A presente dissertação tem por objetivo estudar o patrimônio arquitetônico do Instituto Butantan, localizado na cidade de São Paulo. Esse Instituto, fundado em 1901 para produção de imunobiológicos, e que se notabilizou mundialmente pela pesquisa em ofidismo, instalou-se em um campus de pesquisa no qual cientistas e arquitetos criaram, durante o último século, um conjunto de elementos arquitetônicos, urbanísticos e paisagísticos relevantes do ponto de vista não só científico, mas também histórico e patrimonial, dentro do contexto recente de valorização do patrimônio arquitetônico da saúde. Mais especificamente, pretende-se analisar também como tem se dado a preservação deste importante acervo arquitetônico, já reconhecido e tombado pelo órgão estadual (Condephaat) e municipal (Conpresp) de proteção do patrimônio cultural. A partir de levantamentos da história, do espaço construído e das normativas dessa instituição, analisou-se em que medida as ações reservacionistas que incidiram sobre esse patrimônio seguiram as recomendações da Carta de Veneza (1964), documento internacional em vigor que estabelece os princípios básicos que devem fundamentar quaisquer intervenções no patrimônio cultural, e da Teoria da Restauração, de Cesare Brandi (1963), um dos textos-base nesse campo. Para tanto, foram consultadas principalmente fontes primárias do acervo documental e iconográfico do Instituto, fontes secundárias pertinentes e depoimentos de frequentadores desse campus. / This research intends to study the architectural heritage of the Instituto Butantan, in the city of São Paulo. This institute, founded in 1901 for the production of immunobiologicals, has garnered world-recognition for its research on ophidism and is located in a research campus where scientists and architects created a set of architectonic, urban and landscape elements during the last century. This set is relevant not only for its scientific importance, but also due to its historical and heritage significance, given the recent context of valuation of healthcare architecture. Furthermore, this research analyses how this architectural heritage has been preserved, since it has already been recognized and listed by the state and municipal departments of protection of cultural heritage. Based on surveys on the institution\'s history, its built space and its regulations, it was analyzed the extent to which actions toward such heritage have followed the recommendations from the Venice Charter (1964), an international document that establishes the basic principles to support interventions on cultural heritage, and the Theory of Restoration, by Cesare Brandi (1963), a reference text in this field. For such, primary sources from the Institute\'s document and image collection were consulted, as well as pertinent secondary sources, and statements from users of the campus.

A história do Instituto Butantan, como a de qualquer outra instituição, traz ao longo do tempo mudanças e rupturas do modelo político implantado, conforme diretrizes da diretoria, contexto social e histórico e por fatores outros. Uma representação cinematográfica das atividades exercidas pela instituição não evidencia tais modificações, até mesmo porque a função de um filme de divulgação é mostrar sempre o que se julga pertinente, buscando legitimação e adesão à organização. Isso pode criar e, inclusive, reforçar mitos e memórias, tanto para o público externo, quanto para uma tomada de posição por parte dos funcionários. O estudo que aqui se apresenta, tem por objetivo analisar filmes cuja temática seja o Instituto Butantan, quer ele seja o tema central ou parte da narrativa. Selecionamos filmes institucionais de divulgação científica e também documentários sobre a cidade de São Paulo, em que a imagem do instituto se fazia presente. Partimos do arquivo permanente da própria instituição e de acervos externos a ela. O recorte histórico privilegia os anos de 1928-1953, que constituem as diretorias de Afrânio do Amaral e de Eduardo Vaz, comparando-as com os paradigmas deixados por Vital Brazil, primeiro e mais conhecido diretor do local. Verificamos uma representação da instituição, cuja idéia de modernidade, seja da ciência ou da cidade, tinha um claro contraponto com o mundo rural, tido como sinônimo de atraso em São Paulo à época e esse embate acaba chegando aos filmes realizados. / The history of Instituto Butantan, like the history of any other institution, brings changes over time and disruptions of the political model implemented, as directives of the board, social and historical context and other factors. A cinematographic representation of the activities performed by the institution does not show such changes, even so because the function of a divulgation film is always to show what is thought appropriate, seeking legitimacy and adherence to the organization. This can create and even reinforce myths and memories, both for external audiences, as for positions taken by the employees. The study presented here has the objective of analyzing films whose theme is the Instituto Butantan, being it the central theme or part of the narrative. We selected institutional films of scientific divulgation and also documentaries about the city of São Paulo, where the image of the institute was present. We searched the films of the institutions permanent archive and external collections. Our historical focuses were the years 1928-1953, which represents the boards of Afrânio do Amaral and Eduardo Vaz, comparing them with the paradigms left by Vital Brazil, the first and best known director of the institution. We verify a representation of the institution, whose idea of modernity, whether in science or in the city, had a clear counterpoint in the rural economy, that was a synonym of backwardness in São Paulo at the time, and this struggle eventually comes to movies made.
