Perceptions and experiences of health care workers on the use of electronic medical records at two health centres in Livingstone, Zambia

Moomba, Kaala January 2017 (has links)
Magister Commercii (Information Management) - MCom(IM) / Health information systems (HIS) have much to offer in managing healthcare costs and in improving the quality of care for patients. However, the adoption of HIS can cause problems to health professionals in terms of efficiency as well as to the entire health organization in terms of acceptability and adaptability. The development of a national Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policy in Zambia was initiated in 2001 through an extensive consultation process which involved academics and civil society organizations. The aim of using ICT is to improve the quality of health service delivery at local levels. Maramba and Mahatma Gandhi Clinics are the largest primary health care (PHC) clinics in Livingstone and have been prioritized for the implementation of an electronic medical record (EMR) system. The current study explored health care workers' perceptions and experiences of the use of ICTbased EMR and factors that could determine acceptability of EMR at Maramba and Mahatma Gandhi clinics to feed into future program improvement.

The Journey from Innocence to Experience : Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials as a female Bildungsroman

Nordlén, Lisa January 2009 (has links)
In this essay the main aim is to consider Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials with its female protagonist as a Bildungsroman. The principal source of the study is Jerome Buckley’s Season of Youth – The Bildungsroman from Dickens to Golding. Buckely’s presentation of the significant characteristics of the Bildungsroman will be applied to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials in order to explore if these characteristics are present, modified or not, in the trilogy.   The second aim is to investigate how His Dark Materials relates to the patterns of the hero’s journey. In order to approach this question, Joseph Campbell’s work The Hero with a Thousand Faces is applied as a main source.    Since most material concerning both the Bildungsroman and the hero’s journey are from a male point of view and concern males, the female perspective will be represented by Susan Fraiman and Linda Wagner who both write about females and the bildung narrative.   In the section called The Story of Lyra, the trilogy is summarized briefly in order to give the reader a chance to understand what the trilogy is about. In the conclusion, Lyra’s development and (hero)-journey are discussed.     The final claim of the study is that His Dark Materials can be considered a Bildungsroman and the patterns of the hero journey are found in the story about Lyra, but with some differences from her male counterparts.

Electronic patient record (EPR) system in South Africa : information, storage, retrieval and share amongst clinicians

Tokosi, Temitope Oluwaseyi January 2016 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / A phenomenological philosophy underlies this research study which attempts to understand clinicians’ perception and understanding of an electronic patient record (EPR) system currently operational at a hospital in the Western Cape Province in South Africa (SA). Healthcare is a human right, thus patient records contain critical data and mostly paper-based in many SA hospitals. Clinicians are the EPR primary users and their attitude in its use is important for its success. This study explores, identifies and determines clinicians’ cognitive attributes towards EPR with a technology use framework developed. An initial quantitative approach was applied but unsuccessful due to low sample size. A pilot study was then conducted using 11 respondents. Purposive sampling was first initiated then snowball introduced later to improve the sample size qualitatively. Interviews were administered to 15 clinicians and tape recorded. Narrative content analysis was used as the preferred analysis technique because of the advantage of gaining direct information from study participants, unobtrusive and a nonreactive way to study the phenomenon of interest. Research findings tested 12 propositions and found high impact relationships between attitude (ATT) and each listed theme namely: perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), complexity (COM), facilitating condition (FC), use behaviour (USE). Use behaviour had high impact relationships with storage (STO) and retrieval (RET). There were moderate impact relationships between PU and USE; PEOU and PU; RA and ATT; job fit (JF) and ATT; USE and share (SHA). The implication here is that any EPR system to be implemented should be tested using this framework to ascertain its usefulness and fit with a hospital's objectives and users expectations. By so doing, anticipated problems can be mitigated against and resolved before implementation. The study contributes to the information system (IS) body of knowledge through the technology use framework. The framework is for adoption by hospital management and its use by clinicians where EPR is operational. Traditional IS frameworks can be adopted for hospitals about to implement EPR because of the relevance of the "intent to use" theme.

