Money and 'self' : towards a social psychology of money and its usage

Sonnenberg, Stefanie January 2003 (has links)
This thesis contends that the subjective meanings and value attached to money may, in part, be a function of identity-related norms and values. This proposed relationship between identity issues and monetary attitudes/behaviour is explored across a series of methodologically diverse studies. It is argued that psychological approaches to money, despite their efforts to the contrary, frequently concur with traditional economic models of human behaviour in so far as they rest on similarly static, de-contextualised notions of the self. The research described here aims to substitute these implicit assumptions about the nature of selfhood with a social psychological account of the 'self and thus with an explicit focus on subjective identification processes, ha doing so, the present approach draws on the Social Identity tradition. First, findings from an exploratory interview study illustrate a) that identity concerns are central for people's understandings of money, b) that the relationship between money and selfhood is dilemmatic, and c) that money meanings and usage relate to identity across different levels of abstractions (i.e. personal, social, human). Second, a series of experimental studies (based on predictions derived from the Social Identity model of the self) shows that attitudes towards money can vary as a function of both social identity salience and the comparative context in which a given identity is salient. The association between social identification, specific identity contents and monetary attitudes is also addressed. Finally, an exploration of the relationship between identity concerns and decision-making processes within a Prisoner's Dilemma-type setting indicates that identity and the social knowledge derived from it play a crucial role, not only with regard to how people attempt to meet their goals in this context but also in terms of how these goals are defined. The broader implication of these findings with regard to 'rational choice' models of human agency are discussed.

Lessing, A. C. (Anna Christina), 1947- 03 1900 (has links)
This study concerns the personality composition of the modest pupil in the senior secondary school. Two views of modesty are discussed in the literature, namely that it is a virtue and that it is a sign of inner uncertainty. An in-depth study is made of modesty as a personality characteristic and its influence on the pupil's relationship formation and self-actualisation. Modesty is associated with such personality characteristics as reserve, timidity, inhibition, unassertiveness and lack of arrogance. It implies an inability to promote oneself. Modesty is also a manifestation of social anxiety, self-conciousness, a fear of success and low self-evaluation. It handicaps the relationship formation and self-actualisation of pupils. The High School Personality Questionnaire was administered to a group of Standard 9 pupils in an empirical study. No typical personality profile could be compiled for modest pupils. Several personality 'characteristics emerged from the study which may be associated with modesty. / Educational Studies / M. Ed.

Silva, Larissa Rizzon da 08 August 2017 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2017-11-21T19:20:39Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Larissa Rizzon da Silva.pdf: 1952125 bytes, checksum: cd8b5d2c75a7e3139a6a79ed06b53c4c (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2017-11-21T19:20:39Z (GMT). For this, it was analyzed the linguistic theories of Saussure (2002, 2012), Jakobson (2003) and Benveniste (2005, 2006), since they contribute significantly to the rehabilitative treatment of language disorders, such as aphasia. It was also evaluated, with regard to the aphasia disorder, its etiology, its types, the degree of severity, the standard tests and the procedures adopted by the Sistema Único de Saúde (Health Unic System), to proceed with the referral of the patient to evaluation and phonoaudiological rehabilitation. Finally, it was analyzed the phonoaudiological therapy sessions of an aphasic person, developed in the public clinical scope, based on the linguistic and aphasia studies as mentioned above. It was concluded that, due to the degree of severity, due to the procedures adopted by the Sistema Único de Saúde (Health Unic System) and other factors, the brain-injured individual will hardly reconstruct their enunciative identity in this interventive field (sic).

Youth experiences of a holistic approach to personal transformation : a narrative inquiry

Meyer, Lucille Yvonne January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (DEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / Many youth experience some form of identity crisis as they transition into adulthood. This crisis is amplified in the lives of many working-class youth who have to contend with heading households owing to the absence or death of parents and a socioeconomic context of poverty, lack of access to quality learning opportunities, unemployment and deepening inequality. A recent analysis of youth unemployment statistics in South Africa shows that at the end of 2016, at least 7.5 million youth were not in employment, education or training (NEET), with a large percentage residing in the Western Cape. The growing NEET numbers present a huge problem to youth, communities and the state, as youth who are not in employment, education or training have a greater propensity to become disengaged and disconnected from self, family and social, economic, political and cultural activities, further minimising their opportunities for growth and development. Despite the growing NEET numbers, there remains a paucity of research on credible and sustainable solutions to the NEET crises, including research that gives credence to youth voice and experience. The key purpose of the study was to explore youth experiences of a holistic approach to personal transformation as one particular programmatic approach or developmental pathway for vulnerable youth. The imperative is to explore ways of addressing the current NEET crisis and simultaneously deepen the theory and practice of youth development. The study used an ecological perspective as its theoretical framework that illuminated the influence of relationships and contexts on the development of children and youth. A phenomenological approach was chosen as it was deemed best suited to exploring and understanding people’s perceptions and experiences of a particular phenomenon. Narrative inquiry was employed as the methodological framework to explore the views of five youth respondents and their parents or guardians. Techniques to enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of the data included triangulation, which was effected through the collection of two sets of data, an extensive literature review and use of a reflective journal. The findings illustrate that a holistic perspective, as one particular philosophical and programmatic approach to personal transformation, has the potential to foster connection with self and family, enhance the psychological capital of young people and provide the impetus for them to remain on a positive developmental trajectory. The significance of a holistic approach lies in its ability to recognise and integrate all dimensions of their being into the learning process and meet a variety of needs as a result of their particular socioeconomic and psychosocial realities.

Bregolin, Débora Bresolin 22 August 2018 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, CAPES / The transits of goods coming from the religious universe of African origins have pierced barriers and transmuted the boundaries between what is profane and sacred. Fashion, understood as language, full of signs, meanings, icon and elements become an important route for such transits. This dissertation, throughout the analysis of field work in three Brazilian city capitals – Salvador. Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre – aims to interpret their transits and their redeterminations for the elements of Candomblé that turn into dress codes and thus cross the borders of what is profane and of what is sacred. Therefore, the theories of Peirce (2015) and Leach (1978) are used to refer to the semiotic and anthropological analysis. In order to observe the "desacralization" of the Candomblé objects, this process is contextualized in terms of the postmodernity of Jameson (1996) and Harvey (1992). The ideas of flows and post-colonialism in Mbembe (2014) and Bhabha (1998) were also investigated as well as the individual concepts of Hall (2005), arriving at a new concept of singularities proposed by Albuquerque (2007). Finally, the theories of Certeau (1994) and the elaborations on metamorphoses of space by Pintaudi (2011) were used for a vision of the Public Markets, fundamental spaces of exchange and resignification.
