBDIVISION MODELS FOR COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS / [pt] UMA ESTRATÉGIA DE MODELAGEM ABERTA E EXTENSÍVEL PARA A CRIAÇÃO DE MODELOS DE SUBDIVISÕES PLANARES PARA MECÂNICA COMPUTACIONAL

15 February 2022 (has links)
[en] This work presents an open and extensible modeling strategy, developed in Python, for creating planar subdivision models. The strategy takes the form of a geometric modeling library called HETOOL, developed in the work and of general use, based on the well-known and renowned Half-Edge topological data structure. In addition to considering the topological and geometric aspects of the modeling, a strategy also allows for an end-user configuration of simulation attributes. These characteristics, added to the availability of the source code, provide a useful and relevant tool for the development of educational tools for modeling computational mechanics. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed strategy, an application was developed, called the Finite Element Method Educational Computer Program (FEMEP), which allows the creation of two-dimensional finite element models, with mesh generation per region, for various types of mechanics simulation computational. The developed package presents iterative and dynamic modeling that performs an automatic intersection between the modeled geometric elements. HETOOL offers several functions and facilities to the user, allowing the use of the package even without the user having knowledge about the topological concepts involved in the implementation of this data structure. The package makes it possible to create and configure attributes simply and quickly from a file in JSON format. This versatility in creating attributes allows the application of this package to solve several problems present in engineering and in other areas of the scientific environment.

Disentangling the Intrinsic Attributes and the Physical Properties in Cobalt-based Quaternary Heusler Compounds

Omar, Ahmad 29 March 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Heusler compounds are cubic intermetallics with a wide range of interesting properties, which are closely related to the structure of the material. In addition, several exotic physical phenomena have been predicted for different compositions in the family, but have not been experimentally realized. By and large, the lack of success in realization of various properties are due to the issues with intrinsic material attributes, which have been difficult to resolve as the relationship between them is not well understood. The aim of this work has been to unravel the entanglement between the intrinsic material attributes of cobalt-based quaternary Heusler compounds such as the structure, defects (disorder), chemical inhomogeneities etc., and the resulting physical properties.

Suitability of microwave application to heat reclaimed asphalt and crushed aggregates as an energy efficient method in the production of half warm mix

Nieftagodien, Riyaaz 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The pavement construction industry aims to reduce its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by investigating various energy efficient practices. The industry has focused on reducing energy consumption by producing Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) surfacing materials that are workable at lower temperatures in relation to Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), as a means to reduce carbon emissions. Half-Warm Foamed Bitumen Mixtures (HWF) is a relatively new material and is produced at temperatures below 100°C. This translates to large energy savings to overcome the latent heat of steam when exceeding 100°C. The characteristics of HWF mixes are a compromise between those of Foamed Bitumen Stabilised material (BSM-foam) and HMA characteristics. These include to a limited extent the improved tensile strength, particle coating and durability of HMA; and the shear strength of BSM-foam. The use of microwave technology as an efficient heating method to produce improved engineering properties of BSM-foam is proposed in this study. The benefits include energy saving due to its volumetric heating capability as well as rapid heating which improve productivity when using suitable materials. The aspect of recycling material brings forth further energy saving and emissions reduction when reusing materials. The portability of the in-plant recycling machines is an ideal candidate with logistical advantages to implement microwave generators to produce HWF mixes. This study is subdivided into four parts as it progressively investigates the potential to heat aggregates and produce HWF material. Firstly it investigates the heating potential of four aggregates, namely Hornfels, Quartzite, Eucrite, Granite and Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) at various moisture contents using a microwave apparatus. The second part discusses the thermodynamics of the preliminary investigation to provide insight into the third part, the Primary Investigation. The primary investigation evaluates the tensile strength and shear properties of two material blends by respectively implementing Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) and monotonic triaxial tests on specimens. The two blends were a combination of RA and crushed hornfels. The fourth and final part evaluates the HWF properties in relation to those of the equivalent BSM-foam product by means of a pavement analysis. The highest laboratory production temperature achieved was depicted by the material properties, microwave power capability and production rates. This temperature was consistently recorded at 50°C which theoretically simulates an in-field production rate of approximately 25 tons per hour. ITS test results indicate 100% increase in tensile strengths and an increase in compaction density for the HWF mixes. Large reduction in moisture contents is also observed after curing in relation to BSM-foam. The benefits in improving a layer within a pavement structure have an effect on the pavement’s overall performance. This could assist in reducing the requirement for premium layers e.g. thickness of HMA within the structure, thereby further assisting energy conservation. The evaluation of the microwave heated HWF mixes can be considered economical if designed with a purpose to meet the thermal dynamic requirements of a material considering the microwaves volumetric potential. ITS toets resultate wys `n 100 % verhoging in spankrag asook `n toename in kompakte vir die HWS mengsels.

