Considering the complexity of flows and the variety of processes that are routinely developed in a hospital, in what ways skyscraper buildings began to affect both the architectural design and the use management of these buildings? This dissertation aims to contribute to better understanding this issue through a referenced and comparative study on three significant cases of vertical hospitals, two in São Paulo and one in London. The cases were select from a large list of works studied, and given a set of objective criteria, defined by the survey.

Spaces Of Communication In High-rise Residential Buildings

Engur, Ozge 01 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of thesis is to evaluate criticisms directed to high-rise buildings which have firstly used for residential purposes with modernism in terms of their hindering social contact, and to explain in what kind of spaces the residents of high-rise building sustain their social and environmental contacts. This form was aimed to be used as the building type of high-rise, low density urban form in CIAM meeting for decreasing health problems created by industrialization on individuals. In contrast, Team 10 criticized high-rise residential buildings by propounding disposal of street and not gathering people by using green areas. They propounded the urban element which is low-rise spreading in horizontal as the form of increment of social connection. In this study, principally diversified existence of social and environmental communication space are advocated in every urban environment depending on distinctive spatial organizations. Matrix study was made depending on height, density and coverage as three inputs of residential types, and the idea defended was tried to be proven. Communication spaces in high-rise residential buildings were analyzed in urban design and architecture scales. For this purpose, urban design scaled study was analyzed in the frame of territoriality which is related to the main topic of the thesis as residential area, and public and private space continuity types came into prominence. Architecture spaces constituting social and environmental contiguity spaces in high-rise residences were discussed in the frame of contemporary buildings and utopias. The explanation of diversified connection spaces in high-rise residential blocks will be hold.

Leveraging radio frequency technology identification for productivity analysis in high-rise construction

Sedehi, Arya John 12 April 2010 (has links)
Until recent developments, labor productivity had been analyzed manually requiring time-consuming work and the possibility of human error. Past research has shown the multitude of benefits obtained from implementing radio frequency identification technology within various construction sites including asset tracking, inventory management, and on-site security upgrades. Additional construction improvements can be identified in terms of productivity analysis of work crews, material transport, and the overall approach to a project to determine whether the construction process is operating at maximum efficiency or can be adjusted to improve its effectiveness. This paper presents the results of implementing radio-frequency identification technology and provides a study of labor productivity analysis for a window replacement project on a high-rise construction site. This extensive study tracks the efficiency of a buck hoist worker and material lift system for transportation and illustrates the applicability of the technology despite the presence of numerous signal impeding obstacles located throughout the site. These issues are resolved with an effective automated location and time tracking system that work in both an indoor and outdoor environment simultaneously with a data recording software and database. The in-house development of the database allows for timely information retrieval of various items of interest in this study and requires less The experimental results show that RFID technology has the capacity to work and produce useful data for labor productivity purposes in an ever-changing construction environment. The research further recognizes relevant information regarding system optimization and worker feedback for future use.

Analyse et prévision des caractéristiques du pompage du béton auto-plaçant à haute résistance

Khatib, Rami January 2013 (has links)
Modern construction practices require proper knowledge to predict concrete pumping pressure, especially in high-volume and high-rise applications. Despite the progress made over the last decades, the spread of concrete pumping to high-rise construction has been hampered by the lack of standardized operating procedures and performance criteria. By and large, the guidelines available today focus predominantly on pumping Conventional Vibrated Concrete (CVC), while ambiguity still surrounds pumping Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) and other types of Highly-Workable Concrete (HWC). This PhD dissertation focuses on the fundamental principles relevant to the flow of high-strength SCC in pumping pipes, and it aims to develop methods to predict and reduce the required pumping pressure. The flow pattern of SCC in pipes is analytically investigated, providing a numerical approach to predict the pumping pressure based on the properties of both concrete and the lubrication layer, the pipe diameter, and the flow rate. The analytical results are further validated through full-scale pumping tests executed at the laboratory of the Université de Sherbrooke. Through this phase 26 optimal concrete mixtures were pumped in a 30-m pumping circuit to investigate the interactions between the concrete properties and pressure loss. The same tests are also employed to empirically correlate pressure loss with rheological and tribological properties of concrete at different flow rates. The resulting correlations furnish instrumental models capable of computing pressure loss for a wide range of concrete properties. In another application, the experimental results are analyzed to identify the influence of pumping on concrete properties with time. Full-scale pumping results are statistically analyzed in order to establish a quantitative description of the most influential parameters governing the concrete flow in pipes. As a result, concrete pipe flow is statically modeled, allowing the computation of pressure loss at different flow rates based on the the rheological and tribological properties of the concrete and the pipe diameter. Another statistical model is derived to calculate the pressure loss as a function of the V-funnel flow time, granting the advantage of predicting the pressure loss on job sites without the need for complex rheological and tribological measurements. In light of the research findings of the previous phases, a new simple test method called the pipe flow test (PFT) is developed in the context of this research, specifically for predicting pipe flow pressure loss. With preceding research phases as insights, the final stage of this project is directed toward mix design optimization faced with the challenge of reducing the pumping pressure and meeting the strength requirements of high-strength SCC. Ultimately, the research findings emanating from this investigation provide practical guidelines and conclusive models to predict and reduce pumping pressure for a wide scope of concrete mixtures and pipe diameters.

