REACHABILITY ANALYSIS OF HUMAN-IN-THE-LOOP SYSTEMS USING GAUSSIAN MIXTURE MODEL WITH SIDE INFORMATION

<p dir="ltr">In the context of a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) system, the accuracy of reachability analysis plays a significant role in ensuring the safety and reliability of HITL systems. In addition, one can avoid unnecessary conservativeness by explicitly considering human control behavior compared to those methods that rely on the system dynamics alone. One possible approach is to use a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to encode human control behavior using the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. However, relatively few works consider the admissible control input ranges due to physical limitations when modeling human control behavior. This could make the following reachability analysis overestimate the system's capability, thereby affecting the performance of the HITL system. To address this issue, this work presents a constrained stochastic reachability analysis algorithm that can explicitly account for the admissible control input ranges. By confining the ellipsoidal confidence region of each Gaussian component using Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), we probabilistically constrain the GMM as well as the corresponding stochastic reachable sets. A comprehensive mathematical analysis of how the constrained GMM can affect the stochastic reachable sets is provided in this work. Finally, the proposed stochastic reachability analysis algorithm is validated via an illustrative numerical example.</p>

Relation entre le traitement maternel en bas âge et la régulation de la tristesse à huit ans : une étude de jumeaux

La présente étude porte sur les aspects Nature-Culture relatifs à l’émergence de variations interindividuelles quant à la capacité universelle de régulation d’une émotion primaire, la tristesse. Cette problématique représente un exemple du lien entre la conception évolutionniste d’une nature humaine universelle, innée et génétiquement prescrite, mais susceptible de variation dans son expression en fonction d’expériences individuelles liées aux processus de socialisation et d’enculturation. À l’aide du devis génétiquement informatif des jumeaux, nous nous sommes d’abord penchés sur l’étiologie gènes-environnement de la dépression à l’enfance, une dysfonction du système de régulation émotionnelle de la tristesse. Puis, nous nous sommes interrogés quant à l’influence du traitement et de l’état psychique maternels sur cet aspect du développement émotionnel de l’enfant. Nos analyses de la symptomatologie dépressive indiquent une absence d’influence génétique dans le développement de ce trouble de l’humeur. Les variations individuelles de la régulation de la tristesse reposent ainsi uniquement sur les effets de l’environnement. Nos résultats révèlent également l’existence d’une relation importante entre l’état psychique de la mère, évalué lorsque les jumeaux avaient cinq mois, et la présence de symptômes dépressifs chez ces derniers mesurés huit ans plus tard. L’état psychique de la mère est considéré comme l’un des meilleurs indicateurs de la qualité du traitement maternel en bas âge. Nos mesures directes des comportements maternels envers le nourrisson et le développement ultérieur du trouble de dépression indiquent également l’existence de tendances statistiques allant dans le sens de notre hypothèse d’un traitement maternel sous-optimal contribuant au développement de dysfonctions émotionnelles ultérieures. / The present study explores the Nature-Nurture aspects pertaining to the emergence of interindividual variation in the emotional regulation of a primary emotion, sadness. This question is an example of the more encompassing issue of a universal human nature, biologically evolved and genetically underwritten, being nevertheless variable in its expression depending on individual experiences linked to socialization and enculturation. Using a genetically informative twin design, we explored the genetic-environmental aetiology of child depression, which is understood to be a dysfunction in the emotional regulation system of sadness. We then assessed the influences of maternal behavior and mental state on the development of children’s depressive symptoms. Our analysis of child depression shows an absence of genetic influence in the emergence of this mood disorder. Thus, individual variation in sadness regulation appears to be solely generated by environmental influences. Our results also show a strong and significant relation between maternal psychological state, assessed when the twins were 5 months of age, and children’s depressive symptoms measured 8 years later. Maternal psychological state is considered to be one of the most reliable indicators of the quality of maternal treatment in childhood. Our direct measures of maternal behavior toward the infant and the subsequent development of depressive disorder also point to statistical trends supporting our hypothesis of suboptimal maternal treatment contributing to the development of later emotional dysfunction.