Jesus the Samaritan : ethnic labeling in the Gospel of John

Penwell, Stewart K. January 2016 (has links)
This thesis will answer, “How do ethnic labels function in the Gospel of John?” In order to answer this question properly, this thesis draws on social-scientific theories on ethnic groups, deviancy, and labeling. The primary examples of ethnic labeling for this thesis are John 4:9 and 8:48. In each instance, members from “the Jews” (ʼΙουδαῖοι) and “Samaritans” label Jesus as a member of each other’s group. The Gospel of John’s dual ethnic labeling of Jesus participates in a history of discourse between “the Jews” and “Samaritans.” Both people groups adhere to an “us” versus “them” mentality because they both identify themselves as Israelites while rejecting the other group’s claim to that identity. The parameters of the discourse are determined by not only how each ethnic group identifies themselves but particularly how they construct the category for the other’s group. Once the parameters of discourse are in place, then we can address the function of ethnic labels in the Gospel of John. On both occasions Jesus is labeled because he deviates from what are deemed to be acceptable practices as a member of “the Jews.” The function of Jesus’s dual ethnic labeling in the Gospel of John is to establish a new pattern of practices and categories for the “children of God” who are a trans-ethnic group united as a fictive-kinship and who are embedded within the Judean ethnic group’s culture and traditions. The Johannine Jesus is portrayed as “the Jews’” Messiah (1:45; 20:31), who brings “salvation from the Jews” (4:22), and who is “the savior of the world” (4:42). The Gospel of John presents Jesus as broadening the more restrictive boundaries within “his own people” (1:11) in order to “draw all people to myself” (12:32).

Velička, Tomáš January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this work was the evaluation of some statistic indicators from the data obtained from the Health Informatic System Clinicom. The data used in this informatic system are administrated by the database system Caché. The data from the database which is administrated by Departement of Biomedical Engineering in Brno, have been also used. Data mentioned in this work were mined from the database by SQL queries. The statistic indicators obtained this way were needed to be presented on internet. The user interface for this presentation was designed and realized in programming language CSP. The resulting statistic indicators were split up into 3 basic groups: Hospitalization, Mandatory reporting and Medicament requirement. Besides the statistic indicators some pacients‘ data and the graphs of results are shown in the user interface. The part which has also been used in this work is the concept of the online form for reporting of cancers.

Joseph Smith's View of His Own Calling

Boyle, Tucker John 12 July 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The Prophet Joseph Smith stood in a unique position as the leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held positions of translator, prophet, seer and revelator. He was taught the responsibilities of his calling as he translated ancient scripture - the Book of Mormon and the Bible. He was further instructed concerning his calling as he received revelations contained in the Doctrine and Covenants. This study examines scriptural passages that surely influenced the Prophet's understanding of his own calling. It then illustrates Joseph Smith's view of his calling as evidenced by statements in his writings and discourses. It examines what he understood to be his duties in his position as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and head of the dispensation of the fullness of times.

OPTIMERING AV EN INDIREKT ELISA FÖR DETEKTION AV AUTOANTIKROPPAR VID JUVENIL IDIOPATISK ARTRIT / OPTIMIZATION OF AN INDIRECT ELISA FOR THE DETECTION OF AUTOANTIBODIES IN JUVENILE IDIOPATHIC ARTHRITIS

Friberg, Viktor January 2023 (has links)
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an autoimmune rheumatic disease that affects children before the age of 16. The most common variant is oligoarticular JIA, which means it affects two to four joints with symptoms such as swelling, tenderness, stiffness, redness, or reduced mobility. Oligoarticular JIA is also associated with uveitis, an autoimmune eye disease which damage eyesight. The disease is currently poorly understood, and research is needed to identify markers that can be used for diagnostics. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a very common method in healthcare laboratory work to examine patients' serum and identify specific markers that indicate disease. An ELISA method can be performed in different ways depending on whether it is looking for antigen or antibodies. The aim of this study was to optimize an indirect ELISA for detection of autoantibodies and conduct a method comparison with an already well established bead-based autoantibody array method. The study included 14 sera samples from different patients and used recombinantly produced protein epitope signature tag (PrEST) antigens to identify autoantibodies. PrEST antigens consist of a human variable protein segment and a protein tag consisting of albumin binding protein (ABP) with an N-terminal HIS-tag (His6ABP). To prevent non-specific binding to the His6ABP portion of the PrEST antigens, His6ABP were recombinantly produced and used for pre-absorption of serum before being examined by ELISA. When the result was interpreted binary, great similarity could be seen between the two different methods for all PrEST antigens examined, which calls for further exploring of the method. The result also showed that the His6ABP part could possibly cause cross-reactivity, which is interesting but doesn’t affect the validity of the method.
