Reviving 'white elephants' : a culture-centred approach to the African Ivory Route Tourism Patnership.Sheik, Zuleika B. 15 September 2014 (has links)
This study explores the relationship between the government, private sector and local
communities (public-private-community), through tourism and a culture-centered approach to
communication for social change. Its focus is on the role of communication processes in
amplifying the voices of the subaltern and how power relations affect this resonance in
public-private-community tourism partnerships. Grounded in a pragmatic cultural studies
approach which is self-reflexive, this study seeks to explore the connection between forms of
power and lived experiences.
The study is informed by Critical Social Science, which advocates a radical ethics concerned
with power and oppression. It encourages the researcher to act as a bricoleur by taking up
moral projects which serve to weave collaboration, agency and transformation. Case studies
of two tourist camps in the African Ivory Route, which are government-funded, communityowned,
and privately-operated, provide the ‘hunting ground’ for exposing the existing
communicative processes between the partners and manifestations of power. The relationship
between the government, community and private partner will be examined through Lauren
Dyll-Myklebust’s (2011) schematic Public-Private-Community Partnership model, which
was developed to account for the multiple dimensions of the type of development
communication strategies employed in inaugurating operations in a public-privatecommunity
partnership tourism initiative. This, together with my own reflexive analysis, will
elucidate the kinds of communicative processes that exist in the partnership. An objective of
the study is to identify ways in which communication in tourism development partnerships
can facilitate subaltern agency. Tourism has often been criticised for its inability to function as a positive vehicle for
development. This study aims to show that by listening to the voices of the subaltern,
fostering dialogue and encouraging collaboration, tourism development initiatives can
empower communities. / M.A. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2013.

Úskalí života rodin s dětmi dlouhodobě setrvávajících na ubytovnách / The life of families with children in the long term remaining in hostels.KUBEŠOVÁ, Stanislava January 2017 (has links)
Diploma thesis discusses life of families with children in social housing. Reasons for long term life of some families in social housing is lack of money, high indebtedness, issues concerning duties of rental agreements. The thesis aims to map risks related to long term using of these facilities. Further it examines means of acquiring standard accomodation of these families and their readiness for duties following house rental. It also inquires in comparison of opinions of families with expert opinions. Theoretical part clarifies right for accomodation as a basic human need. It explains term sof renting and social housing. Furthermore it deals with integration of persons from excluded localities. Factors of endangering persons living long term in social housing, institutions concerned with these issues, possible solutions and related benefits entitlements are also part of the theoretical part. Practical part is in form of qualitative research: namely semi-structured interview. Research has two parts. First part is focused on opinions of actual families living in social housin. In second part are opinions of experts. Interviews took place in three social houses and in workplace of experts. From the research results is clear that life in social housing has negative impact on the occupants. People live there in social isolation and in very bad sanitary and technical conditions. This situation has very bad influence on children who lack the culture of regular accomodation. It is necessary to specify the cooperation principle of social workers in job centers and in government instituions. Families need help with the trasition from social housing to rental housing. Considering for example the means for paying the deposit. Another step could be the employment increase, which is the best tool agains the social exclusion. Simultaneously it is necessary to put in place a rent cap of social housing, to adopt legislation concerning social housing that would solve particulary housing issues of families with children, thus allowing parents to rise children sustainably in decent conditions.

question?rio contendo seis perguntas do tipo fechadas para identificar o perfil do novo
interpreta??o cr?tica do conte?do.
The means of lodging, as important components for the tourist activity, have a set of elements
that contribute to the competitiveness of the sector. The hostels are one of these elements, and
in particular, they have been highlighted because they have the opportunity to offer the
exchange of experiences to their guests. In this sense, knowledge about the behavioral
changes of its consumers becomes important for the generation of competitive advantage,
considering the complexity of the study of consumer behavior and the factors that influence
choice decisions. The importance of identifying consumer values, whether intrinsic or
extrinsic, is emphasized. This research presents as main objective, the analysis of the
motivational attributes to choose the hostels as means of lodging. The methodology used to
reach the goal proposed in this study consists of two steps: first, the questionnaire was
applied, containing six closed-ended questions to identify the profile of the new consumer of
hostels in Brazil; Then online focus groups were conducted through the Messenger
application in order to identify the main attributes of hostel choice. Thus, the research is
characterized as exploratory-descriptive, with a qualitative approach. For the analysis of the
data, NVivo 11 software was used with ways to facilitate the critical interpretation of the
content. We analyzed the reports and discussions of 53 participants of the online focus
groups, whose results pointed out a new hostel consumer in Brazil that has, as priorities,
interaction with other guests, experiences and cultural exchanges and cost-benefit, classified
as attributes Which add more value when choosing a hostel as a means of tourist
accommodation. It was concluded with the presentation of the trends of the hostels due to the
increase of tourist demand with focus on the experiences. Given that tourism becomes, in this
case, the facilitator of social exchanges, making it possible to meet people from different
countries and cultures in one place.

