Celebrating the chaos: a local re-examining of early U.S. radio regulationPobst, James Herbert 01 December 2009 (has links)
This dissertation re-examines a particular period of American broadcasting regulation in the 1920s, namely the "chaos" period traditionally labeled as the brief time in between the breakdown of federal radio regulation in early 1926 and the passage of the Radio Act of 1927. Using the ideas of heteroglossia and vernacular discourse drawn respectively from Mikhail Bakhtin and Gerard Hauser, I argue that the media scholarship understanding of chaos needs to be expanded beyond the conventional interpretation of a fatalistic moment which inevitably resulted in the support for broadcast commercialization on a national scale. This theoretical expansion reflects three trends that can be studied in this period: several years of uncertainty in regulatory decision-making, the attempted emergence of a greater variety of stations, and a substantive public debate about the direction of regulation towards commercialization. Chaos can ultimately be looked at as a positive term with ties to the traditional ideal of public interest in broadcasting.
I explore three levels and local examples of public discourse to make this argument about chaos, in the process concentrating on Chicago area stations, in particular WCFL and WJAZ, and their experiences during this period. First of all, congressional records of debate over radio regulation as well as the early actions of the Federal Radio Commission establish a level of governmental discourse that struggled to rationalize the elimination of stations towards network commercialization. Second, trade journals such as Radio Broadcast reflect a level of public discourse in close collaboration with regulators, but also reflective of listener voices resistant to the predominance of big commercial stations. Thirdly, WCFL programming, as characterized differently by both Chicago newspaper accounts and station literature, is regarded as contemporary evidence of the heteroglossic and vernacular quality of local broadcasting in urban environments, to be affected negatively by the regulatory turn towards the networks. Re-exploring this period with a more positive evaluation of "chaos," however, can aid scholars in drawing on historical support for media reform movements in an ever-changing communication environment.

Monte Carlo Modeling of a Varian 2100C 18 MV Megavoltage Photon Beam and Subsequent Dose Delivery using MCNP5Hoover, Jared Stephen 03 July 2007 (has links)
A Varian 2100C 18 MV photon beam has been modeled in this work using the MCNP5 Monte Carlo particle transport user code. The subsequent beam irradiation was also delivered to a water phantom and benchmarked against experimentally measured depth dose data. The model presented in this work establishes the foundation to which further beam characteristics tuning is required in order to realistically model the beam mentioned above. It has been determined in this work that the initial electron beam energy of this beam model is sufficiently close to the electron beam energy from the linear accelerator used to obtain the benchmark depth dose data.

The Impact of Social Media on the Publishing Industry: A Case Study of Author Colleen HooverFoster, Chloe 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Thanks to the BookTok community, adult romance author Colleen Hoover has taken the world by storm. Anyone that has had access to TikTok within the past year has probably had a Colleen Hoover book appear in video on their “For You Page,” the page on TikTok where users can scroll through content that follows an algorithm which learns about the user’s specific interests. However, Hoover has been writing and publishing novels since 2012. She had already published more than a dozen novels by 2020, yet her popularity has only grown since she made her appearance on social media. Her book entitled It Ends with Us has exponentially went up in sales in 2021, five years after its initial release. By the end of the book’s first month on the market, it had sold 21,000 copies. The author noticed a bump in sales in the last quarter of 2020, and by 2021, that bump in sales became an exponential growth in sales: 308,000 copies sold in only one year. Many critics believe that this growth in sales can contribute its success to TikTok, and specifically BookTok. Now, in 2022, over four million copies of It Ends with Us have been sold, and 20 million of Hoover’s books have been sold across the globe.
This research will take a look at how social media has a direct effect on the publishing industry and the consumption of literature, specifically looking into the phenomenon of Colleen Hoover. She has learned how to use her presence on social media platforms for marketing, while also simultaneously having her books marketed by her within the different social media communities. Social media is not going away anytime soon, so also having authors learn to use social media to their advantage can also help them to accelerate their rate of sales of their novels as well. Learning to analyze behaviors of social media platforms, learning current trends to make the author’s books more relevant to their markets, and interacting with audiences and fans can be quite beneficial to all authors. Colleen Hoover has made her social media presence quite prevalent, so taking a look into the tactics she uses, the posts she makes, and the events she holds to interact with her fans can be fascinating to study and learn how to use for other authors as well.
