Hand gestures as communication facilitators in design: a research based design study to understand the role of hand gestures during group design communication

Rathi, Ritesh 09 April 2009 (has links)
The design discipline is reliant on communication as a means to express and share ideas during the creation of products. Design communication can take place in two distinct settings: formal communication presentations and informal interaction communication. Group design communication involves the communication of various attributes of a design. Attributes such as the scale, shape and functionality of a product are communicated. Designers employ various mechanisms including verbal, non-verbal (e.g. hand gestures), and physical tools (e.g. sketches and models) to communicate attributes. Although the verbal and physical tools are commonly used effective tools, hand gestures remain underused. Yet, hand gestures are extensions of the human mind, which may reveal thoughts that verbal communication may not be able to communicate (McNeil, 1992). Hand gestures have the potential to reveal thoughts and if used as an interface mechanism, can augment the information space. As such, hand gestures may facilitate design communication within a group. This study explores the potential of hand gestures as tools in design communication. Moreover; the purpose of this study is to understand how gestures can facilitate the design communication that occurs within a group. A two-phase study was proposed: a research phase and a design phase. During the research phase, ethnographic research in design education environments was conducted to understand what gestures are produced and how they are used during formal and informal design communication settings. The data collected was analyzed and categorized to reveal quantitative and qualitative results. Survey studies were also conducted to validate the hand gesture meaning. The data was used to create design guidelines that directed the design phase, where concepts used hand gestures as interface mechanisms, to augment the experience of a design information exchange. The significance of this project is to generate new knowledge to be applied to the development of more natural technological systems where gestures are used as an alternative to current input devices (e.g. mouse and keyboard) for navigation and manipulation of design material amongst a group. The goal was to improve the communication between designers and their materials and enhance the experience of distributing and receiving design information.

New generation ironing board for compact living / Nya generationens strykbräda för compact living

Lang, Johanna January 2016 (has links)
This report describes the product development thesis that was conducted as an end project in the Master programme Industrial Design at Jönköping University. The thesis has been about developing, designing and building an ironing board for compact living. The name for the product that has been developed is UNI and it is a multifunctional ironing board which can either be mounted on the wall or hanged over the door. When the ironing board is not in used, it can be folded up and will then act as a mirror. When the ironing board is folded down, parts of the mirrors frame will be folded down and act like a supporting leg for the ironing board. On the inside is shelves and hooks mounted. Here can the owner store small things like keys and jewelleries. To get the best final result, have the design process Bootcamp Bootleg been used. This design process is divided in to five different stages where different methods are used to help with moving the project forward. The CAD-programme SolidWorks 2014 was used to create the CAD-models and the renderings where made in the rendering programme Keyshot 5. The physical model which was made during this thesis, was made in a scale of 1:1. The materials that were used for the model were hard foam, metal, wood, acrylic mirror, wadding and fabric. This thesis has been performed in collaboration with the company Rörets Industrier AB located in Jönköping, Sweden.

Právní ochrana designu se zaměřením na módní průmysl / Legal protection of design focusing on fashion industry

Tomášková, Lucie January 2015 (has links)
This thesis focuses on definition of all possibilities of legal protection of design relating to the fashion industry and fashion design. Thesis defines term design, its fundamental types, typical characters and special features. Next part deals with design as the immaterial thing, as the thing in legal sense and its categorization due to adoption of New Civil Code and broader concept of the thing in legal sense differentiating on material and immaterial. From the area of forms of legal protection thesis pursues particularly protection through copyright, industrial designs, trademarks and unfair competition. Simultaneously it compares the relationship of protection through copyright and industrial designs as well as industrial designs and trademarks. Another part is dedicated to public and private legal means which designer may use providing that there is interference with his rights. Apart from specification of forms and means of legal protection, which are available in the Czech Republic, this thesis aims to describe opportunities of designer in the international area and area of the European Union. Thesis concerns registered and unregistered industrial design from the point of view of the European Union, from the international area it mentions all international agreements important for...

Automated intelligent electric engine design (AIEED) application

Minucci, Giuliano Antonio Vincenzo January 2018 (has links)
A research report submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s in Engineering to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, School of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2018 / The automotive industry is experiencing a major transition with regards to powertrain where the traditional internal combustion engine is being replaced by hybrid or all-electric solutions. As a result of this transition, many powertrain engineering firms, such as Integral Powertrain, are required to adapt or develop tools to improve the quality and time to respond to the rapid increase in new electric motor enquiries. This paper details the development of the foundations of a software tool (AIEED) used to improve the time and quality of response to new motor enquiries. The foundations of the AIEED tool are built into a Microsoft Excel document which contains the necessary logic required to convert customer requirements data into geometrical design data. A series of macros are included in the tool which allow for the automated generation of a first-level computer-aided design (CAD) model of the motor, including the following components; stator, windings, rotor, magnets, housing and cover. The CAD models, which serve to improve the quality of response to new motor enquiries and provide a basis for further detailed development, are generated on the CATIA V5 design platform. In addition, the tool makes use of the CAD model to determine the estimate cost of the unit based on average material costs per unit mass defined in the materials database stored in the tool. It is estimated that the AIEED tool reduces the response time to new motor enquires by 75%. Certain assumptions and limitations have been applied such that the foundations of the tool only include support for the following motor specifications: Surface Permanent Magnet Alternating Current cylindrical radial flux motors (external stator and internal rotor). • The units are designed for 3-phase supply. • The winding configuration is limited to concentrated double layer option. • Parallel tooth, arc-bottom, semi-closed stator slot profiles. • Arc-shaped radially magnetised surface magnet rotor configuration option. A simple data verification filter is applied to minimise the potential for invalid inputs. However, a full validation and verification process is recommended for future work. In addition, it is recommended that the tool be expanded to support additional motor types and specifications as well as package the foundations into a single, easy-to-use utility. / XL2019