Assaulting childhood : an ethnographic study of children resident in a Western Cape migrant hostel complexJones, Sean Wilshire January 1990 (has links)
Bibliography: pages 335-348. / This study documents the lives of children between the ages of 10 and 15 years who reside in migrant worker hostels in the Hottentots-Holland region of the Western Cape. It focuses on three particular aspects of the children's lives: their domestic circumstances and relationships prior to their residence in the hostels; their experiences of everyday life in the hostels; and the quality, extent, and determinants of their education over time. The children's domestic circumstances before moving to the hostels had been disrupted in the extreme. This disruption took various forms, but was caused primarily by the participation of parents and other significant adults in labour migration. Consequently, the children's histories are characterised by high levels of mobility, where children themselves have migrated, by frequent separation from parents, and by high incidences of foster-parenting. Testimony by the children indicates that they have felt this domestic disruption acutely. A further consequence of the children's residential and domestic mobility has been regular interruptions over time in their schooling. Factors such as the frequency of the children's own movement, separation from their parents, devaluative attitudes towards education by temporary foster parents, and vicissitudes in their economic circumstances have meant that most of them have progressed less than half as far at school as they should have done. This is compounded at Lwandle by the state's refusal to provide a school for hostel children, and by the inadequacy of the 'self-help' teaching which takes place there as a result. The children's everyday lives in the hostels are examined in relation to the severe limitations on space and privacy which exist there. Particular attention is granted to children's perceptions of the hostel milieu, to the difficulties which parents experience in rearing children in the hostels, to parent-child relations, and to the games and other play-activities in which the children engage. Perhaps the most prominent feature of life in the hostels which emerged during the research is the frequency with which children are exposed to acts of extreme violence. The study documents both the children's accounts of this violence, and their diagnoses of it. In conclusion, questions are raised about the future of these children and others like them. Attention is also directed towards the potential for further research into childhood by anthropology and other social sciences. The study grants primacy to children's viewpoints over and above those of their parents and other adults in the hostels, and one of its implicit objectives is to demonstrate the value to anthropology of children's insights into social life. It makes extensive use of the children's own testimony, both written and oral, and of life history material.

The relation between hostels and the political violence on the Reef from July 1990 to December 1993 : a case study of Merafe and Meadowlands hostels in Soweto.Xeketwane, Babylon Mgcinaka January 1995 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, for the degree of Master of Arts. Johannesburg
1995. / This thesis set out to investigate the relation between
hostels and the political violence on the Reef between July
1990 and December 1993 which claimed 4756 lives. This
relation is anchored in a broader discussion of firstly,
political violence in South Africa generally, and secondly of
the hostel system. This contextualisation frames the
investigation of two Sowetan hostels Meadowlands and Merafe.
These two hostels were among those that became focal points
of political violence on the Reef during the period under
review. The thesis argues that the political violence and
conflict on the Reef between 1990 and 1993 constituted a "war"
in which these and other hostels played a crucial part. The
Inkatha Freedom Party colonised these institutions, ejected
non-Zulu and ANC supporters and transformed the hostels from
migrants camps into "fortresses of fear" from which many
attacks on township residents were launched. The thesis
attempts to understand this process through an in-depth
investigation of Meadowlands and Merafe hostels as case
studies. It attempts to draw a sociological profile of these
two hostels. This has involved examining these hostels as
social institutions, the social relations and culture
operating within them, and their place in the social structure
of the surrounding community. The thesis has included an
investigation of the social characteristics of hostel
residents such as their ethnic identity, age, gender identity,
marital, employment status, political affiliation and work
history. These multiple identities are components in
attempting to explain the participation of many hostel
residents in political violence. Through a series of in-depth
interviews the thesis has attempted to map their different
experiences and understandings of political violence in
relation to their broader aspirations, beliefs and world
views. It is asserted that any investigation of the relation
between hostels and political violence requires this attempt
to map a 'view from below' which goes deeper than official
statistics and media accounts. / AC2017

