Implementing a competing limit increase challenger strategy to a retail - banking segment / Derrick Nolan

Today, many financial institutions extending credit rely on automated credit scorecard decision engines to drive credit strategies that are used to allocate (application scoring) and manage (behavioural scoring) credit limits. The accuracy and predictive power of these models are meticulously monitored, to ensure that they deliver the required separation between good (non-delinquent) accounts and bad (delinquent) accounts. The strategies associated to the scores (champion strategies) produced using the scorecards, are monitored on a quarterly basis (minimum), ensuring that the limit allocated to a customer, with its associated risk, is still providing the lender with the best returns on their appetite for risk. The strategy monitoring opportunity should be used to identify possible clusters of customers that are not producing the optimal returns for the lender. The identified existing strategy (champion) that does not return the desired output is challenged with an alternative strategy that may or may not result in better results. These clusters should have a relatively low credit risk ranking, be credit hungry, and have the capacity to service the debt. This research project focuses on the management of (behavioural) strategies that manage the ongoing limit increases provided to current account holders. Utilising a combination of the behavioural scores and credit turnover, an optimal recommended or confidential limit is calculated for the customer. Once the new limits are calculated, a sample is randomly selected from the cluster of customers and tested in the operational environment. With the implementation of the challenger, strategy should ensure that the intended change on the customer's limit is well received by the customers. Measures that can be used are risk, response, retention, and revenue. The champion and challenger strategies are monitored over a period until a victor (if there is one) can be identified. It is expected that the challenger strategy should have a minimal impact on the customers affected by the experiment and that the bank should not experience greater credit risk from the increased limits. The profit from the challenger should increase the interest revenue earned from the increased limit. The first part focuses on the analysis of existing machining technology in terms of technology, as well as an analysis of time consumed for assessing the effectiveness of the current machining process. The second part of the thesis focuses on the design of innovative technology machining of components and design postprocessor for manufacturing equipment VMC ZPS 560. In conclusion, both variants of production are evaluated. They developed the analyses of time consumed for the production of components and production costs.

Experimental Investigation of Snapover: The Sudden Increase of Plasma Current Drawn to a Positively Biased Conductor When Surrounded by a Dielectric

Snapover is particularly relevant to Earth-orbiting spacecraft powered by high-voltage solar arrays. During snapover, the current collected by a positively biased conductor that is immersed in a plasma suddenly increases when two conditions are met: i) there is an immediately adjacent insulator; ii) the conductor exceeds a positive threshold voltage with respect to the plasma. The enhanced current develops as a consequence of the insulator, either through secondary electron (SE) emission or by material ionization. Experiments were performed to examine snapover onset potential and current collection dependence on conductor and insulator materials, conductor size and shape, sample history, biasing rate, and contamination and smoothness of the dielectric surface. Numerous current jumps were observed between applied voltages of 100 V and 1000 V. Both surface roughening and surface coatings were found to inhibit snapover. In general, the results did not support previous simple interpretations of the SE model.

Implementation of Online Tutoring Program to Increase University Student Information Retention

Online tutoring program, Mastering Nutrition©, was implemented as a required portion of an entry level collegiate nutrition course. The Mastering Nutrition program incorporates effective teaching pedagogies that initiate information transfer and retention. To test the ability of tutoring program to increase student learning outcomes, a set of questions specific to course learning objectives were asked of students in two consecutive semesters. Questions were administered to students in a pretest, in the final exam, and in a posttest 4-6 months after course completion. Repeated measures analysis of variance reported no significant difference for posttest scores when compared to control scores, p=.595. Pretest data compared to posttest data indicated improvement in student outcomes on the final test for students with the lowest preliminary scores with implementation of Mastery©.

