Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the way in which the construction of landscape interacts
with the development of identity in Tikoes by Henk van Woerden. Taking the
metaphor of traveling in Tikoes as vantage point, the coterminous
development of the South African landscape and the characters' identities are
explored.
The study is placed in a theoretical framework by defining space, landscape
and place, with specific reference to the interaction of landscape and identity,
especially as portrayed in migrant literature. The difference between
observation of space and the experiencing of landscape and place out of
space through cultural processes are emphasized. It is postulated that these
processes not only lead to the development of landscape and place out of
space, but also contributes to the development of the characters' identities.
Through an in-depth study of Tikoes, it is established that landscape and
identity not only develop coterminously in this novel, but that these processes
of development are actually interdependent.
Tikoes, apparently a mere story about the journey of two lovers, is well
constructed regarding the integration of themes and motives, which
culminates in the cardinal interaction between observation and experience.
The theme postulated by the motto is thus reflected in the structure of the
novel: Let shallow people call me frivolous, when it comes to the point I have
always been conscientiously precise.

Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to investigate Henk: van Woerden's Een mond vol glas (1998) (A
Mouthful of glass (2000) translated by Dan Jacobson) as a contribution to the creation of
a multi-voiced South African history. Een mond vol glas clearly contributes to such a
project, because it recognises the histories of the Dutch immigrants, die Cape Muslims
and especially the Cape "Coloured" community through the figure of Demitrios
Tsafendas, better known as the murderer of Hendrik Verwoerd. The key concepts in this
study are cultural diversity and a processing of the trauma caused by apartheid.
Postcolonial theory will be used to explain cultural diversity as the result of transference
and to contextualize the growing interest in the transnational histories of migrants in
literature. Een mond vol glas cannot easily be described according to one specific genre
or classification. This study will make use of the description "literature produced in a
context of cultural diversity" to show the problematic nature of two classifications of Een
mond vol glas that is currently being used. Processing the trauma caused by apartheid in
literature, comes down to a resistance to the isolating force of trauma. This study uses
the trauma theory of Judith Herman which states that the healing process or the
processing of traumatic experiences can only take place in the sharing of people's stories
in the connectedness with others. In South Africa this process begins to take place in a
society where cultural multi-voicedness has become possible. In the end I will conclude
that Een mond vol glas proves to be a reconstruction of history that is multi-voiced,
making this part of South African history accessible for a larger audience.

Compositional Devices of Willem Pijper (1894-1947) and Henk Badings (b. 1907) in Two Selected Works, Pijper's "Sonata per Flauto e Pianoforte" (1925) and Badings' "Concerto for Flute and Wind Symphony Orchestra" (1963), a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of Bach, Vivaldi, Dahl, Françaix, and OthersClardy, Mary Karen 12 1900 (has links)
Substantial contributions to flute literature of the twentieth century were made by the Dutch composers Willem Pijper (1894-1947) and Henk Badings (b. 1907) in the Sonata per Flauto e Pianoforte (1925) and the Concerto for Flute and Wind Symphony Orchestra (1963), respectively. This paper is an examination of the compositional devices employed by Pijper and Badings in these two selected works, with a discussion of the elements of form, tonal language, rhythm, motivic usage, orchestration, and innovative flute techniques. Emphasis on Pijper as teacher and mentor to a generation of Dutch composers, including Badings, gives the basis for a comparison of the Sonata and the Concerto.