Validation and evaluation of the stable isotope marking technique in the lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens

Carriere, Benjamin 14 July 2015 (has links)
In this thesis the enriched stable isotope marking technique was examined to determine its validity and effectiveness in marking of Lake Sturgeon fin rays. The enriched stable isotope marking technique uses stable isotopes of elements that replace calcium in boney tissue, which are fixed in nature, however in laboratory settings can be easily manipulated. Manipulated ratios of naturally occurring isotopes can be determined from a small sample of the fin ray, thus allowing for the discrimination of fish stocks. Further, the thesis examined the underlying assumptions for strontium and barium into the Lake Sturgeon. For the marking technique to work, strontium and barium must be taken up from the environment and accumulated long-term in boney tissue. Net flux and tissue retention of strontium is reported and the research has demonstrated that enriched stable isotopes can be successfully used to mark the fin ray of Lake Sturgeon for long-term stock discrimination. / October 2015

Contributions to the statistical mechanics of ideal two and a half dimensional flows

Thalabard, Simon 28 October 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The present manuscript deals with the statistical mechanics of some inviscid fluidmodels which are possibly relevant in the context of geophysics and astrophysics. Weinvestigate the case of axially symmetric flows, two-dimensional Boussinesq flows, andtwo-dimensional magneto-hydro fluids. Those flows can be loosely referred to as twodimensionalflows with three components ("2D3C"). In addition to the two-dimensionalvelocity field, they describe the evolution of an additional field variable, which representseither a magnetic current, a salinity, a temperature or a swirl depending on the situation. In common with the dynamics of strictly two-dimensional hydrodynamical flows, thenon-linear dynamics of 2D3C flows is constrained by the presence of an infinite numberof Casimir invariants, which emerge as dynamical invariants in the limit of a vanishingforcing and a vanishing dissipation . In common with three-dimensional flows, the vorticityis not only mixed but also stretched by the dynamics. The additional field may actas a source or a sink of kinetic energy. It is commonly believed that such flows have thepropensity to develop large scale coherent structures. Whether those long lived structuresare equilibrium or metastable structures is however not so clear, nor are the exactconditions of their emergence. The role of the Casimir invariants in constraining those isnot so obvious either.

Jocismus: sociální hnutí katolické církve v 1. polovině 20. století / The Jocism: A Social Movement of the Catholic Church in the First Half of the 20th Century

Štofaník, Jakub January 2011 (has links)
The work examines formation of the Catholic Church's social teaching from the end of the nineteenth century until the end of the World War II. It pays attention to official documents denoting its realm as well as to the response to the programme within the Belgian milieu. On the example of La jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne the work tries to indentify foundations of the Church's social teaching along with changes, shifts and adaptations that appeared in their unique form in the JOC movement. The work also notices origins, formation and development of JOC itself. This historic and religious topic is set in wider social and cultural context. Latter part of the work is devoted to particularities in the acceptance of Church's social teaching in Czechoslovakia in between the world wars.

"Mám obrovskou touhu cestovat a vidět cizí země." Žena na cestách v druhé polovině 19. století. / "I have strong desire to travel and learn about foreign countries." Travelling woman in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Vrchotová, Lenka January 2011 (has links)
The Diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of travelling of women in Bohemia in the second half of the nineteenth century. It concentrates on the middle class women, who at this time started to travel. The practical part of the thesis sets a typology of journeys and final destinations. The typology is based on a wide range of primary sources, among others on women diaries, memoirs, articles concerning travelling in fashion magazines and in magazine Ženské listy as well as on relevant documents of the literary society Svatobor archive. The thesis focuses particularly on travelling resulting from the women new occupational needs reflecting thus a growing women emancipation movement in Bohemia and changes in social status of women in Bohemia in given period. The thesis also analyses the course of everyday life of women's travelling and provides an overview of possible sources of information and literature for women who at that time intended to travel.