Despite of the importance of dynamic reciprocity, there are a few works that treat the mobility condition of the people experimenting space. The present study investigates environmental perception of users of the Engenheiro Roberto Freire Avenue sidewalk, one of the few places in Natal for physical activities practicing, where most people are in intense and continuous movement. A few questions for this study where made: In what way does the individual realize the environment while he is moving? How do reciprocal man-environment relations occur there, according to a mobility context? What are the main difficulties and easiness in man-environment interaction under this condition? The search for these answers is based on concepts of social-spatial human behavior - especially personal space, territoriality, density and crowding and contributions of Barker?s Ecologycal Psychology. Considering that the physical space in this case is multifaceted and the perception of theses scenarios is governed by multiples senses and stimuli, it was defined a multi-methodological route: (i) observation participative in loco; (ii) identification of the main behavior settings at the area; (iii) categorization of the activities occurring at the place; (iv) application of a semi-structured interview; (v) images registered and (vi) construction of the researcher s log. The perception of oneself and others in movement in the environment, immersed in a intricate web of inter-actions, makes people develop mobility strategies, many times unconsciously, with the aim of ensuring satisfaction in its activities. <p>Within this thesis, we examined the possibilities of using an increasing amount of<br />publicly available metadata about locations and peoples&#39; activities in order to gain<br />new knowledge and develop new models of behavior and movement of people. The<br />purpose of the research conducted for this thesis was to solve practical problems,<br />such as: analyzing attractive tourist sites, defining the most frequent routes people<br />are taking, defining main ways of transportation, and discovering behavioral<br />patterns in terms of defining strategies to suppress expansion of virus infections. In<br />this thesis, a practical study was carried out on the basis of protected (aggregated<br />and anonymous) CDR (Caller Data Records) data and metadata of geo-referenced<br />multimedia content.</p> / <p>Предмет и циљ истраживања докторске дисертације представља евалуација<br />могућности коришћења све веће количине јавно доступних података о<br />локацији и кретању људи, како би се дошло до нових сазнања, развили нови<br />модели понашања и кретања људи који се могу применити за решавање<br />практичних проблема као што су: анализа атрактивних туристичких локација,<br />откривање путања кретања људи и средстава транспорта које најчешће<br />користе, као и откривање важних параметара на основу којих се може<br />развити стратегија за заштиту нације од инфективних болести итд. A presente dissertação objetiva demonstrar a aplicabilidade dos conceitos relativos à arquitetura organizacional à criação de entidade de autogestão em saúde. Para atingir este propósito agregamos à revisão bibliográfica de trabalhos versando sobre a nova teoria da firma e sobre o mercado de saúde suplementar brasileiro informações coletadas a partir da experiência profissional do autor e de colaboradores atuantes no setor em questão. A fundamentàção teórica agrupando os conceitos econômicos utilizados no trabalho conjugada com a realização de retrospectiva histórica do setor, bem como a contextualização de seu cenário atual, possibilitaram a construção de proposta para constituição de entidade de autogestão . em saúde do tipo patrocinada.Desse modo, podemos concluir que a correta leitura do ambiente de negócios ao qual se vincula, traduzida na elaboração de estratégia viabilizadora das aspirações da entidade, possibilita estruturar a firma sob o critério de melhor uso do conhecimento específico disperso entre os empregados. Para tanto, deve-se definir uma política de delegação de poder para tomada de decisões aos colaboradores conjuntamente com a formulação de sistemas de incentivos e avaliação e monitoramento de performance como alternativa eficiente na busca pela maximização do resultado da instituição. / The present dissertation objective to demonstrate the applicability of the relative concepts to the organizacional architecture to the creation of entity of self management in health. To reach this intention we add to the bibliographical revision of works turning on the new theory of the firm and on the brazilian market of suplemental health the information collected from the professional experience of the author and of operating collaborators in the sector in questiono The theoretical recital grouping the used economic concepts in the work conjugated with the accomplishment of historical retrospect of the sector, as well as the contextualization of its current scene, makes possible the construction of proposal for constitution of entity of self management in health of the sponsored type. In this manner, we can conclude that the correct business-oriented reading of the environment which if ties, translated in the elaboration of strategy of the aspirations of the entity, makes possible to structuralize the firm under the criterion of better use of the dispersed specific knowledge between the employees. For in such a way, one politics of delegation of jointly being able for taking of decisions to the collaborators with the formularization of systems of incentives and evaluation and monitoring of efficient performance as alternative in the search for the maximization of the result of the institution must be defined.

