The Larz and Isabel Anderson House, Washington, D. C., by Little and Browne (1902-1905)Cooper, Lynda 30 April 2014 (has links)
In 1902, Larz Anderson III, a Washington diplomat, and his wife, Isabel Weld Perkins Anderson, a Boston author, commissioned the Boston architects Arthur Little and Herbert W. C. Browne to design their winter residence in the District of Columbia. Completed in 1905, this Beaux-Arts mansion now serves as an historic house museum and as the national headquarters for the Society of the Cincinnati, a patriotic organization established by Revolutionary War officers in 1783. Larz Anderson was a member and a descendant of one of the founders of the Society. The fact that Anderson House was designated a national historic landmark in 1996 indicates that it is worthy of national recognition, yet the architectural and historical significance of this socially and politically important building has not been fully investigated. This dissertation examines the edifice by focusing on its patrons, families, architects, design, art collection, and mural paintings.

A visible darkness : The Owl House of Nieu Bethesda.De Villiers, Marguerite 12 September 2014 (has links)
The idea of rumours as oral history, the appeal of an apparently isolated community, and the
social and economic value of small towns in present day South Africa is what attracted me
to Nieu Bethesda and the Owl House. My research report is divided into three chapters:
economic viability, rumour as oral history, and race relations. I look at what constitutes the
Nieu Bethesda brand; how it is formulated, marketed, sold, and received, the manner in
which rumours could be seen as historical sources as well as value-producing acts, and the
role of race relations in determining who benefits from or is able to capitalise on the tourism
generated in Nieu Bethesda. I am not interested in proving or disproving stories, but rather
extracting their social value in contributing to the brand identity. Nieu Bethesda is a
microcosm that allows us to understand the broader South African context as well as the
relationship between ideas of the country and ideas of the city. My fieldwork took place
during March, June, July and September of 2013 as well as preliminary fieldwork conducted
in November and December of the previous year. The methods used include participantobservation,
in-depth interviews, and documentation through photographs.

Collecting Memories: Rachel Whiteread’s House and Memory in Contemporary LondonDunn, Stephanie 18 August 2015 (has links)
Contemporary British artist Rachel Whiteread is celebrated for her ability to cast everyday objects that force the viewer to think about the spaces they typically ignore. House, one of Whiteread’s most well known and written about sculptures was created in 1993. House considered issues of memory in contemporary London, specifically parts of London that are experiencing drastic amounts of change. Current scholars understand House as a memorial, and while this thesis agrees with this interpretation, it also considers House as part of a group memorial with Whiteread’s other sculptural works created before and in 1993. This thesis begins by contextualizing Whiteread’s artistic practice in current scholarship and argues for further evaluation of House. After a thorough examination of the creation, destruction, and reception of House, I analyze current scholarship on the sculpture and consider the similar themes through Whiteread’s early work to prove their ability to act as a group memorial.

The changing use of materials in construction of the vernacular Thai housePunpairoj, Poomchai January 2013 (has links)
Due to the processes of modernization, the existing traditional Thai houses have been changed from tradition to contemporary. Contemporary vernacular houses in the central Thailand are categorised as transforming and reproduction houses. This study focused on three types of vernacular houses in the central region: the traditional Thai house; the transforming Thai house; and the reproduction Thai house. This study examined the features in these contemporary vernacular houses which have been influenced by changing use of materials and construction methods. The study was conducted by examining the changes of vernacular houses in three locations in Ayutthaya province: the urban district village, the rural village and the motorway buffer area. Data were collected with the uses of materials, construction types, and features of construction elements. The data obtained were analyzed and discussed through typological analysis and constant comparative analysis to reveal the differences of vernacular houses among the studied locations. The findings show the ways in which vernacular traditions have been integrated with modern influences. The development and change of use of materials are indicated for reflecting the evolution of vernacular Thai houses. The results reveal that, from the earliest period of modern Thai industry, contemporary vernacular Thai housing has been influenced by materials available and construction methods employed. Industrial materials have been used to improve the performance and change the appearance of the traditional Thai houses. Because of the availability of early industrial materials and construction methods, the transforming Thai houses will therefore continue to be sustained by their current owners. Traditional and modern materials are applied to the reproduction Thai houses with updated construction techniques. Vernacular Thai houses are confirmed as a continuous process and appreciated in the context of the present. The results of this study offers some clues to support an understanding of living heritage, and thus promoting conservation of vernacular buildings in Thailand.

'Ik ben zo blij dat ik hier ben' (translation) 'I am so glad that I am here'Femia, Angela January 2007 (has links)
Master of Visual Art (Sculpture) / This paper is a brief consideration of the nature of my art practice. It seeks to discover the importance of memory to the spatial, emotional and political constructs that inform my understanding of place. Within the broader context of the Australian immigrant experience, history and personal memories are explored by looking into the notion of domestic space as embodied by the house and its relationship to the home. The female role in the family is discussed in terms of the commonly understood stereotypes associated with home in western society. By traversing a range of ideas from philosophical and scientific domains, with a focus on contemporary art, the significance of memory is highlighted as the thread that holds these notions together.
