Quantifying the interaction between riparian vegetation and flooding: from cross-section to catchment scale

Anderson, Brett Gordon January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study investigates whether the flood regime in a catchment is sensitive to the condition of riparian vegetation along the river network. The research is based on a comprehensive assessment and synthesis of field and laboratory measurements of vegetation flow resistance. A new numerical model is developed to estimate the roughness characteristics of multi-species riparian assemblages at a cross-section. Reach-scale and catchment-scale flood routing models are then applied to estimate the impact of vegetation on flood characteristics at successively larger scales. The investigation reveals that when riparian vegetation is removed at catchment-scale, peak stage declines as channel capacity increases but is also increased as the upstream catchment responds more rapidly to rain. In fact, the two competing impacts tend to cancel out leaving flood peak stage relatively insensitive to riparian condition. However, the overbank duration of a flood and flow speeds (including wave celerity) were both found to be sensitive to vegetation condition; respectively increasing and decreasing with density of vegetation. The first stage of this research examines the magnitude of the vegetation contribution to overall channel roughness, and established a means to predict it. The features of the flow resistance generated by six plant types (mature trees; grasses; aquatic plants; flexible saplings; and large woody debris) were distilled from a comprehensive review of over 160 existing publications (Chapter 2).

A adsorção de PEO sobre as partículas de sílica levam a formação de sistemas semi-flexíveis, afetando significativamente a capacidade de redução de atrito hidrodinâmico / Abstract: When a very small amount (in the range of ppm) of a polymer with high-molecular weight is added in turbulent flow, it can cause drastic reduction of frictional drag. In turbulent flow, the velocity fluctuation (vortices) with large size distribution is observed. The small fluctuations are associated with the loss of kinetic energy of the liquid, due to its viscosity, and the drag reducing agents act in these structures. An interesting theory was developed by de Gennes to explain the drag reduction phenomenon. According to this theory, the frequencies in which the vortices are created and the stretching of the polymer chain must be in resonance, in order to avoid the growing of the cascade of vortices, decreasing the loss of the energy (due to the viscosity), and consequently promoting the drag reduction. Therefore, the flexibility of the macromolecule is very important. In this study two flexible polymers, poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, and polyacrylamide, PAM, were used, and two techniques: the impact of drops (splash) and rheometry were employed to investigate the theory of de Gennes. For splash, the drag reduction was studied using the images of the liquid deformation during the drop impact (in range of some mili-seconds) obtained in a very fast digital camera. The percentage of drag reduction was determined using the maximum height of the Rayleigh jet (one of the splash structures). This study allows us to correlate the dynamic of the liquid deformation and the stretching of the polymer chain. The drag reduction using rheometry is based on the torque necessary to keep the liquid in a specific rotation. The results using the rheometer are very reproducible, allowing the determination of drag reduction even in very low polymer concentration (such as 2 ppm). The polymer mechanical degradation, due to the high shear, was also investigated in the rotational rheometer. A kinetic model was proposed to compare the mechanical stability of both polymers. It was observed that intrinsically, the two polymers undergo degradation in the same rate. The studies in the rheometer also allow the investigation of the elastic effect of the drag reducer agents (according to the theory of de Gennes). They were developed by adding small amounts of colloidal silica particles (less than 1%). The adsorption of the PEO chain at the surfaces of the particle, results in a semi-flexible system, affecting the capability of the particle to promote drag reduction / Doutorado / Físico-Química / Doutor em Ciências

Araujo, Arianne Oliveira de January 2018 (has links)
Super-hydrophobicity is a characteristic found in several surfaces of nature, which gives them certain features such as self-cleaning. One of the most well-known examples of a super-hydrophobic self-cleaning surface is the one present on the Lotus leaf, that contains an important layer of air retention between the cavities of the surface. This layer of air retention between cavities is a characteristic of some superhydrophobic surfaces, and has attracted a lot of attention recently, from technological, economic and ecological fields. Some species have a surface that holds this layer of air for only a few hours or days. Other species, however, maintain that for long periods of time. One of the most complex surfaces is the floating fern Salvinia - able to maintain a stable air layer for several weeks, even when submerged in water. Several studies have been carried out to develop technologies able to keep the air retention on surface for long periods, as they have a great potential to be applied in the naval sector, for instance, because they could reduce the hydrodynamic drag when used in the coating of boats, also reducing fuel consumption. The aim of this work is to obtain, by mimicking Salvinia’s structure and its species, a super-hydrophobic air-layer retaining surface, capable of reducing hydrodynamic drag. For this purpose, coatings composed in two stages were developed: a base composed by polyamide fibers to generate roughness - applied by electrostatic flocking - and covered by an organosilane (hydrophobic) spray. Then, the properties of the coatings were characterized in terms of morphology, angle of contact, rolling angle and volume of air hold on the surface, as well as tests to check their hydrodynamic drag reduction capacity. The super-hydrophobic coatings developed in this work have presented an air layer on surface and the tests has shown a hydrodynamic drag reduction for of up to 30%.

