IDENTITY PHAUXNETICS

This thesis investigates the construction of identity and authenticity through sociophonetic variation, focusing on British Hip Hop artist Amy Winehouse. Prior work on British vocal artists’ phonetic variation has relied upon regional categorical frameworks (Trudgill, 1983; Carlsson, 2001) and found variation to be evidence of production errors and speakers’ misidentification of targeted speech patterns, resulting in summative interpretations of conflict between speakers’ discreet identities and speech pattern categories. More recent work has attended to linguistic processes within cultural movements influenced but not strictly delimited by sociolinguistics’ canonical categories of region, class, race, etc. Within the context of the Hip Hop cultural movement, which demands members maintain authenticity via its mantra of keepin’ it real, scholars have described processes by which authenticity is redefined and re-localized (Pennycook, 2007), emphasized the performative process of the construction of identity rather than the categorical delineation of identity (Alim, 2009), explicated the construction of authenticity within Hip Hop as inextricable from Hip Hop’s roots in the Black American Speech Community (Alim, 2006), and shown how linguistic processes mediate the markedness of artists’ Whiteness as they construct authenticity within Hip (Cutler, 2007). This work applies sociophonetic analytic tools to sung and spoken speech informed by indexical theory. Through indexical theory, the construction of identity is examined via the employment of variants that do not convey fixed meanings but instead create complex fields of possible meaning (Eckert, 2008). The variables examined include postvocalic contexts of the liquids /l/ and /r/ and intervocalic instances of /t/. Findings indicate that Winehouse’s use of non-rhotic postvocalic /r/ in spoken language, rhotic postvocalic /r/ in singing language, glottal [ʔ] intervocalic /t/ in spoken language, intervocalic /t/ as [ɾ] in singing language, and categorical use of vocalized postvocalic /l/, demonstrates a negotiation between a Hip Hop identity and a White British non-posh identity. Her spoken and singing language represent a re-localizing of Hip Hop’s demand for authenticity within Winehouse’s British context. Findings indicate that phonetic features can index a redefinition of authenticity as forms of talk, such as Hip Hop, gain ownership in new contexts.

Analysis of the United States Hop Market

Hops are one of the four main ingredients used to produce beer. Many studies have been done to analyze the science behind growing and harvesting hops, creating hop hybrids, and how to brew beer with hops. However, there has been little research done revolving around the economic demand and supply model of the hop market. The objectives of this study are to create an econometric model of supply and demand of hops in the United States from 1981 to 2012, and to identify important exogenous variables that explain the supply and demand of hops using the two-stage least squares (2SLS) method of analysis. Using the 2SLS method, the demand model yielded that the US beer production variable is significant at the 10 percent level. For every 1 percent change in US beer production, there will be a 6.25 percent change in quantity of hops demanded in the same direction. The supply model showed that US acreage is significant at the 1 percent level. For every 1 percent change in US acreage, there will be a 0.889 percent change in quantity of hops supplied in the same direction. The implications of this study are viewed in relation to both producers and consumers.

Shakespeare, hip hop, and politics: stage managing Rome sweet Rome at the University of Iowa

Rome Sweet Rome, written, directed, composed, and choreographed by the Q Brothers Collective, is a hip-hop musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts produced Rome Sweet Rome in the fall of 2016 as part of the Mainstage season and the 2016-2017 Partnership in the Arts production. This thesis explores the unique production process of Rome Sweet Rome from the stage manager’s perspective. Since leadership, communication, and organization are essential attributes of stage managers, Samantha Paradis’ personal leadership, communication, and organization goals and outcomes for this production are addressed. Because theatre and life can be unpredictable this paper includes the analysis of new challenges that arose. Paradis concludes her exploration with final thoughts on the production and her development as a Graduate Stage Manager at the University of Iowa.

The Chronik Disorder project consists of an exegesis and screenplay. The exegesis discusses research into the film genre, three-act structure, mythic structure and archetypes. The research then informed thematic ideas, character creation and a method for plotting the screenplay and developing the characters. Chronik Disorder is an Australian story, set in contemporary Melbourne, about adolescents and rites of passage. The story explores teenagers and the hip-hop subculture, gangs, graffiti and drug experimentation. The story deals with other issues such as vocational challenges; the breakdown of the nuclear family; father-and-son relationships; and Vietnam veterans and how the war affected them emotionally and impacted on their relationships with their sons. Harley, 17, a hooker in an under-eighteen's rugby union team, dreams of playing with the under-nineteen's Australian Wallabies. Harley's alcoholic father, Kev, takes out his pain caused by his experiences in Vietnam on Harley, who escapes by hanging out with graffiti-based gang Chronik Disorder. When his friend Damian dies, Harley blames himself, ruins his rugby career, and escapes by hanging out with his gang, committing crimes and taking drugs.

