A nomadic place between home and hostel

Arabsky, Heather 22 August 2013 (has links)
According to the current research of human geographers, home can be defined as both a physical place which we inhabit, as well as an ideal infused with feelings of belonging, intimacy and connection. Globalization has given rise to a unique set of political, economic and environmental issues, casting daily life into a fast-paced state of flux, technology and superficial communication have become commonplace. While technology has increased the ease of global tourism networking, many travelers set off seeking refuge from the superficial interactions they experience daily. These nomadic tendencies are rooted in a desire to seek connection in the commonality of their peers, in search of their place in the globalized world. The hostel plays an important role as an anchoring point for those on nomadic journeys.

This article intends to address the commercial hospitality at Hostel Che Lagarto Copacabana, focusing on the proposals by author Camargo (2004). Such type of lodging has a different way of accommodating guests, because it offers a friendly and economical environment with good quality services that try to satisfy the guests, further providing an exchange of experiences at the place, through a cultural interchange among tourists from all over the world. The methodology used in this article is an exploratory qualitative research, whose general purpose was to study commercial hospitality, focusing on the categories of receiving, lodging, feeding, and entertaining. The data collected made us see the hostel under a different light as a commercial space, because it is no longer only a place to lodge for profitable purposes, but further, it is a place where the employees care to make the atmosphere friendly, and chiefly to keep learning every day how to receive the guests so well that they will come back to stay there in the future.

Youth Hostel: Interior Porches Connecting A Home Away From Home And The City Outside

Lin, Li-Wen 24 April 2012 (has links)
In a centrally located area in the city of Richmond, the youth hostel that I propose provides young people and backpackers a suitable place to stay while enjoying their journey in the historical city of Richmond. The youth hostel offers inexpensive overnight lodging and other amenities they can use for themselves such as self-serve kitchens, laundtry rooms, etc. Something that is worth mentioning, the youth hostel's site is also close by the Richmond Visitor Center. It can offer travelers some travel information or souvenir venue. Furthermore, with the distinguished site, there is another characteristic. That is, the building was built in 1963 and it represents the International Building Style. The Jackson Ward community primariry consists of tra-ditional architecture style buildings, such as Italianate and Second Empire styles. The building for this project is the only modern structure. This makes it stand out and give the impression of an emotionless institution. Therefore, there is no doubt that the International Style building holds a place in this community. So, how can the community embrace this site? How do the characteristics of Jackson Ward integrate with my building? And how can the archi-tectural style of this building relate better and warm up to the residents? By transforming the residential design elements in Jackson Ward Area, my endeavor is not only to create a welcoming youth hostel inside the building but also to introduce Richmond's history and famous spots to travelers. While more people visit the youth hostel, more people will know about Jackson Ward, and the city of Richmond.

ENERGY AUDIT OF HIG STUDENT HOSTEL

Yao, Li January 2014 (has links)
Nowadays in the world, energy usage effectiveness has always been an issue which blocks people’s development. How to effectively use the energy is becoming more and more important. Energy audit can appraise the energy usage condition of a building, and come up with improvement advices through systematic calculation and analysis the existing problems and reasons for energy wastes, in order to bring the object of effective usage of energy into reality. HiG student hostel 23 is situated in Gävle, a coastal city in the east of Sweden. There are three floors in Hostel 23, the first and second floor have 18 single rooms, 4 double rooms and 2 communal kitchens and the third floor is storeroom. The aim of this thesis is to explore indoor climate and energy use for this student hostel and find out the reason of the low temperature inside the room, seeking some ways to improve the thermal comfort inside the building during winter conditions. First, collect date from every part in energy balance by measurement and interview with administrator, then calculate and analyze the data. At last, the whole energy balance can be estimated. Through analyzing the whole energy balance, the suggestion is to change the window type and design a new ventilation system operating plan. Through the optimization, energy loss is reduced, and about 10% of the energy is preserved. Besides this, the building infiltration loss is too high through this energy audit; it states there still exists some problems. If these problems can be solved, it will be helpful to keep a good thermal comfort inside the building.