The outcome of intracranial subdural empyema at Steve Biko Academic Hospital : retrospective studyThobejane, Emmanuel Kgoro 04 October 2012 (has links)
Objectives: Intracranial subdural empyema (ICSDE) can be a devastating condition, with a sequelae ranging from epilepsy, focal deficits to death. Factors affecting the outcome in subdural empyema range from level of consciousness, the extend of subdural pus at the time of diagnosis and the type of surgical procedure performed. Previous studies have conflicting results of unfavourable prognostic factors associated with ICSDE. The outcome of this condition at Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) is reported, as well as factors influencing the outcome. Methods: A retrospective analysis of all the patients admitted at neurosurgery unit of SBAH during 2006 – 2010 period with confirmed subdural empyema on brain CT scan and at surgery. Data sheet was used to collect all clinical information from patients’ records. Glasgow Outcome Scale and Henk W. Mauser grading were used to report on the outcome. Results: A total of 34 patients (20 males and 14 females) with mean age of 16.1 years were admitted with a diagnosis of ICSDE. The common presenting features were headache (58.8%), fever and seizures (47.0% each). Over 61% of patients had hemiplegia at presentation. CT scan confirmed subdural collections with 70.6% over the convexity, 23.5% at the convexity and parafalx and only 5.9% had bilateral collections. Complicated paranasal sinusitis was the origin of infection in 82.3%, followed by meningitis with 8.8%. Burr hole washout was done in 52.9% of patients, while 38.2% had burr holes with drains in situ and 8.8% had craniotomy to evacuate the subdural pus. All the patients were given empiric triple antibiotic therapy. Streptococci species were the most cultured organisms in the 19 (56.0%) patients who had positive cultures, however 15 (44.0%) patients had negative cultures. Resistance to penicillin was noted in 5.0% of cases only. Sixty-five percent of patients had good outcome with no seizures nor neurological deficits. The overall mortality was 15.0% in this study, with none from patients who had craniotomy. Conclusion: Clinical presenting features and organisms cultured seems to be the same internationally, particularly those due to complicated sinusitis. Empiric triple antibiotic therapy of 3rd generation cephalosporin plus vancomycin plus metronidazole is still relevant at SBAH. Factors associated with favourable outcome were ages between 11 and 20 years, and craniotomy as the surgical procedure of choice. / Dissertation (MMEd)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Neurology / Unrestricted

The domestic is the elite : A quantitative content analysis on how news are valued in four national Costa Rican newspapersStjärnlöv, Liv January 2015 (has links)
My study has questioned recognized factors of news valuation in the context of Costa Rican newspapers, with the aim at getting greater understanding in how news are valued in Costa Rican newspapers and what factors contribute to making an event the main article of an issue. My research therefore is a snapshot at how the news valuation process is conducted in Costa Rica at the moment. I furthermore went on to do a quantitative content analysis containing five theories of factors of news valuation, that I have theorised myself as a result of my research containing recognized factors of news valuation. The data has been selected through a random selection process, and then collected via the national library in San José, Costa Rica. I then went on to carry through a quantitative content analysis, containing 46 variables from recognized factors of news valuation and an additional five variables from my own theories, on the selected samples. The variables in my analysis to a great extent tried questioning the theories of Judy McGregor, Henk Prakke, Håkan Hvitfelt and Galtung and Ruge. The results show that some of the theories created by mentioned scholar do apply in the news valuation process in Costa Rican newspapers. It furthermore show that some factors, mentioned by the same scholar, to have great impact in the news valuation process does not at all impact the news value of an event in Costa Rican newspapers. This study shows that there is cultural and geographical differences in how events are valued as newsworthy or not, and that the factors that are acknowledged as determining of news value in one region or country, may in fact not at all apply in another part of the world. The results of my own theories show that there are differences in what factors that affect the news valuation process. My theories state that there are other factors that affect news values and that there can be opposing factors depending on in what country/region/journalistic area the news are valued.

Min bronne oor Temmingh is beskikbaar. ENGLISH : Hendrik (“Henk”) Temmingh can be regarded as one of South Africa’s leading organ composers. He showed versatility and established himself as a significant figure in the field of musicology, improvisation and organ music. The aim of the mini-dissertation is to show how Temmingh’s oeuvre justifies a complete catalogue of the organ works, and to compile such a document. Putting together an accurate biography of the composer, will fill another gap. A survey of South African organ music and composers indicate how, where and to what extent Temmingh functions as a true South African composer, although he was born in the Netherlands. Additional information, especially new data regarding South African organ composers such as dates of birth and death, is mentioned in the document. South African composers are divided into three groups according to origin and nationality. Own terminology is allocated to these. Few sources concerning Temmingh are available. Therefore this mini-dissertation was mainly compiled with the help of the composer. The scarcity of enough literature on South African organ music and composers was a challenge for the writer. An immediate summary of Temmingh’s contribution as an organ composer can be obtained with the help of the chronological catalogue of Temmingh’s organ works. This will help music libraries and organists to supplement their incomplete collections. Apart from this, newly allocated catalogue numbers will give an indication of where the works concerned fit in chronologically in Temmingh’s oeuvre. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Music / unrestricted