A coerência da Ética nos Negócios e da Ética Pessoal leva à integridade, a maior das virtudes. Com base no referencial teórico, foi realizada uma pesquisa que tinha por objetivo verificar a coerência entre os comportamentos de executivos na vida pessoal e na vida profissional. Os resultados desta pesquisa indicaram que não existe convergência total entre os comportamentos dos executivos na vida pessoal e na vida profissional. / The coherence between business and personal ethics leads to integrity, which builds the character and is the greatest virtue on any business or personal environment. This survey explores general concepts on Business Ethics and Personal Ethics and is based on Robert C. Solomon’s Virtue Ethics, which was developed from the Aristotelian approach. Concepts such as human values, attitudes and behavior as well as cognitive dissonance and decision-making are explained. A research intended to assess the coherence between the executive’s behavior in the enterprise when exposed to a professional situation and the executive’s behavior in this same situation in his personal life. The results of how an executive reacts in his business environment in contrast to how he responds in his private life, revealed two different paths, which do not totally converge.

Factorial invariance of an employee engagement instrument across different race groups

The overall objective of this study was to determine the factorial invariance of a South African-developed Employee Engagement Instrument (EEI) across different race groups in financial institutions. A secondary objective of this study was to determine whether race groups differ significantly with regard to the six dimensions of the employee engagement instrument. A quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive research design was followed in this study, using a non-probability, convenience sampling (N = 1175). The EEI was electronically administered to 285 000 businesspeople from various demographic backgrounds, which form part of a research database. The focus was respondents from financial institutions. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was employed to achieve the empirical objectives of this study. Findings from the statistical analysis indicated that White and Black employees differed significantly with regards to how they are engaged by their immediate managers; however, the practical significance was small. Furthermore, the employee engagement instrument was found to be reliable and valid and the instrument was invariant across the four different race groups. By understanding how employees from different backgrounds are engaged it enables organisations to customise their engagement programmes to meet the needs of the various types of employees within the organisation, instead of applying a “one size fits all” approach to engagement programmes. The findings of this study provided valuable insights into the importance of employee engagement in a South African context, especially for financial institutions. Finally, the study adds to the vast body of knowledge that exists with regard to employee engagement and race, both locally and internationally. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Com. Contribui??es da inser??o musical para a qualidade de vida no trabalho em ambiente laboral fabril