Analysis of Undergraduate Grade Trends at Brigham Young University Across a 20-Year Period

Grades awarded to undergraduate students at Brigham Young University over a 20-year period were analyzed to determine to what extent the mean GPA may have increased. Study variables included enrolled freshman mean ACT, enrolled freshman mean AP credits, faculty research productivity, student evaluations of teaching (SET), and a university policy change regarding course withdrawal dates and calculating students' mean GPA. Other study variables included the overall grading philosophy of the college or school (normative, mastery, or other) and the course level (upper division, lower division). The study employed a regression model with splines for the residual, or yearly trend. Upper division courses have higher mean GPA than lower division courses, and mean GPA in mastery-based grading colleges are higher than in normative-based grading colleges. Mean GPA in upper division courses are consistently higher than mean GPA of lower courses, regardless of college grouping, but the difference between the upper and lower division mean GPA scores of the normative-grading classification is significantly larger than the difference between upper and lower division mean GPA of the other two grading classifications. Faculty research productivity had no impact on mean GPA. SET scores are highly correlated with college grading philosophy and course level and did not further predict mean GPA. The university policy change had no statistically significant effect on most mean GPA, but there is a marginally significant negative local effect on mean GPA of the lower division normative courses, as well as a marginally significant positive effect on mean GPA of lower division mastery courses. Grade trends vary between colleges with differing grading philosophies. They also likely vary across departments within colleges and from course to course within departments. Trends also differ between course level. Except for the non-significant effect of the policy change, mean GPA trends across most categories at the university have leveled off for more than a decade and are likely to remain so. Study results indicate there is no reason for alarm and that no systemic, rampant pattern of grade inflation is evident.

Effects of Same-day Strength Training on Bat Swing Velocity of Male Collegiate Baseball Players

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of same-day strength training on bat swing velocity of male collegiate baseball players. Sixteen male baseball players engaged in a preseason strength training program designed by the team's strength and conditioning coach. All subjects were tested for bat swing peak velocity immediately prior to ball impact for a non lifting day (NLD) by recording 10 swings with 30 seconds of rest in between swings. The next day, a lifting day (LD), all subjects tested on the NLD were tested four to six hours after the morning lifting session with the same amount of swings and rest. Six Vicon MX13+ infrared cameras (Vicon-Colorado, Centennial, Colorado), running at 400 Hz, were placed around the swinging area using Nexus 1.2 imaging software to download and determine bat swing peak velocity immediately prior to ball impact. The average of the top six bat swing peak velocity test results, for each subject, was compared to measures taken on the NLD and LD. A matched t-test revealed a significant difference in bat swing peak velocity between a NLD and a LD. A mean bat swing difference between NLD (69.18) and LD (70.86) of 1.68 was statistically different at better than the .05 level [p =.021]. This study suggests that male collegiate baseball players should be able to engage in a designed strength training program with a positive effect, and without any negative effect, on bat swing peak velocity when a strength training session is scheduled on the same day as a baseball competition.

Effect Of Horizontal Piles On The Soil Bearing Capacity For Circular Footing Above Cavity

The design of foundation in normal soil conditions is governed by bearing capacity, minimum depth of foundation and settlement. However, foundation design in karst regions needs to consider an additional criterion associated to the possibility of subsurface subsidence and ravelling sinkholes. Under this environment, alternative techniques are needed to improve the subsurface soil. In this study general background information is given to understand the geological characteristics of Central Florida and why this area is considered to be a karst region and susceptible to sinkholes formation. Traditional foundation design techniques on karst regions are addressed in this paper. Finally, the use of a network of three subsurface horizontal piles is proposed and the effect on stress increase and soil bearing capacity for footing due to the horizontal piles is investigated. Finite element computer software is used to analyze the stress distribution under different conditions and the results are discussed. The objective of this study is to determine whether or not horizontal piles under a circular footing at the sinkhole site is a viable solution to reduce the stress increase in the soil induced by the footing load. The horizontal piles located at a certain depth below the center of the footing intercepts the cone of pressure due to the footing load. Also, it is the purpose of this research to determine the effect on the soil bearing capacity for footing due to the proposed horizontal piles at the sinkhole prone area. In 1983 Baus, R.L and Wang, M.C published a research paper on soil bearing capacity for strip footing above voids. In their research, a chart for soil bearing capacity for strip footing located above a void was presented. However, in this paper we present a chart for circular footing size as a function void location and a design chart for circular footing size with a network of three underground piles. The result indicates that with the horizontal piles placed above the cavity, the stress increase caused by the footing load substantially decreases as compared to the situation of no horizontal piles, thus increases the soil bearing capacity for the normal design of footing size. The approach of using the horizontal piles placed in between the footing and the subsurface cavity is a new concept that has not been experienced previously. The results are strictly based on the analytical model of finite element program. Before full implementation for the construction practice, further research and experimental work should be conducted.
