A pesquisa consiste em um esforço de exposição, análise e interpretação de algumas questões teórico-metodológicas referentes à natureza da ciência geográfica presentes na obra do geógrafo estadunidense Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992). O recorte de análise escolhido pretende, a partir da definição do propósito da Geografia formulada pelo autor, compreender suas reflexões a respeito da relação entre os enfoques sistemático e regional na disciplina e pensar seu papel na história do pensamento geográfico do século XX, buscando evidenciar a operação de determinados mecanismos constitutivos do campo científico e de certas posturas filosóficas em sua obra. Hartshorne deixou um extenso legado para a Geografia em importantes obras e artigos publicados, sobretudo, entre as décadas de 1930 e 1960. Dentre essas contribuições, as obras The Nature of Geography (1939) e Perspective on The Nature of Geography (1959) estão entre as mais importantes peças da extensa produção intelectual do autor. Essas duas obras, conjuntamente aos textos de alguns comentadores e críticos, constituem o material fundamental da nossa análise. / The research consists in an effort to display, analysis and interpretation of some theoretical and methodological issues concerning the nature of geographical science in the works of American geographer Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992). The chosen analysis clipping want, from the definition of the purpose of Geography formulated by the author, understand his reflections on the relationship between systematic and regional approaches in the discipline and think his role in the history of geographical thought of the twentieth century in order to enhance the operation of certain constituent mechanisms of the scientific field and certain philosophical positions in his work. Hartshorne left an extensive legacy for Geography in important works and published articles, especially between the 1930s and 1960. Among these contributions, the works The Nature of Geography (1939) and Perspective on The Nature of Geography (1959) are among the most important parts of the extensive intellectual production of the author. These two works, together to the texts of some commentators and critics, are the fundamental material of our analysis.

A presente pesquisa refletiu sobre a natureza da geografia de Richard Hartshorne e de Fred K. Schaefer na busca por compreender elementos fundamentais da metodologia em geografia. Para tal, é apresentado um documento de Schaefer inédito na língua portuguesa, intitulado A Natureza da Geografia. O ponto de partida é uma introdução à trajetória intelectual de Richard Hartshorne, na qual são apontadas as principais questões envoltas ao seu pensamento. É destacada sua postura frente à caracterização metodológica da geografia, principalmente na explicação do conceito de região, da diferenciação e a integração de áreas, assim como a exposição filosófica sobre a corologia. A seguir, faço breve contextualização sobre o caminho acadêmico de Fred. K. Schaefer e volto esforço para a compreensão de seus trabalhos, em especial, seu único artigo publicado, Excepcionalismo na Geografia e o manuscrito A Natureza da Geografia. O documento traduzido para a língua portuguesa foi analisado, sucintamente, para que algumas questões já levantadas em seu artigo fossem explicadas com maior rigor. Essas questões dizem respeito aos aspectos metodológicos da disciplina, como a posição da ciência geográfica, enquanto sistemática ou idiográfica. Seguinte a exposição desses dois estudiosos, trato do debate possível entre essas duas concepções distintas de geografia. Primeiramente, por uma explicação sobre o movimento da produção intelectual da disciplina, seguida pela abordagem sobre o método, enquanto fundamento do conhecimento. Após as indagações levantadas, o estudo volta-se para a abordagem sobre a epistemologia da geografia, assim como os possíveis quadros paradigmáticos, como tentativas de fortalecer a importância desse debate para a atualidade da geografia. / This research thought over the nature of geography of the Richard Hartshorne and Fred K. Schaefer, searching for understand the essential elements of methodology in geography. For this effort, is presented a Schaefers document not yet translated into the portuguese language, entitled The Nature of Geography. The starting point is an introduction of the Richard Hartshorne intellectual path, in which are pointed the main issues surrounded in your thought. Is pointed out your stance on methodological characterization of geography, mainly on explanation of regional concept, areal differentiation and areal integration, as well as the philosophical presentation about chorology. Hereinafter, I do brief contextualization over the academic track of the Fred K. Schaefer and turn attempt for the comprehension of his works, in particular, his only published paper, Exceptionalism in Geography and the manuscript The Nature of Geography. The document translated into the Portuguese language was analyzed, succinctly, to some issues already raised in his paper, could be explained with strictness. This issues concern to the methodological aspects of discipline, as the geographical science position, while systematic or idiographic. Following the explanatory of these scholars, I deal the possible debate between these two distinct conceptions of geography. Primarily, by a explanation over the intellectual production movement of the discipline, followed by a approach over the method, as long as the foundation of knowledge. After the raised inquiries, the study turns to the approach about the geography epistemology, as well as the possible paradigmatic frame, on attempted to strengthen this debate onto present of geography.