As to music insertion we considered the theoretical-empirical perception about how music is inserted at work and its functions on such place. The context where the study was taken was the manufacturing area of a major textile company, located in Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in which music is used during labor activities. The only study case was the research strategy adopted, with exploratory and descriptive purposes. The primary data were collected through the focus group technique, applied to the collaborator in the manufacturing sector. The semi-structured interview was done as a complementary tool, directed to the supervisor in that sector. Respecting the theoretical saturation criterion, we formed four focus groups, each one composed of eight members randomly selected, among the seventy-six collaborators in the sector. The data were analyzed qualitatively, through the content analysis technique, more specifically the category analysis. We identified twenty-eight QWL attributes. Six of them were found present in the four focus groups and in the interview. Among these ones, the attribute of Interpersonal Relationship at Work, contemplating the Psychological and Organizational dimensions, was the only one anticipated in four out of fifteen theoretical models here listed. The attribute Music at Work Environment could be inserted in the four QWL dimensions, highlighting the power and relevance of this attribute for the research participants. The way music has been inserted in the labor environment contributes to promoting well-being at work, which goes against theoretical conceptions, especially when it comes to musical genre. We identified nine functions of music at work, among which, Improving Work Conditions, Improving Interpersonal Relationship at Work and Favoring Motivation for Work had to be emphasized for being associated to three QWL attributes. In the total, we highlighted seven associations. The most affected QWL dimension through the insertion of music at work was the Psychological one, followed by the Organizational one. We conclude that music insertion provides biological, social and, above all, psychological and organizational well-being to the contributors, thus contributing to obtaining QWL at the labor environment researched. However, we should consider the context and proceed to periodical plans and adjustments in the way of music insertion so as to avoid health and well-being problems to those people at work / A presente Tese objetivou compreender como a inser??o de m?sica no ambiente laboral contribui para a obten??o da Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho - QVT, na perspectiva da percep??o do bem-estar biopsicossocial e organizacional. Com rela??o ? inser??o musical, partiu-se de concep??es te?rico-emp?ricas acerca da forma como a m?sica ? inserida no trabalho e das fun??es por ela exercida naquele ambiente. O contexto onde se realizou o estudo foi o setor de confec??o de uma ind?stria t?xtil de grande porte, localizada na cidade de Natal, estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, em que se utilizava m?sica durante a atividade laboral. O estudo de caso ?nico foi a estrat?gia de pesquisa adotada, com finalidades explorat?ria e descritiva. Os dados prim?rios foram coletados atrav?s da t?cnica de grupo focal, adotada como instrumento principal de coleta de dados, aplicado aos colaboradores do setor de confec??o. A entrevista semiestruturada foi utilizada como instrumento complementar, direcionado ? supervisora daquele setor. Respeitando-se o crit?rio de satura??o te?rica, foram formados quatro grupos focais, cada um dos quais compostos por oito participantes, selecionados de forma aleat?ria, entre os setenta e seis colaboradores do setor. Os dados foram analisados qualitativamente, atrav?s da t?cnica de an?lise de conte?do, mais especificamente, a an?lise categorial. Identificaram-se vinte e oito atributos de QVT. Seis deles estavam presentes nos quatro grupos focais e na entrevista. Dentre esses, o atributo Relacionamento Interpessoal no Trabalho, contemplado nas dimens?es Psicol?gica e Organizacional, foi o ?nico previsto em quatro dos quinze modelos te?ricos aqui elencados. O atributo M?sica no Ambiente de Trabalho p?de ser inserido nas quatro dimens?es de QVT, evidenciando a for?a e a relev?ncia desse atributo para os participantes da pesquisa. A forma como a m?sica vem sendo inserida no ambiente laboral contribui para promover o bem-estar no trabalho, o que contraria concep??es te?ricas, sobretudo no que concerne ao g?nero musical. Foram identificadas nove fun??es da m?sica no trabalho, dentre as quais, Melhorar as Condi??es de Trabalho, Melhorar o Relacionamento Interpessoal no Trabalho e Favorecer a Motiva??o Para o Trabalho mereceram destaque por estarem associadas a tr?s atributos de QVT. Ao todo, foram evidenciadas sete associa??es. A dimens?o de QVT mais afetada pela inser??o de m?sica no trabalho foi a Psicol?gica, seguida da dimens?o Organizacional. Conclui-se que a inser??o musical proporciona bem-estar biol?gico, social, e, sobretudo, psicol?gico e organizacional aos colaboradores, contribuindo para a obten??o de QVT no ambiente laboral pesquisado. Contudo, faz-se necess?rio considerar o contexto e proceder a planejamento e ajustes peri?dicos na forma de inser??o musical, de modo a evitar danos ? sa?de e ao bem-estar das pessoas no trabalho
