A feasibility study for increasing the production of residential earthen-shelters

Mitchell, Joseph L. January 1982 (has links)
This thesis has inquired as to the social and economic factors which are necessary for an industrialization process. The study has concentrated on defining industrialization and building systems; the chronological development of earthen-shelters; and the energy, contractor, and financing issues which are prevalent in the existing earthen-sheltered housing market. In addition, the thesis addresses issues such as the social perception of earthen-sheltered space, comparative cost analysis to conventional housing, and land development ethics. / Department of Landscape Architecture

Investigating Economic Inequality And Voter Turnout In The Industrialized Democracies

Freeman, Benjamin 01 January 2005 (has links)
This paper investigates economic inequality and voter turnout in a sample of 21 industrialized democracies using a pooled time series model of elections from 1970 to 1999. The findings demonstrate a connection between inequality and voter turnout wherein increases in inequality lead to reductions in voter turnout. The ramifications for democratic accountability and representative democracy are discussed.

Systems flexibility and user choice in the housing process

Skubel, Stewart Anthony January 1982 (has links)
The implementation of a flexible housing system relies upon a synthesis of many factors. Of these, the relationships between society, technology, and economics are fundamental. For a flexible housing concept to be successful, it must necessarily respond to the inevitability of social and technological change, while also being an affordable alternative to the escalating costs of conventional housing. This thesis explores the issues, components, and planning strategies essential to the development of an industrialized system which can, in turn, respond to changing user needs over time. / Master of Architecture

An assessment of the potential of the United States stick-built house for self-help construction

Takase, Yutaka January 1981 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1981. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 122-124). / This thesis initially focuses on the development of the U.S. stick-built house. The material and construction methods of the structure remain simple and unchanged, whereas the non-structural elements offer an enormous variety of choices in materials and components as a result of the improvements in technology . In Chapter 2, a case study of the U.S. system suggests that the stick-built house has a great potential for self-help construction, with least subcontracting, rental of some special tools and equipment and the use of prefabricated materials. A comparison of the U.S. and Japanese systems shows that the Japanese system offers lesser potential for self-help . On the average, higher skills would be required in on-site assembly. Difficulties would occur in using members of different sizes and joining methods. Also, there would be less flexibility in future change of housing design. The author recommends greater simplification of structural members for production and construction methods in Japan. / by Yutaka Takase. / M.S.
