Undersökningen fokuserar på hur lärare påverkar elevers motivation. Vi har fördjupat oss i hur medvetna de intervjuade lärarna är när det gäller vikten av att motivera eleverna. Vi vill även ta reda på hur de intervjuade lärarna arbetar med att bygga upp motivation hos elever. Dessutom vill vi undersöka hur viktig roll lärare har när det gäller elevernas motivation.   Undersökningen baseras på semistrukturerade intervjuer. Sex stycken yrkesverksamma lärare på tre olika skolor intervjuades till denna studie. Informanterna är lärare på högstadiet respektive gymnasiet på skolor som är belägna på en mellanstor ort i Sverige.   Resultatet visar att informanterna är medvetna om hur viktig roll motivationen spelar för inlärning och utveckling hos elever. Våra slutsatser är att relationer, variation, inspiration och individualisering spelar en stor roll för att få elever motiverade. Alla informanter var eniga om att när undervisningen anpassas efter elevernas intressen och de tycker att det är roligt föds motivationen.

The mechanisms of airway narrowing in asthma

In healthy subjects Deep Inspiration (DI) transiently dilates the airways, while many asthmatics show bronchoconstriction by a mechanism which is incompletely understood.I investigated how the method of assessment affects the response. The response as measured by specific airway conductance (SGaw) appeared to contradict that measured by forced expiration. This led to the formulation of a novel hypothesis to explain the asthmatic bronchoconstrictor response: That the negative intra-thoracic pressure associated with DI may temporarily increase airway oedema and thus reduce lumenal diameter. This was tested by comparing the effects of non-forced with forced inspiration (through resistance). In the asthmatic group, forced inspiration produced significantly more bronchoconstriction. Airway hyperresponsivenessin asthma has been attributed to impaired ability of DI to stretch airway smooth muscle. The seminal study `confirming' this, I argue, is flawed. I have re-tested the hypothesis. The asthmatic response was significantly greater than the control response even when DI was prohibited. Asthmatic hyperresponsivenessis therefore not attributable entirely to an abnormal asthmatic response to DI. Many asthmatics display an apparent capacity for unlimited airway narrowing in response to bronchial challenge; most healthy subjects demonstrate a maximal (limited) response. The maximal response measured by a DI independent index represented a greater % change from baseline than the maximal established by a DI dependent index. This suggested some bronchoprotection resulting from DI but also the existence of a distinct mechanism which ultimately limited narrowing. I reasoned that the capacity for unlimited airway narrowing is most likely a function of smaller airways. I investigated indices of small airway function and found they predicted the ultimate response much earlier in challenge than FEV 1, suggesting a possible practical test of the capacity for unlimited narrowing. I postulate that the clearly established but limited relationship between the responses to DI and bronchial challenge may reflect the dependence of the response to DI on the degree of inflammation within the airway wall whereas the response to challenge may be determined by its overall thickness.

Hidden city: Here is nowhere, here is everywhere

The act of writing and reading fiction is a search for its center, its hidden meaning. In writing, the author constructs every element, rendering trees, buildings, and people with the knowledge that the final landscape is more than the sum of its parts. The reader engages with these details, mundane or extraordinary, in pursuit of the fiction’s center, its hidden meaning. The tension between the described and the center is what makes reading fiction compelling. The thesis describes a fictional underground city through narrative. Like all fictions, the thesis is based on both the fantastic and the author’s own experiences. The reader is not told everything about the city. Much of it remains (both figuratively and literally) in the dark. It is in the gaps, the narrative leaps that the reader is intended to fill with his or her own experiences and imaginings. In this way, the thesis seeks to evoke both the fantastic and the personal. For each reader a different reaction - for each reader a different center. The underground city is harsh urban condition; intended to provoke. Its dystopian framework is inspired by the works of architects Antonio Sant’Elia, Utskin + Broensky, and Superstudio, among others. Through drawings and narrative, these architects challenged the architectural zeitgeist of their time. Their work continues to provide a basis for reflection by providing an alternative reality, a new frame of reference. Through the fantastic, the unbuilt, it is possible to come to a better understanding of our own architectural experiences. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu
