Hostel redevelopment programme of the Kagiso Hostel in the Mogale City Local Municipality

Ubisi, Salphinah Vuloyimuni 17 March 2014 (has links)
Hostels are a product of the migrant labour system that originated in the copper mining industry in Namaqualand in the 1850s. The migrant labour compounds were used to accommodate migrant labour workers in the urban areas. However, these compounds also meant that migrant labour workers were denied the right of access to permanent accommodation and residential space in the urban areas. After the repeal of the influx control and segregative laws in South Africa in 1986, some of the hostel dwellers brought their relatives and friends to live in the hostels and this resulted in problems such as overcrowding which were exacerbated by poor management and control of the hostels. The living conditions of the hostel dwellers deteriorated during the 1990s. After the announcement of the unbanning of all liberation movements and political parties in South Africa in the 1990s, hostel violence broke out. This hostel violence left many hostel blocks vandalised and without basic municipal services such as electricity, water and waste removal. The hostel violence was primarily between the Inkata Freedom Party (IFP) aligned hostel dwellers and the African National Congress (ANC) aligned township and informal settlement residents. The hostel violence has catalysed the public housing challenges faced by the democratic government since its inception in 1994. Nevertheless, since 1994 the democratic government has introduced various housing programmes in an effort to provide adequate houses for all South African citizens. One such housing programme is the hostel redevelopment programme. The hostel redevelopment programme was adopted by the democratic government after 1994 with the aim of, among other things, upgrading public hostels, redeveloping and converting the rooms in public hostels into family rental units in order to improve the living conditions of the hostel dwellers and introducing hostel dwellers to family life. The Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) is one of the municipalities in Gauteng province that is participating in the hostel redevelopment programme. The findings of this study have revealed that the upgrading of the Kagiso hostel involved the following two processes: During the first process, the MCLM upgraded the Kagiso hostel by fixing broken windows and doors, repairing toilets and providing basic municipal services such as electricity, water, and waste removal in order to improve the living conditions of the hostel dwellers. The second process involved demolishing the hostel blocks and converting them into family units in order to address the public housing challenges relevant to the Kagiso hostel. In this study, the hostel redevelopment programme is called process 1 and the community residential units (CRU) programme is called process 2. / Public Administration & Management / M. Tech. Čišecký, Ladislav January 2017 (has links)
Diploma thesis deals with evaluation of indoor environment of a school complex in atypical Himalayan alpine environment which is totally dependent on energy originating from renewable sources. Structural design of buildings allows maximum utilization of solar energy which is the only one actually available source of energy in this area. The buildings are de-scribed in detail, as well as measurement conducted in buildings during the last year. The out-comes of measurements are compared with desired values. The thesis is also focused on math-ematical simulations by using BSim software. Nätbaserad utbildning för en hållbar besöksnäring

Brickstad, Lars January 2013 (has links)
A system to regulate both quality and sustainability regarding Swedish tourism industry is under way. In order for the system to be successfull it needs to be accompanied by an education, in this case a net based education is studied. High requirements are demanded for a successful net based education for a sustainable tourism industry. This is valid both for the didactic area,  which is how an education is structured and planned and in the organisational area, which is how and education best is implemented in a company. The aim with this study is to increase the understandings of which aspects that are important for  developers  if this net based education. The study was conducted at three hostels in Stockholm with surrondings.  Both managers and  employees participated in the study.  The managers where interviewed and got to answer a questionniare. The employees participated in a workshop. The outcome of this study indicates that education is  needed for  a successful system. Following the resut an analysis and discussion from where a  couple of  conclusions and recommendations is derived  for a successful  development  of a net based education in quality and sustainability for hostels. These are in summary  that: The education should consist to a great amount social activities. The education should promote questioned reflections in collaboration with others. The education should be relevant for every participant. It should exist a common part which is the same for every participant. Good leadership is of most importance when implementing a new education. The education should be attached with sufficient implementation information. A net based forum should be established as a complement to the education.

Veliz Peña, Mayron César 27 May 2021 (has links)
This thesis focuses on three problems that are currently observed in the context of the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño, firstly the necessity for a shelter for parents of childrens from province who receive care in this hospital; secondly, the markets in a state of emergency that are located, in large numbers, around the hospital, and finally the lack of public space in Breña, according to the latest surveys conducted in the district. All this brings together two typologies, the shelter and the market, for which initiatives related to the donation recycling trade that are currently being developed in the city of Lima have been investigated. By generating this commercial link between the two typologies, a common benefit is achieved for the coexistence of both. Thus, the architectural project is used as a focus of development in an urban environment with a very particular problem in the city. / Tesis