MIMO Relays for Increased Coverage and Capacity in Broadband Cellular Systems

A significant challenge for fourth generation cellular systems is the reliable delivery of high speed (up to 1 gigabit per second) data to mobile or nomadic users throughout a cluttered urban environment. The wireless channel is a difficult channel over which to achieve high rate reliable communications. The wireless channel suffers many impairments such as small-scale multipath fading, shadowing, high path loss, co-channel interference, and Doppler shift due to mobility of the terminals and mobility in the propagation environment. Since radio spectrum is a scarce resource it is necessary to build cellular networks with high spectral efficiency. Two promising methods to solve this problem are multihop (MH) relaying and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna techniques. The most difficult mobile users to serve reliably are those close to cell edges and those shadowed by large objects such as buildings. With MH relaying, a number of simple and inexpensive wireless relays are deployed throughout the cell to relay transmissions around obstacles and to reduce the path loss to distant mobile users. Also, MH relaying enables the deployment of small subcells throughout the cell, increasing the system's area averaged spectral efficiency. Various MIMO techniques can be used in scattering channels to increase capacity and reliability of data links in a wireless network. MH relaying and MIMO are key inclusions in emerging cellular standards such as IEEE 802.16 and LTE-Advanced, so it is necessary to study how these may be used jointly in a cellular environment. We look at various techniques available in MH relaying and MIMO, and assess the benefits and difficulties of these techniques when used in cellular systems. We put together a realistic cellular system model, with typical cellular topologies and well-accepted propagation models, and assess the performance of a multihop MIMO system. We find that there are tradeoffs in using these techniques jointly since they provide gains by somewhat conflicting methods. MH relaying lowers path loss and mitigates scattering in the channel, while MIMO benefits from significant scattering. As a result, it is necessary to understand how to design a MH-MIMO network carefully in order to maximize the net benefit. / Communications

The hip-hop aesthetics and visual poetry of Wayde Comptons performance bond : claiming black space in contemporary Canada

Wayde Comptons poetry collection Performance Bond is a union of hip-hop aesthetics and visual poetry to create a space for Vancouvers black community. Although the majority of the poems in Performance Bond are lyric, visual poems have a significant and varied presence in the book. Compton creates his visual poetry by including such materials as photographs and signs, concrete poetry and pseudo-concrete poetry, graffiti, a simulated newspaper facsimile of an original Vancouver Daily Province article, voodoo symbols, and typed characters that do not necessarily form words. Despite a contemporary population of over two million people, the greater Vancouver area of today does not have a centralized black community similar to that found in other North American cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angles, Toronto, or Halifax. To reconcile the absence of a centralized black community in Vancouver, Compton turns to sampling black culture from across the world (with an obvious concentration on the United States) in order to develop and represent his own black identity. The similarities between visual poetry and hip-hop culture, particularly their emphasis on spatial representation, facilitate Comptons continuing project to create a place for the black community in Vancouver.

In computer science, real-time research is an interesting topic. Nowadays real-time applications are close to us in our daily life. Skype, MSN, satellite communication, automation car and Ethernet are all things related to the real-time field. Many of our computer systems are also real-time, such as RT-Linux, Windows CE. In other words, we live in a “real-time” world. However, not everyone knows much about its existence. Hence, we chose this thesis in order to take a knowledge journey in the real-time field. For an average reader, we hope to provide some basic knowledge about real-time. For a computer science student, we will try to provide a discussion on switched multi-hop network with offsets, and the influence of offsets on real-time network performance. We try to prove that offsets provide networks of high predictability and utilization because offsets adjust packet‟s sending time. A packet‟s sending time is the time when a sender/router starts to transmit a date packet. Packets are sent one after the other. Therefore, we need to lower the time interval between one packet and another. Hence, in our network model, network performance is more predictable and effective. There might be some things left to discuss in future, so we would like to receive any advice and also suggestions for future discussions.