Exploring the perceived flooding impacts on tourist accommodation establishments in the Limpopo province, South AfricaSouthon, Mercia Patricia January 2017 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree
of Master of Science.
School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies (GAES). Johannesburg, October 2017. / Climate and weather-related impacts have become widespread particularly affecting the
tourism industry. Changes in the climate and weather lead to changes in tourist seasons,
products and travel opportunities. Flooding has gained research attention over the past decade,
since the destruction creates many challenges for tourism businesses. Floods are a growing
global problem, increasing in terms of frequency of occurrence, property damages, business
economic losses, and fatalities. South Africa has begun to experience many annual flood events
both coastal and in-land, but the Limpopo Province has been declared as flood disaster area,
since the increase in temperatures and precipitation. Interest now lies on how particular tourist
destinations in the Limpopo Province can adapt to reduce flooding risks whilst increasing
opportunities mainly for the economy. Debates around flooding costs, recovery processes, and
adaptive capacities affirm to be more challenging for the tourism accommodation sector. The
study aimed to explore the perceived flooding impacts on different types of tourist
accommodation. Thus, to determine if floods hindered any tourist bookings, offerings, and
tourist length of stay. The exploration verified the possible flood risks to vulnerable
accommodation and no adequate adaptation plans. A purposeful sample of 145 tourist
accommodation businesses located across three flood-prone regions of the Limpopo Province
were selected to answer a semi-structured questionnaire to put across their flooding experiences
from a management perspective. The semi-structured questionnaire was combined with
telephone interviews and email responses. Coherent theme development within the theoretical
framework was achieved through content analysis. Content analysis allowed for the critical
discussion of deductive and inductive themes found in the results. Floods during peak-seasons
threaten and affect tourist accommodation, leaving them behind in business. Those not affected
benefit with increased tourist demand and new opportunities in the hospitality industry. Tourist
accommodation businesses are exposed to flood risks and experience challenges to assess,
recover and adapt from the direct and indirect impacts. Alongside the destruction of tourism in
these regions, were concerns of the provision of flood mapping and flood management plans
for tourism businesses. Wider flooding impacts on the environment and the surrounding local
communities demonstrates a growing problem for the future.
Key words: floods; tourist accommodation; flooding impacts; risks; opportunities; tourist
demand; adaptation; flood recovery, flood mapping, flood management plans. / LG2018

Quality of life of migrant workers at EskomNaves, Patience Mmetja 22 August 2012 (has links)
M.A. / This chapter has been dedicated towards painting a picture of the quality of life issues regarding migrant workers living in hostels. The results and findings as interpreted has brought about useful information that will be utilised to draw conclusions and recommendations. Quality of Life of Migrant Workers at Eskom The findings have reconfirmed who the migrant worker is in terms of the description given by Leatt (1981) which was the definition adopted for the study. The indices drawn from the objective and subjective indicators of quality of life which were adopted from Moller, Schlemmer and Du Toit's (1987) were used as the basis from which the interview schedule was drawn, and has proved useful. Reference is made in particular to questions 12,13 and 14. Relevant construct for quality of life were found, with more usable constructs from questions 12 and 13. Furthermore the statistical analysis of the vector of the mean test scores referring to the HOT 1 has also given useful information as it enabled the student to analyse three variables independently and jointly see section 3.3. Cross tabulations representing correlations between indices created out of quality of life indicators namely core quality of life issues as identified by Question(s) 12,13 and 14 and the objective indicators of quality of life, namely accommodation, the intake of nutritious food, and recreation practices. There is a clear demonstration of quality of life issues that should be looked at if the quality of life of migrant workers living in hostels has to be improved. Although there are many diverse quality of life issues identified in the study the three that were selected with the framework of this study has given usable information. The next chapter will address the conclusions and recommendations.
