Do desenho industrial ao design no Brasil: uma bibliografia crítica para a disciplina / From industrial design to design: a critical bibliography to the subject

Milene Soares Cará 28 May 2008 (has links)
From industrial design to design - a critical bibliography to the subject presents a bibliographic or anthological character, which has as one of its main goals become a basis point for future related research through the construction of a significant repertoire of information, supported on three basic parameters: articles, exhibitions and guidelines for teaching the subject. Therefore, it is an inventory of theoretical and cultural production, during 50s, 60s and 70s. From this broad panorama, the most significant articles for the construction and definition of the field of knowledge are highlighted and analyzed. It is in the sixties that the historiography on contemporary architecture and design panorama is improved with new and more attentive contributions to consider the importance and the conquers of the modern movement. At the same time, is also possible to identify a crisis of the concept of industrial design. In this same period, the international literature leave behind nomenclatures as industrial design, which was translated as desenho industrial, focused on the design of the product. The English word design will be used with wider meaning, including the complex relationships between production and technological, social, political, psychological aspects that surrounds the final result product. The work tries to understand the process of the construction of the concept of industrial design based in the modernist models and identify, from the sixties and seventies, as this crisis gets in the brazilian scene. The purpose of establish a repertoire of bibliographic references and contribute to the reflection on the meaning of this subject nowadays do not intend to establish a definition for the questions here presented, but just to contribute to the reflection on the topics in this country, highlighting the complexity of the debate, expanding the discussion on the parameters which should support the practice and teaching of the subject in Brazil.

Leto: A Work-life Balance System Designed for Mothers in Dual-earner Families

Yunran Ju (10725243) 01 June 2021 (has links)
This project aims to build a system that helps users achieve a delicate work-life balance and decrease stress. Evidence shows that most dual-earner families currently live in multitasking contexts. The increase of multitasking behaviors and experiences among working mothers has led to negative emotions, stress, and work-family conflict. Studies have confirmed that balancing work and family is challenging for parents. After the COVID-19 pandemic, work-life balance became more challenging to achieve. Due to gender inequality, research shows that telecommuting mothers report feelings of depression and anxiety much more than fathers. The study highlights work-life conflict experiences with working mothers through qualitative and quantitative approaches involving specific numbers of interviews and online surveys. Based on research, I developed the system Leto, an application and product design to help mothers in dual-earner families build a better inner and outer system. Further, the design combines functions of the mother community, reminders, customized schedules, and a stress reliever. The design outcome was prototyped and assessed through a heuristic evaluation.

Artificial Intelligence in the Industrial Design Process / Artificiell Intelligens i Processen för Industriell Design

Jonasson, Hugo January 2023 (has links)
This report covers the subject and impact of utilizing artificial intelligence tools for image generation in the process for industrial design. By evaluating the tools available on the market at the time of writing the report establishes a toolbox of relevant tools to the design process. These tools are then used to restructure established design processes into a new process and set of guidelines that incorporate these tools as a central part of the design process. The report then covers the “test run” of this process by developing a concept product, which in this case is a camera for a specific brand. Finally, the report covers the implications and potential further developments needed in order to fully incorporate artificial intelligence in the design process, along with potential ethical implications of utilizing these tools to aid in the creation of commercial products.

An activity-based cost model for design-concurrent calculation

Wiegmann, Dirk 03 March 2009 (has links)
This research develops the concepts as well as a "case study” implementation of a cost model that estimates the costs of product design alternatives during the design process. This cost information, regarding design alternatives, is for decision making purposes. With the help of this cost model, the designer can better approximate that product form which results in the lowest costs of production, i.e., for which the sum of material costs and activity costs are minimized. The cost model integrates similarity analysis into an enhanced version of an activity-based cost management system. The similarity analysis is required because the details of a product's bill of materials and bill of activities are not yet available during the design process; however, such information provides the basis for any activity-based cost calculation. In a first step the cost model determines which of the existing products, based upon their cost driving characteristics, belong to the same product family as the design alternative. For these products detailed information is available, thus they can be used as reference products for the similarity analysis. These existing products are calculated as if they were the design alternative, hence they follow the decision costs principle; i.e., costs that will appear in the future but were determined in the past are not relevant for a particular decision. Subsequently, those reference products - as calculated on the basis of decision costs for the respective design - are utilized in a regression analysis. This analysis approximates the functional relationship between the product's cost driving characteristics and its costs, so that, finally, the costs for the design alternative in question can be estimated based on its characteristics. / Master of Science

A unified approach to structure and controller design optimizations

Lim, Kyong Been January 1986 (has links)
A unified approach to structure and controller design optimization is examined. Difficult problems arise in a unified approach, namely, a high dimensioned design space, nonlinearity, complexity of constraints and many inequality constraints. As a candidate for overcoming the above problems, an optimization algorithm utilizing sequential linear programming and continuation methods is proposed. The second part of this dissertation examines various ideas associated with both theory and practical issues arising in optimizing for eigenvalue sensitivity and stability robustness with respect to parameter variations or unstructured uncertainties. In particular, the time domain approach to stability robustness is pursued. It is found that a recently proposed stability robustness criteria of Patel and Toda is related to well known concepts of numerical conditioning of the eigenvalue problem and may be derived concisely using eigenvalue conditioning concepts. In addition, we review the more direct and perhaps less rigorous approach of dealing with uncertainties, namely modal insensitivity theory. The mathematical conditions for achieving modal insensitivity and eigenvalue placement simultaneously are reviewed along with a discussion of the practical merit of these ideas. As an alternative, we derive a scalar measure of eigenvalue sensitivity which is a linearly predicted bound on weighted eigenvalue perturbation; we also introduce an algorithm for minimization of this index. Furthermore, the expressions for eigenvector derivatives are correctly derived for non-self-adjoint case. This latter contribution corrects errors present in at least two textbooks on the subject and serves to clear up confusion in the literature. Finally, we use examples to demonstrate the design algorithm proposed here and numerically examine various designs arising from corresponding cost functions, using a specific configuration (a flexible free-free beam with an attached rigid body.) The numerical results confirm the conservatism of the stability robustness bound for highly structured perturbations but nevertheless clearly supports the hypothesis that maximizing the robustness measure significantly increases the true robustness of a closed loop system. The numerical results also indicate that maximizing the stability robustness measure is better (more efficient computationally and produces more robust designs) than minimizing the eigenvalue sensitivities directly for improving true stability robustness with respect to perturbations in the closed loop system matrix. / Ph.
