Previous issue date: 2013-08-23 / The aim of this work is to verify if and to what extent the pragmatic aspects of
grammar (pragmalinguistics) are covered in some units of an English Language
Teaching textbook used in Brazil. We also aim to delineate the role of grammar in
this material and, based on the analyzed units, present reflections on the possibilities
of contributing to the teaching-learning of pragmalinguistics. We consider the
proposal of the material as we verify the activities according to theories that approach
grammar as a skill (BATSTONE, 1994 and LARSEN-FREEMAN, 2003), pragmatics
(KASPER and ROSE, 2001) and principled materials development (TOMLINSON,
2010, HARWOOD, 2010). It is observed that the present textbook does not approach
pragmalinguistics. Instead, it focuses on grammar as product. Due to this factor,
learners are not presented with opportunities to reflect upon language usage. / O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar se, e em caso afirmativo como, os
aspectos pragmáticos da gramática (pragmalinguística) são contemplados em um
livro didático de inglês como LE comercializado internacionalmente e utilizado no
Brasil. Objetivamos também retratar o papel designado à gramática neste material e
apresentar reflexões sobre possibilidades de contribuir com o ensino-aprendizagem
de pragmalinguística, a partir das unidades analisadas. Analisamos a proposta

Previous issue date: 2016-04-08 / This study aims at investigating in what ways the work with the flipped classroom (a
procedure through which students should study specific parts of the course content at home,
through videos, for example, before they are discussed in the classroom) can help English as a
foreign language students become more autonomous in their learning process. It also aims at
analyzing the perceptions of the students and the teacher-researcher after they have worked
under the flipped classroom model. This qualitative case study research was carried out at the
Language Center at the Federal University of Goiás. 14 learners, mostly university students,
and the teacher-researcher participated in the research. The data collection instruments were a
questionnaire applied to students before they started working with the flipped classroom, an
interview with the learners which was conducted by the end of the term, three video recorded
classes and the field notes created by the teacher-researcher. The results showed that the
learners displayed various signs of developing autonomy and a high level of cooperation
throughout the classes. Their perceptions regarding the work with the flipped classroom were,
for the most part, positive: many of them said they benefitted from being able to access the
class content beforehand, and other learners stated that they preferred the flipped classes,
since they were more dynamic. Some of the negative perceptions regard the fact that
oftentimes they would forget to watch the videos, since they were not used to working under
this technique. The teacher-researcher also benefitted from the work with the flipped
classroom, mostly because it proved to be challenging and stimulating. In the final thoughts
section, we discuss aspects such as the necessity of the teacher carefully performing an
evaluation of their class before starting the work with the flipped classroom. This should be
done in order to ensure all students have access to the materials and that they know what is
expected from them in this way of having classes, which is probably new to them.
A professorapesquisadora

Previous issue date: 2014-12-18 / This study aims to investigate the perception that Portuguese speakers, from the southern
region of Brazil, have from different meanings conveyed by the intonation, arising from
different prominences, of English negative imperative sentences. Concerning the prosodic
characterization, there is the analysis of Phonological (ıs) and Intonation (Is) Phrases based
on the theoretical framework of Prosodic Phonology of Nespor and Vogel (1986); it is
proposed the analysis of the organization of Phonological Phrases when constituting English
imperative sentences as Intonational Phrases. As for the intonation characterization, it is
proposed to analyze the Fundamental Frequency values (F0) of the negative imperative
sentences under the Intonational Phonology theory, from Ladd (1996, 2008). The research
methodology included the collection of a corpus consisted of perception data of English
negative imperative sentences, obtained from 30 learners of English, between 18-30 years old,
from Pelotas/RS and its region, and from three proficiency levels of English: Basic,
Intermediate and Advanced. To certify the participants’ level, all of them took the Oxford
Placement Test (Allan, 2004). Perception data were collected through a “judgment test”, in
which stimulus were recorded by a native English speaker. The results were statistically
analyzed in the SPSS software version 17.0, and the stimuli were subjected to acoustic
analysis with the aid of the Praat software. The results showed great difficulty of English
learners in identifying the meanings conveyed by negative imperative sentences, especially
those of basic level, considering the prosodic level of the language, which was explained by
the intonation of each type of sentence in accordance with the principles of Phonology
Intonational as well as the organization of Phonological Phrases that make up the Intonation
Phrase, in line with the precepts of Prosodic Theory.
aprendizes, todos os participantes do estudo realizaram o Oxford Placement Test (ALLAN,
