A Construção da História em Serena, de Ian McEwan / The construction of history in Sweet Tooth, by Ian McEwan

Déborah Moreira Ramos 31 March 2015 (has links)
This dissertation constitutes a reflection about the social, political and cultural situation of England in the 70s, especially in the years of 1972 and 1973, as described in the novel Sweet Tooth, by Ian McEwan. The main objective of this research is to present how the historical moment mentioned above is narrated in the fictional discourse, from the perspective of the character, in comparison with the historical discourse and from a selection of sources, which narrate the history of England in the context of the Cold War, the terrorist attacks of the IRA and the functioning of the English domestic Secret Service, called MI5.

In Search of a Childhood Landscape : Historical Narratives From a Queensland Kindergarten 1940-1965

Gahan, Deborah January 2005 (has links)
This dissertation details the study of the influences of historical discourses of early childhood on the recalled experiences of children, parents and teachers in a Queensland kindergarten between 1940 and 1965. The study investigates the interweaving of discourses of childhood and recounted experiences of kindergarten, drawing on the view that "different discursive practices produce different childhoods, each and all of which are 'real' within their own regime of truth" (James & Prout, 1997, p.26). The study builds a case for using an interpretive/constructionist historical approach to reframe the recounted narratives of those present in an historical kindergarten landscape, particularly the narratives of those who were children in that landscape. To date, historical studies of early childhood education in Australia have largely focused on "big picture" issues of policy, practice and training, rather than on investigating and documenting the lived experiences of children and adults in particular early childhood contexts and historical eras. In contrast, this study takes a micro-history approach, focusing on one early childhood setting in a way that Mills & Mills (2000, p.165) argue enables the "complexity and richness of the big picture to be understood". Reiger (1993) suggests that growing interest in the social construction of childhood has increased awareness of "the agency of children as contributors to interpretations ... of their development" (p.4).While participants in my study look back on childhoods lived in a past era, their interpretations and feelings about events and practices that they observed and experienced as children at kindergarten provide a valuable perspective on the discourses which framed their childhoods. Findings from this study have the potential to broaden understandings of the impact on children of pedagogical approaches to early childhood education, and deepen awareness of the meaning of childhood at particular points in time.

[en] LITERATURE, HISTORY AND ALEXANDRE HERCULANOS LEGENDS E NARRATIVES / [pt] LITERATURA, HISTÓRIA E LENDAS E NARRATIVAS DE ALEXANDRE HERCULANO

CARLOS ROBERTO PIRES CAMPOS 29 July 2003 (has links)
[en] The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the historical short stories in Lendas e Narrativas, so as to demonstrate, from both historical and fictional points of view, Herculanos attempt to change the Portuguese medieval period into a cultural inheritance, following the romantic artistic project. The second objective is to capture the romantic view of the author, who looked back to medieval times, in order to build a Portuguese cultural identity. The investigation is divided into six chapters, each one emphasizing the function that historical discourse represents in Herculanos fiction. In the light of contemporary theories, the seven narratives are analysed through the discussion of the plots (intrigues), to detect the peculiarities of each one. The emphasis is on the dialogue established between the discourses of Literature and History, within the texts, at the moment of creation. In broad terms, the research concludes that in Lendas e Narrativas the author intended to keep the memory of intense experiences, involving both the Iberian traditions and the transformation of these traditions, which assume the role of producer of new elements. This experience constructs the identity of the basic characteristics of nineteenth century Portuguese literature and even some characteristics of literature in the following century. Reflecting on the question of literary memory in Lendas e Narrativas thus demands the recognition that literary production is a system of dialogues, exchanges and appropriations that are activated by a play of interactive forces. The diversity of characters in the book makes it an intricate weave of historical fiction in the tradition of Walter Scott. The present study intends to contribute to the recognition of this essential work in Portuguese Romanticism and, perhaps ambitiously, to open up perspectives for new research. This continuous movement of interpreting history, renewing its significance, and providing it with different interpretations is a pathway to the discovery of fascinating new readings.

Jahrhundert n.Chr.

Walter, Justine 22 June 2017 (has links)
Even today, it is impossible to precisely predict earthquakes. That is why, just like in the distant past, earthquakes present a special challenge for any society that is struck by them. In order to return to normality, it is necessary to develop mental and practical ways of coping with the events and their effects. It can be observed that these strategies differ substantially between different cultures and different historical periods. This dissertation investigates the perceptions and interpretations of, as well as the practical measures of coping with earthquakes that are recorded in Greek, Latin and early Chinese sources by using the method of historical discourse analysis.

Historie, fikce a ideologie: analýza románu Salaì má pochyby / History, Fiction and Ideology: Analysis of the Novel "The doubts of Salai"

Švantner, Michal January 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the historical novel The Doubts of Salaí in terms of purpose, which the authors have clearly declared in the study attached to the novel. This purpose is both to ridicule the excessive confidence in the pulp and obvious fakes, and literary demythologization of myths - associated primarily with the Pope Alexander VI., Leonardo da Vinci, renaissance humanists or Tacit's Germania - which have settled in the historical discourse. Thus the thesis, through the narratological analysis, examines the procedures that are used within these purposes, and notes the implications for theories of the historical and literary discourses relationship. It also shows that in the final study the authors perpetrate historical objectivism and do not reflect the literariness of their own text. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

The Dutch state’s apology for its role in the slavery past : Dominant discourses and power relations in the seven apology speeches / The Dutch state’s apology for its role in the slavery past : Dominant discourses and power relations in the seven apology speeches

Rinzema, Lotte January 2023 (has links)
This study takes a deeper look into the apologies the Dutch state made in 2021 for the role of The Netherlands in the history of slavery. This was done by the presentation of seven speeches by seven members of the Dutch government in the national archives in the European and the Caribbean part of the Dutch Kingdom. By means of a critical discourse analysis with a discourse-historical approach, we examined the different discourses in the speeches and the power relations that are hidden in them. The aim of the study is therefore to map out the different discourses within the seven apology speeches of the Dutch government and to track the power relations that are present in them. This is done by answering the following research questions: Q1. What are the dominant discourses in the seven apology speeches of the Dutch government for the state's role in the history of slavery?; Q1.1 What power relations can be found in the dominant discourses of the seven apology speeches of the Dutch government for the state's role in the history of slavery? Taken as a whole, the speeches show a willingness to take responsibility, but they also point towards the former colonization and the power relations that stand until this day.
