Market Access and Regional Wage Structure : Estimating the Helpman-Hanson Model for Sweden

Lundström, Lars January 2012 (has links)
In this paper the Helpman-Hanson model is estimated using Swedish municipality level data. The Helpman-Hanson model builds on Krugman’s contributions to the NEG theory but makes use of a housing sector instead of the usual agricultural sector. The Helpman-Hanson equation is optimized both in levels and in first differences and the results confirm a positive relationship between wages and market potential, although the effect of transport costs on the distribution of wages turns out to be non-existent. Additionally, all of the estimated structural parameter values end up within the consistency ranges required by theory and most of them, except for a very large estimate for the elasticity of substitution, fall in line with previous research.

Dingo media? R v Chamberlain as model for an Australian media event

Middleweek, Belinda May January 2007 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Dingo Media examines the development of media events using as a case study one of Australia’s most widely known criminal investigations, the disappearance of Azaria Chamberlain at “Ayers Rock”. Considering the case as a blueprint for the way mass media events develop and evolve in the late capitalist era, this thesis suggests that the event marks a turning point in negotiation of the public sphere and Australian national identity. Using an original model, I trace from the 1980s five phases through which news stories pass in their evolution as modern media events by comparing the Chamberlain saga to contemporary cases involving “controversial” women, Schapelle Corby, Joanne Lees and Pauline Hanson. The first phase examines the emerging practice of news workers focusing on personalities rather than events; the second phase analyses both the formation of counter-publics protesting the conviction, and the development of a dialogic connection between media and publics; the third phase investigates the rise of a modern celebrity industry promoting “ordinary” individuals into subjects of media discourse; the fourth phase considers the process of mythic production surrounding the Chamberlain case as related to processes of nation-building in the late 1980s; finally, the fifth phase critiques the prevalent view that, through continual retelling, the event has suffered a loss of meaning. Axiomatic to this study will be the politics of representation, how the media records, organises and mythologises information, as well as the interaction between texts and audiences.

N. R. Hanson e a metodologia da investigação cientifica

Menna, Sergio Hugo 07 December 2001 (has links)

The goal ofthis work is to present, to exemplify, and to improveNorwood Hanson's contributions to the methodology of scientific inquiry. Aiming to these goals, first I analyze Hanson's criticisms to the classic dichotomy between context of justification and context of discovery. Secondly, I develop his methodology of plausibility; that is, the set of 'criteria' that describe an area or scientific rationality greater than the traditional one. I support that this methodology was used by Hanson as a set of criteria for evaluating the plausibility of already advanced hypotheses (in special, working hypothesis) and not as a set of criteria or a 'machine' for discovering or generating new hypotheses. Last1y, I analyze -by means of different examples- the methodology of plausibility as it works within the continuum of scientific research, and I maintain that this methodology may constitute an instance of evaluation independent from the instance of justification / Mestrado / Mestre em Filosofia

In : An evaluation of Personas and Bardrams (2000) CSCW checklist for data gathering during a goaldriven interaction design process in an evironment with few users.

Hanson, Gustaf January 2013 (has links)
