Deep Placement Gel Bank as an Improved Oil Recovery Process: Modeling, Economic Analysis and Comparison to Polymer Flooding

Seyidov, Murad 2010 May 1900 (has links)
Many attempts have been made to control water conformance. It is very costly to produce, treat and dispose of water, and produced water represents the largest waste stream associated with oil and gas production. The production of large amounts of water results in: (a) the need for more complex water?oil separation; (b) corrosion of wellbore and other equipment; (c) a rapid decline in hydrocarbon production rate and ultimate recovery; and (d) consequently, premature abandonment of a well or field, leaving considerable hydrocarbons unproduced. Sometimes water production results from heterogeneities in the horizontal direction, which leads to uneven movement of the flood front and subsequent early breakthrough of water from high permeability layers. This problem is exacerbated if there is (vertical) hydraulic communication between layers so that crossflow can occur. One of the novel technologies in chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a gel type called deep diverting gel (DDG), which describes material that functions by plugging thief zones deep from the well where they were being injected. To evaluate the performance of this new treatment method, we will (1) model the treatment methods, (2) conduct economic analysis, and (3) compare different EOR methods. We have conducted relevant literature review about the development, design, modeling and economics of the enhanced oil recovery methods. Schlumberger's Eclipse simulator software has been used for modeling purposes. Modeling runs have demonstrated that placement of a DDG in a high permeability zone provided a blockage that diverted water into lower permeability areas, thus increasing the sweep of target zones. Research results demonstrated that, although higher recovery can be achieved with a polymer flood, the combination of delayed production response and large polymer amounts cause such projects to be less economically favorable than deep gel placement treatments. From results of several sensitivity runs, it can be concluded that plug size and oil viscosity are two determining factors in the efficiency of DDG treatments. For the assumed case, economic analysis demonstrated that DDG has the most positive net present value (NPV), with polymer flooding second and simply continuing the waterflood to its economic limit the least positive NPV.

Estudo teórico e experimental em escala reduzida de uma barreira vertical de alta permeabilidade para encapsulamento de áreas contaminadas em aquíferos / Theoretical and small-scale experimental study of a high permeability vertical barrier to encapsulate contaminated areas in aquifers

Ana Claudia Emerenciano Guedes 23 May 2018 (has links)
The concern about groundwater contamination is mainly related to unconfined aquifers, especially in the cases where the water table is shallow. Therefore, in order to prevent the groundwater lateral flow through landfills, this research evaluates – theoretically and experimentally – an alternative encapsulation technique, which consists in a vertical barrier of high permeability. An analytical solution was developed to model the flow for a cylindrical barrier installed around a landfill located below the groundwater table, in a field of uniform flow, where each domain (aquifer, barrier and encapsulated area) has a different hydraulic conductivity. The results from the theoretical study show that in situations where the landfill has a hydraulic conductivity higher than the aquifer, the high permeability barrier is more efficient. In contrast, in the cases where the landfill has a hydraulic conductivity lower than the aquifer, the lw permeability barrier is a more suitable technique. From the small-scale experiment, it is possible to conclude that the permeable barrier is an efficient encapsulation technique to prevent the advective transport through a certain region. According to the results, the fluid mean velocity at the encapsulated area is considerably lower than the aquifer mean velocity. Comparing to the low permeability barrier, the advantage of the high permeability barrier is that its backfill material is less sensitive to defects, resulting in a better long-term performance.

Simple Models for Underdamped Slug Tests in High Permeability Aquifers

Marquez, Maria E 29 June 2016 (has links)
Accurate hydraulic conductivity values are necessary for understanding groundwater flow. Methods for estimating hydraulic conductivity show limitations because measured values vary several orders of magnitude in high permeability aquifers. Slug tests, while cost and time efficient, result in values lower than expected. It is proposed that underdamped behavior of water in a well is similar to mass on a damped spring; hence, models constructed to simulate behavior independent of aquifer effects might replicate some tests. The Poiseuille and Darcy-Weisbach models, and extensions of these models considering entry/exit effects, are applied to an aquifer-free laboratory test, and real wells. Aquifer-free laboratory tests are modeled well using both Poiseuille and Darcy-Weisbach models with entry/exit effects. The Poiseuille model for wells does not agree with observed data, possibly because of high Reynolds numbers. The Darcy-Weisbach model does agree with well data significantly better, although the friction factor relies on a single Reynolds number.

[en] FRACTURE PARAMETERS ESTIMATION THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE PRESSURE CURVE DURING FRACTURING OF HIGH PERMEABILITY FORMATION / [pt] ANÁLISE DA CURVA DE PRESSÃO DO FRATURAMENTO DE FORMAÇÕES DE ALTA PERMEABILIDADE PARA ESTIMATIVA DOS PARÂMETROS DA FRATURA

CECILIA TOLEDO DE AZEVEDO 01 August 2018 (has links)
[en] Valkó and Oligney developed a model to estimate fracture evolution using a direct interpretation of the measured bottom hole pressure curve during a fracpack operation. The only input data needed to use the model are the usual records of the job, available during and after the operation. Considering radial fracture geometry and using simplified equations of flow and geomechanics, the model estimates a packing radius of the fracture using the slope of the increasing bottom hole pressure curve during the tip screenout period. In this work, Valkó and Oligney method is enhanced with the inclusion of state equations for the fracture growth and for the leakoff process in order to improve the model, but still maintaining minimum input data. The method is also extended to other two-dimensional fracture geometries, PKN and KGD. To apply the enhanced method, eight fracpack operation data were used. The results obtained are fracture propagation, width growth and fluid efficiency in time as well as the final proppant distribution in the fracture. To validate these results, this work used two commercial simulators with three-dimensional models. The case studies show that the modifications done to Valkó and Oligney method approximate the two-dimensional model results to the ones obtained using the commercial simulators with threedimensional models. Furthermore, the comparison between the application of the model for each fracture geometry and the commercial simulators results confirmed the expected tendency for the fracture geometry during a fracpack operation, which is a radial fracture.

Purification sanguine au cours du choc septique / Blood purification for septic shock

Rimmelé, Thomas 23 June 2010 (has links)
Extracorporeal blood purification therapies are now being proposed in order to improve septic shock outcomes. These therapies work based on immunomodulation of the host inflammatory response, obtained by non selectively removing inflammatory mediators. We report data from several different studies performed in vitro, in animals and in human beings, assessing various blood purification therapies which include high-volume hemofiltration, cascade hemofiltration, high-adsorption hemofiltration, coupled plasma filtration adsorption, hemoadsorption and high-permeability hemodialysis. This translational research work shows that blood purification therapies are capable of removing not only the inflammatory mediators but also the endotoxins as far as highadsorptionhemofiltration and hemoadsorption are concerned. We demonstrate technical feasibility, safety and advantages of cascade hemofiltration and continuous high-permeability hemodialysis. The beneficial hemodynamic effects related to these blood purification techniques are also highlighted. For future research, optimization of the most efficient techniques is warranted, takinginto account of their respective advantages and drawbacks. Regarding pathophysiology, the direct effect of these therapies on leukocyte function is subject to further investigation. To date, convection, diffusion and adsorption should not be viewed in opposition but rather, seen as complementary mechanisms.