Development of Novel Technologies for Improved Natural Illumination of High Rise Office Buildings

Greenup, Phillip John January 2004 (has links)
Effective daylighting can substantially reduce the energy use and greenhouse gas emissions of commercial buildings. Daylight is also healthy for building occupants, and contributes to occupant satisfaction. When productivity improvements are considered, effective daylighting is also highly attractive financially. However, successful daylighting of sub-tropical buildings is a very difficult task, due to high direct irradiances and excessive solar shading. A device was created that combined effective solar shading and efficient daylight redirection. The micro-light guiding shade panel achieves all objectives of an optimal daylighting device placed on the façade of a sub-tropical, high rise office building. Its design is based on the principles of non-imaging optics. This provides highly efficient designs offering control over delivered illumination, within the constraints of the second law of thermodynamics. Micro-light guiding shade panels were constructed and installed on a test building. The tested devices delivered daylight deep into the building under all conditions. Some glare was experienced with a poorly chosen translucent material. Glare was eliminated by replacing this material. Construction of the panels could be improved by application of mass-manufacturing techniques including metal pressing. For the micro-light guiding shade panel to be utilised to its full potential, building designers must understand its impact on building performance early in the design process. Thus, the device must be modelled with lighting simulation software currently in use by building design firms. The device was successfully modelled by the RADIANCE lighting simulator. RADIANCE predictions compared well with measurements, providing bias generally less than 10%. Simulations greatly aided further development of the micro-light guiding shade panel. Several new RADIANCE algorithms were developed to improve daylight simulation in general.

Projektová dokumentace účelové komunikace včetně připojení na silnici III. třídy. / The project documentation of a tertiary road including an attachment to the 3rd class road

STROPKOVÁ, Jana January 2008 (has links)
The aim of my graduation theses is to project a rural road in two variations. The first variation was solved in an existing position. Rural roads are one of the most important parts of complex land consolidation. Road network create an organization of land resources. In other part they ensure an entrance to agricultural holdings. They can perform for example a function of soil protection from erosion and tourist function. Rural roads have to be harmoniously integrated into a landscape. The basis for my project is map with ratio scale 1:5 000. I projected a location of a rural road into a map at first. Then I created a general longitudinal profile for both variations. For the second variation was created also a detailed longitudinal profile. I projected a composition of a construction of a road, what is shown in a cross section. Rural roads have to be projected to minimalize earthmoving, because it causes high costs. Another aspect of projecting rural roads is, that they have to be integrated into a landscape.

Operação urbana: a inadequação do instrumento para a promoção de áreas em declínio / High-rise housing from the 1930s to the 1980s in the city of São Paulo. Research about modernist architects contribution to the teme. Case-studies

Maria do Carmo Vilariño 26 February 2007 (has links)
This doctorate thesis analyses the urban operation tool, by examining its effects in four áreas under its jurisdiction in the city of Sao Paulo, where it can be observed different results in the promotion of public-private partnerships. This work searches to prove the thesis that this urban development control is inadequate to boost urban declining areas by investigating this different results and evaluating the possibilities and the limits of this mecanism in partnership promotion. The hipothesis is that this instrument, despite of this flexibility, derives from others which objective was to regulate a growing real state market demand in a previous period of great population growth and economic expansion. In an economic crisis and contraction situation, it reveals to be inadequate to reheat the real estate market in urban declining areas.