It is known that surfactants spontaneously self-assemble through hydrophobic interactions in aqueous solutions generating supramolecular structures. The formation of these macrostructures can modify significantly the solution viscoelasticity. These structures differ from polymers because these systems are in a constant break and recombination process in a limited time scale dependent of its physical-chemistry properties. The effects of intense shear on aqueous solution of wormlike micelles formed by CTAB and sodium salicylate combination in different co-solute (NaSal) concentrations were studied. The experiments were performed in a rheometer, where the thermal stability of worm-like micelles was evaluated applying drag reduction studies that is a particular property of this supramolecular system. Three characteristic temperatures are observed, T0, T1 e T2, that correspond respectively to the chains fusion, break of fusion points and micelles break into minor fragments. The co-solute concentration directly affects the solutions thermal stability, as higher the co-solute/surfactant ratio as higher the micelles break temperature (T2). Other important factor is the shear rate, until certain limit, the higher the shear rates the higher T2. The behavior of shear induced structures (SIS), that is a characteristic property of these systems, was also studied using the rheometer where an intense shear was applied and then the relaxation behavior of the formed structures was monitored under shear. For better understanding of this behavior, a kinetic study as a function of the temperature was accomplished to verify the relaxation kinetics of the SIS to the initial structures. The temperature has a critical influence under the maintenance of shear induced structures, because the higher the temperature applied at the system the faster the return to the initial structures. Thus, Arrhenius model was applied to determine the activation energy from one of the steps / Mestrado / Físico-Química / Mestra em Química

Hydrodynamic Drag and Flow Visualization of IsoTruss Lattice Structures

Ayers, James T. 25 March 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Hydrodynamic drag testing was conducted for eleven different configurations of IsoTruss® lattice structures. Flow visualization of prototypical IsoTruss® wind towers was also performed using Particle Image Velocimetry instrumentation. The drag test and flow visualization specimens included 6-node and 8-node configurations, single and double-grid geometries, thick and thin member sizes, smooth and rough surface finishes, a helical-only structure, and a smaller outer diameter test specimen. Three sets of hydrodynamic drag tests were conducted in a closed-circuit water tunnel: 1) orientation drag tests, 2) water velocity drag tests, and 3) height variation drag tests. The orientation drag tests measured the hydrodynamic drag force of the IsoTruss® test specimens at five different orientations with an average water velocity of 1.43 mph (0.64 m/s). The water velocity drag tests measured the maximum drag for each IsoTruss® test specimen at water velocities ranging from 0.0 to an average 1.43 mph (0.64 m/s). Based on the average outer structure diameter of the IsoTruss® specimens, the water velocities corresponded to a Reynolds number range of 7,000 to 80,000. Based on the average member diameter, the corresponding Reynolds number spanned from 600 to 3,000. In addition, the height variation drag tests were performed by vertically extracting the IsoTruss® test specimens from the test section at four different immersed height levels, with a maximum immersed height of 7.22 in (18.1 cm). The height variation testing corresponded to a Froude number range of 0.40 to 0.90. The IsoTruss® specimens exhibited an average lower drag coefficient based on the projected cylindrical area than the smooth circular cylinder data throughout the Reynolds number and Froude number ranges. The drag coefficient based on solid member area showed no correlation when shown as a function of the solidity ratio. However, for the drag coefficient calculated from the solid member projected area, the data for all IsoTruss® test specimens collapsed to a 2nd order polynomial when presented as a function of the Froude number, with an R2 of 0.99. Conversely, no significant relationship was shown when the drag coefficient based on projected cylindrical area was plotted versus the Froude number. The hydrodynamic data was compared to aerodynamic data, and the orientation testing results were identical. The hydrodynamic data differed by an average of 17% compared to the non-dimensional aerodynamic results. The flow visualization research revealed that the velocity returned to 2% of the freestream velocity at 1.24 diameters upstream from the prototypical IsoTruss® wind tower. Likewise, the velocity returned to a maximum 4% of the freestream velocity at 0.94 diameters sidestream of the model IsoTruss® wind tower.

Modelling the nonlinear dynamics of polymer solutions in complex flows

Omowunmi, Sunday Chima January 2011 (has links)
The flow of polymer solutions in the high Elasticity number, El, regime in complex geometries may lead to strong viscoelastic behaviour and eventually become unstable as the Weissenberg number, Wi, is increased beyond a critical level. So far, the success of numerical simulations in predicting the highly non-linear behaviour of polymer solutions in complex flows has been limited. In this thesis, selected constitutive models are evaluated under the high El flow regime in the cross-slot and contraction benchmark flows using a numerical technique based on the finite volume method. The numerical technique is implemented within the OpenFOAM framework and thoroughly validated in the benchmark flow. A modification to the FENE dumbbell model based on the non-affine deformation of polymer solutions is proposed, which enabled the prediction of some non-linear material functions and also enhanced numerical stability, allowing a higher Wi to be attained. Asymmetric flow instability in the cross-slot flow has been studied. Time-dependent stability diagrams were constructed based on Wi and the strain, ε, both of which govern the stretching of a polymer chain. In the contraction flow, elastic instability is simulated for the first time in this geometry. Substantial time-dependent asymmetric flow patterns were predicted as seen in experiments. The effect of the contraction ratio is investigated through a stability diagram. Three-dimensional finite element simulations were also carried out to study the effect of the aspect ratio in the contraction flow of a Phan-Thien-Tanner fluid. The simulations suggest that a lip vortex mechanism is a signature for the onset of strong viscoelastic behaviour.
