Why Students Exercise Regularly: a Focus Group on the Characteristics Shared by Arizona Health Sciences Students at The University of Arizona

Palmateer, Kyle, Vande Zande, M. Alejandra, Wingersky, Sam January 2007 (has links)
Class of 2007 Abstract / Objectives: To identify the characteristics shared by Arizona Health Sciences students who exercise regularly and the effects of exercise on their lives. Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Three focus groups were held to collect data on the participants’ history and pattern of regular exercise, reasons for engaging in physical activity, educational background on the importance of physical activity, views on role models, and level of productivity. Demographic data were collected on age, gender, marital status, weight, and height. Results: The AHS students who participated in the focus groups had a history of regular exercise, often since childhood, an ability to adapt their schedules to make time for exercise, and the use of exercise as a recreational or social activity. Stress reduction and health benefits were major motivators for participating in regular physical activity. However, only about 50 percent of the participants saw themselves as potential role models for their patients. Conclusions: The training of pharmacy and public health students may need to be revisited to include the promotion of physical activity and the importance of serving as role models. Focusing on how regular physical activity reduces stress and improves health may be more successful marketing techniques, as all of the participants listed these benefits as important. Because the other reasons varied between men and women, the marketing strategies may need to focus on different approaches for each gender; for example, the appearance benefits for men and the sleep and socializing benefits for women.

Tabagismo entre acadêmicos da área de saúde da Universidade de São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto - 2009 / Tobacco smoking habits among public health students at the University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto 2009.

Santos, Fransley Lima 10 December 2010 (has links)
Smoking habits have been considered a serious public health problem by the OMS (WHO em ingles) since thousands of people die from smoking-related diseases. The aim of the current report was to evaluate pattern and prevalence of smoking among public health students at the University of São Paulo (College of Ribeirão Preto) during the 2009-2010 school years. The results were statistically elaborated by using descriptive methods. This study was conducted with 745 medicine and nursing (bachelor and graduation degrees) students who answered a questionnaire adopted by INCA and the Fagerström Teste for Nicotine Dependence. The prevalence of current smoking was 7.7% (57 students - 52.6% were male and 47.4% female), where the influence of friends (78.2%), movies, tv (10.2%) and the parents (6.1%) were the most cited reason to commence such habit. Most subjects informed that they have started smoking at the age group of 11 to 17 years old. 61.8% of the interviewed had a smoking family member (father and/or mother). Religion practice is probably a factor that prevents the tobacco addiction because 16.1% of the smokers are atheist. 79.9% of the interviewed stated that they provide information to their patients about smoking risks and assume they could be a role model for their patients (65%). In addition, 55.7% of the students believe that professionals in the public health care who smoke are less inclined to advise their patients to stop smoking. 63.4% of the students reported to be willing to quit smoking and the nicotine dependence assessed was considered lower or very lower. Smokers (86%) and non-smokers (22,8%) reported having experimented pot. A significant decrease in smoking prevalence among public health student at the University of São Paulo (College of Ribeirão Preto) was observed comparing data from a study in 1986 (that reported a smoking prevalence of 14.2%). Thus, our data corroborates the world trend decline in prevalence of smokers in public health students. However, the number of smokers in health professionals is still high. Knowledge of prevalence of smoking is needed to implement adequate institutional programs to help reduction of smokerers, especially among health professional who were supposed to be a role model to our society.

Knowledge about type 2 diabetes mellitus among public health students in Thailand

Rexhepi, Mihane, Ström Mörnås, Rebecca January 2017 (has links)
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a welfare disease increasing with such a high rate that it, in popular speech, is being called epidemic. To prevent the spread of this disease, future health care workers are in need of a deeper, science-based education. Purpose: The aim of this study is to research the knowledge about T2DM regarding risk factors, nutrition, activity and foot hygiene among public health students at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. Method: A cross-sectional study was made using a questionnaire. A convenience sampling of public health students were approached and 121 decided to participate. Results: The majority of the students knew that obesity and an unhealthy diet (containing a high amount of fat, sugar and fast food) was correlated with T2DM and associated with negative outcomes of the disease. The students were uncertain or had less knowledge that smoking is a risk factor (79%). The greater part of the participants (73%) thought that people with T2DM should let their feet air dry. 74% of the respondents underestimated the amount of time that was needed to exercise per week to achieve positive results and 63% of the students were dissatisfied with their education regarding T2DM. Conclusion: Although the students overall had good knowledge about T2DM, they also showed a lot of uncertainty and insufficient knowledge in several questions. This was especially distinguished in the questions regarding activity, foot hygiene and risk factors. Enkäter användes i denna studie.

Investigating the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Cultural Intelligence to Attitudes towards Team-Based Learning in Undergraduate Pre-health Profession Students

Harris, Kevin A 01 January 2017 (has links)
Improving patient outcomes has long been the rationale supporting calls to reform health care delivery systems and health profession education programs (Greiner, 2002; Institutes of Medicine, 2001, 2004; O’Neil & Pew Health Professions Commission, 1998). In 2003, the Institute of Medicine shared its vision statement for health professions education, asserting that “[a]ll health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches and informatics” (Knebel & Greiner, 2003, p. 3). Despite the importance placed on teamwork in health sciences education, little attention has been devoted to understanding underlying factors influencing student attitudes towards team learning (Curran, Sharpe, Forristall, & Flynn, 2008). The purpose of this study is to explore the importance of emotional and cultural intelligence in shaping pre-health students’ attitudes towards team-based learning. A non-experimental, cross-sectional study design was used employing correlational and multivariate regression analysis. Findings indicate: a) significant relationships between emotional and cultural intelligence to the value students place on group work; and, b) emotional intelligence accounts for approximately 3% of variance above and beyond the Big Five personality factors in predicting student attitudes towards group work. This study will inform interprofessional education policy and practice in two fundamental ways. First, the study provides insight on the importance of non-academic factors in shaping students’ attitudes towards team-based learning. Secondly, increasing understanding of emotional and cultural intelligence in early stagse of a student’s development influences their preparation for health professions careers.

Potrebno je dalje ispitivati modele koji bi bili efektivni u transformaciji psihosomatskog statusa učenika i optimizaciji &scaron;kolske klime.</p> / <p>In order to provide an environment that enhances health and healthy choices, significant research efforts are put in identifying effective models of children&rsquo;s wellbeing and physical activity promotion while in school.<br />Bearing in mind an existing research gap, the study was conducted with an aim to examine effects that two innovative models of recess have on the psycho-somatic status of students and violence in school.<br />In first intervention group (I1), participants were provided with exercise equipment during recess, in the second intervention group (I2) structured exercise program was delivered every day, while participants from the control group (C) have spent recess on their own. The interventions took two months.<br />Group affiliation (I1, I2, C) was the independent variable, and the dependent variables were: students&rsquo; physical activity during recess, anthropometric and motor characteristics, conative characteristics (self-evaluations, optimism), health status (school absences because of medical reasons), school violence (students being perpetrators/victims). Data was gathered by anthropometry, motor testing, questionnaires (scales), observation and school document analysis. The data was analyzed by proper statistical procedures.<br />The results show that different recess models may have different effects on different aspects of students&rsquo; psycho-somatic status and school violence. Further examination of models effective in the transformation of the psycho-somatic status of students and optimization of school climate is needed.</p>