Esta dissertação buscou analisar a geografia hartshorniana a partir do horizonte social em que foi forjada, os Estados Unidos da América do final do século XIX e início do século XX. Partindo das fontes bibliográficas originais referentes à questão, mostramos como os debates sobre epistemologia, na historiografia corrente da disciplina, desconsideraram questões cruciais para o entendimento da obra do autor, fruto de uma falta de aprofundamento do debate teórico associada à luta política entre os grupos que disputavam a vanguarda da disciplina a partir dos anos 1950. Pelas mãos dos manuais e de uma historiografia que continua a narrar uma história etapista com fases que se sucedem e avançam umas sobre as outras aproximando cada vez mais a geografia da cientificidade, os equívocos se perpetuaram e fazem parte do senso comum da disciplina ainda no presente. Entre as conclusões do trabalho, está a de que até hoje, em termos de análise da obra de Richard Hartshorne, as leituras são ou incompletas ou completamente equivocadas. / This work aimed to analyze the hartshorniana geography from the social horizon in which it was forged, the United States of America late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Starting from the original bibliographic sources relating to the issue, we show how the debates on epistemology, in the current historiography of discipline, disregarded crucial issues for the understanding of the author\'s work, the result of a lack of deepening the theoretical debate associated with political struggle between groups disputed the forefront of the discipline from the 1950s. By the hands of manuals and by a historiography that continues to narrate a stageist history with phases that succeed and advance on each other more and more approaching the geography of scientific, misconceptions are perpetuated and are part of the common sense of discipline even in the present . Among the conclusions of the paper, it is that, up to now, in terms of analysis of the work of Richard Hartshorne, the readings are either incomplete or completely misleading.

The aim of the thesis is to introduce the American process philosopher Charles Hartshorne and his philosophical theism and to relate his approach and his thoughts to the debate about the relationship of theology and philosophy. After introducing the basics of the career and work of Alfred North Whitehead, the better known representative of process thought, and then the career and achievements of Hartshorne himself, I proceed to make a survey of the main aspects of his neoclassical philosophical concept of the God-world relation. Special attention is paid to one of Hartshorne's specifics - his defense and interpretation of the ontological argument for the existence of God. I then deal with Hartshorne's attempts to engage some classical theistic concepts, namely that of Thomas Aquinas, and of the luminaries of Protestant theology, Paul Tillich and Karl Barth, into a kind of dialogue. Then I introduce briefly "process theology" and some significant examples of applying Hartshorne's ideas in theology, Christology, and moral theory. I survey some polemical reactions to process thought and to Hartshorne by German Protestant theologians and I consider the possibility of a certain kinship between Hartshorne's view of the God-world relation and the theology of nonviolence. This thesis examines Charles Hartshorne's critique of classical theism, as it relates to the subject of divine power. My specific aim is to evaluate whether Hartshorne's critique applies to Thomas Aquinas' concept of divine power. Chapter One undertakes an exposition of Thomas' conception of the power of God and its implications for the human power of free choice. Chapter Two explores Hartshorne's critique of the classical concept of God, focusing on the negative implications he draws from the classical concept of omnipotence. In Chapter Three, I apply Hartshorne's critique of classical theism to Thomas' concept of divine power, in order to judge whether Hartshorne has an accurate understanding of the classical position and whether his critique reveals serious problems in Thomas' concept of divine power. My evaluation centres around Hartshorne's objections to Thomas' claim that God possesses purely actual power, and his insistence that God's omnipotence, as construed by Thomas, robs human beings of the power of free choice. Chapter Three also compares the similarities and differences between their approaches to the knowledge of God as determined by their basic metaphysical principles and their use of analogy. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)
