Critical competitive priorities and capabilities in a high cost environment

Stohm, Mikael, Berglund, Sonny January 2015 (has links)
Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is to identify the critical competitive priorities and capabilities that enables competitive manufacturing in the high cost environment of Sweden and how these can be improved to increase manufacturing performance. Method – The purpose of this thesis was achieved through two main research methods. First a systematic literature review was conducted in order to condensate the existing literature on competitive priorities and capabilities. Secondly a case study was conducted in order to examine the identified competitive priorities and capabilities in the context of a high cost environment. Findings – Initially, a set of articles were identified and included in the literature review. Through an analysis of the included articles, a framework was created including competitive priorities and competitive capabilities. A comparison between the framework and the empirical data collected at the case company identified a number of priorities and capabilities considered critical for competitive manufacturing in a high cost environment. The literature review revealed a set of improvement actions and methods that could be used to improve the identified critical competitive priorities and capabilities in order to increase manufacturing performance. Implications – The thesis makes a theoretical contribution by condensing the existing literature on competitive priorities and capabilities in a high cost environment, and creates a starting point for future research. Further it makes a practical contribution by providing awareness for practitioners regarding priorities and capabilities, what may be important in the future, and how these could be improved. Limitations – This study identifies how critical priorities and capabilities can be improved, however, it does not specify how they can or should be applied and used. Additionally, the inclusion criteria in the systematic literature review did not include improvement actions and thus other suggestions for improvements may not be included. The case study was limited to one company, making the result difficult to generalize.

Método de seleção de ações de melhoria: alcançando os objetivos estratégicos no Processo de Desenvolvimento de Produtos por meio do Gerenciamento de Processos de Negócio / Method of improvement actions selection: reaching the strategic objectives in the New Product Development through Business Process Management

Fernandes, Sânia da Costa 18 January 2017 (has links)
The Business Process Management (BPM) is a structured approach that supports companies to improve their core processes, among which stands out the new product development (NPD). However, the literature is scarce of a systemic orientation to guide the selection of improvement actions for NPD in order to consider the strategic objectives of the process. Usually the focus of actions is only on overcoming shortcomings relative to the current situation. The aim of this research is to develop a method of selecting improvement actions for NPD that considers both the diagnosis of the current situation and the future situation desired for the process. The methodological approach called Design Research Methodology (DRM) is used to drive the development of the research, and two case studies were applied to evaluate the application of the method. It consists of four stages, which are the definition of the strategic objectives, the analysis of the problems that occur in NPD, the evaluation of improvement actions, and the prioritization of them in accordance with the time, the complexity of the actions and the resources involved to implement them. This proposal also uses the NPD good practices to define the improvement actions, and applies the roadmapping for mapping, selecting and prioritizing the actions. The novelty of the method is the integration of the NPD\'s strategic objectives into improvement programs, extending the traditional improvement model associated with the BPM approach. The results of the application of the method indicate that it is a stimulus for the companies to reach the strategic alignment in the PDP and to apply new managerial and technical practices in order to improve the performance of the process.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Mario Sierra_Final aprovado.docx: 1504580 bytes, checksum: a023d401b8aee546043b4e9d5ea9e450 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-11-09 / This research aimed to identify the main investment barriers for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Oil and Gas in Colombia. The first part of the research was the literature review in which the Survey from the Fraser Institute was selected as the primary source of information. This Survey had global coverage and measured 16 factors that are consider critical for investment decisions. Among them, five factors were selected Security, Infrastructure, Disputed Land Claims, Labor Regulation/Employment Agreement and Protected Areas which had negative responses over 50 %. Through interviews with six high executives, one from each Oil Associations of Colombia (Acipet, ACP, ANDI and Campetrol ), one from an Regional Oil Company and one from Oil Service Company, it was possible to get opinions about trends and improvement actions to eliminate investment barriers in the country. Using the content analysis from Bardin, the interviews were reviewed to identify similarities and differences about trends and actions that the government could take to become an effective enabler of FDI in Oil and Gas in Colombia. Main similarities of the interviews were regarding the importance of social development in Oil areas in the country. Most of the barriers in the sectors have as a root cause extreme poverty and poor education. There will not be sustainability on oil exploration and production on those areas if the people do not have basic needs cover and when they depend 100% on non-renewal resource. The government should develop initiative that promote agricultural development in oil areas through education and productivity program. This will have a significant impact on security and facilitate previous consultation project.

Orientador: Olivio Novaski / Dissertação (mestrado profissional) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Mecanica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-05T23:28:35Z (GMT). Com isto, será possível avaliar o potencial da ISO 9001:2000 como instrumento de canalização de esforços para a melhoria / Abstract: The aim of this research paper is to evaluate ISO 9001:2000 version as a catalyst for improvement programs. Keeping the detailed data on process management brought up by the 94 version, ISO 9001:2000 emphasizes the concept of continuous improvement, presenting a new challenge to those who try to implement it. For such an effort, some settlements are needed in order to meet all the new version requirements, and the improvement programs started in the target-unit have such goal, and their results have directly reflected upon the unit performance indicators. This effect on the indicators will be more clearly evaluated by comparing historical data related to process (rejection, waste, serviceability, productivity and improvement programs) and to customer satisfaction (customer complaints related to manufacturing process and internal customer satisfaction) established considering 94 version and the numbers achieved after the actions focused on the new ISO version took place. Particularly concerning to norms, a literature review will be done, embracing a comparison between the two versions, paying special attention to what the 2000 version ¿ focused on continuous improvement ¿ brings as differential over the previous one. A brief explanation on the concept of continuous improvement ¿ core of the 2000 version ¿ will also be part of this paper considering the norm and experts contributions, and on the use and relevance of indicators. Based on that, it will be possible to evaluate the potential of ISO 9001:2000 as a tool to canalize improvement efforts / Mestrado / Gestão da Qualidade Total / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica
